As our Stewardship Campaign begins, we need to contemplate how Jesus has blessed our lives each and every day we are on this earth. We are called to share our time, talent and treasures. We can show our gratitude for these earthly gifts by returning a portion of these gifts back to God for his use here on earth. Your 2014 packet, which includes a cover letter, the 2015 Challenge Budget and a pledge card, will be available for pickup at the church beginning September 28. During the next month, please prayerfully consider what your gift to Christ should be. Stewardship Dedication Sunday will be November 2 when you are asked to turn in your pledge card. If you are unable to attend our combined worship service that day, you may place your pledge card in the offering plate on any Sunday in October. We will celebrate Dedication Sunday by having a Celebration Brunch following our combined worship service. Please make it a priority in your life to attend the worship service and celebration brunch on November 2. First Presbyterian! Planted with seeds of faith, and nurtured with the labor of love, our musical activities are flourishing at First Presbyterian Kingsport! Just look at what’s blossoming: ◊ Agnese Goin is a magical magnet for our little ones – the Alleluia Choir is bursting with involvement and enthusiasm. They will be filling our services with the joy of the Kingdom that “belongs to such as these”. ◊ The Chancel Choir is growing stronger in vocal resonance and richness of Spirit in their service of worship and praise. This has been all the more invigorated by the participation of our newest sopranos – Maggie Collins and Beth Compton. ◊ The Westminster Bells are loving our work together more than ever, and growing in our skills. In addition, we’ve added a Chamber Bell ensemble, giving us more opportunities to play, and more flexibility in scheduling. ◊ We welcome The East Tennessee Cello Choirs (including our own Emily Smith) from the Studio of Georgia Sinko Cox into our musical family! This marvelous group of young musicians rehearses at our church weekly, and will play in our services on a monthly basis. What a blessing! ◊ We are the Kingsport home of The Paramount Chamber Players -- the Mountain Empire’s premiere professional chamber ensemble – celebrating its Tenth Anniversary Season with a concert in our sanctuary Friday, October 24, 7:30. Mark Davis is excited to sing a medley of great Musical Theater songs with the entire ensemble. (Please see Insert). ◊ Our Chancel Choir is preparing to perform Handel’s Messiah with the combined Church Circle Choirs and orchestra on Sunday, December 14 at 4 and 7 pm. At First Broad Street UM Church. Come celebrate the joy of Christ’s birth! (Please see Insert). Come to Church Night Supper, watch the annual parade of costumes, and decorate your trunk to pass out candy! This is always a fun event for everyone involved. If you haven’t come before, please feel encouraged to try something new. All you have to do is bring a few bags of candy, decorate your trunk as little or as much as you want, and enjoy passing out candy at this safe event before Halloween. Parents: your child can come to supper dressed up or get dressed here. They will hear a short story from Agnese and then be a part of our parade of costumes before Trunk or Treating in the parking lot. Bring a bag for the candy! If you have any questions, please email or call me at the church. Thanks, Russ Business Administrator We welcome Annie Jones as our new Business Administrator. She began on September 2, and she will work alongside Roseanne during the fall in preparation for Roseanne’s retirement in late December. We are excited to have Annie, and we are delighted she can work alongside current staff members toward what we believe will be a smooth transition. Her hours are from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Please introduce yourselves to Annie and do all you can to assist her and to welcome her to our First Pres family. Meet Annie Jones My name is Annie Jones. I am a Kingsport native and a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts degree at Tennessee Wesleyan College. I have a background in the mental health and mental retardation fields as well as in office management. I’m excited to be at First Pres and look forward to working with you as your business administrator. Annie The Outreach Committee is reaching out to the community around us and inviting them to Trunk or Treat with us on October 29. Since we will be handing out LOTS of candy and no one wants to turn any adorable ballerinas or superheroes away, lets all pitch in and make sure we don't run out. Please pick up a bag or two of Halloween candy next time you run to the store and drop it off in the Halloween bag in the Narthex. We will make sure all trunks have LOTS of candy. Peacemaking Offering The Peacemaking Offering (now called Peace and Global Witness) will be received October 5. When you give, you help promote the peace of Christ across the world, in places like Korea, Sudan, Columbia. Twenty-five percent of this offering will be used locally and the Outreach Committee chose Hay House to receive this gift. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God." September 2, 2014 To all the ladies of the morning and evening circles and others, too: You are all very thoughtful to send me lovely flowers—the roses recently, as well as the Christmas potted poinsettia. They are most welcome and enjoyed. Thank you! Anne Hafele Dear First Presbyterian Church Family, Thank you so much for the church flowers I got on Sunday, July 13th, my birthday. Also, for the cards, calls, flowers, and especially the much needed prayers for my complicated back surgery (due in part to a successful 30 year kidney transplant.). This added issues only a transplant center can handle. I am recovering at home after my surgery at Mayo in June. I ask for continued prayer. Thank you, come visit or call anytime as this will be a long recovery period. God Bless, Kay McBee We would like to express our appreciation for the beautiful Celebration of Life memorial and reception for Carl Cole. His love for church and church family was abundant. Thank you so much for continuing to show your love for Carl even in his death. We will never forget this act of love and kindness. May God’s love and peace be with you! Margaret K. Cole and Family Border Mission "When a foreigner lives with you in your land, don't take advantage of him. Treat the foreigner the same as a native. Love him like one of your own." Lev. 19:33-34 "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me" Mark 9:37 As you hear about the children coming across the border, do you wonder what you can do and where you can give to help? Our own Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Committee is answering your questions. They are aiding these children by working with the border churches and other relief organizations. They are asking for your prayers and donations. We all can pray. Some may give. Your church has sent a donation to PDA to aid them in their work. You may individually send money by mailing a check to Presbyterian Church USA, PO Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700, marked for PDA for unaccompanied children and border crisis, by credit card by calling 1-800-8723283, or by computer at pcusa.org/pda and following prompts. God loves these children and so should you. Are You a Geek? Are you pretty tech-savvy? Or maybe reasonably techsavvy? Can you: Upload your photos from your phone? Keep your computer virus-free? Transfer files from one computer to another? Attach a photo or document to an email? Set up a printer? From time to time we hear about folks in the church who need a bit of computer help – anything from help with purchasing a new one to getting rid of viruses to managing photos to learning to email pictures to grandchildren. Can you help out? You can’t imagine the help this would be to our folks, and it’s a great way to spend some time with some great people. If you can lend your computer-know-how from time to time, email Sharon at samstutz@firstpreskingsport.org Building Our Legacy Don’t forget that the campaign to BUILD OUR LEGACY is ongoing. Many people are choosing to contribute without making a pledge which is certainly acceptable. We have made a good start on replacing the legacy funds that we used for the major work on the roofs, but we need to continue to make progress on this objective. If you choose to simply make contributions to BOL, you may use the blue envelopes from the pew racks or otherwise direct the amount to BOL. Reaching out to the Cora Cox Academy The Cora Cox Academy (Cora Cox was a member of First Presbyterian Church) has reached out to us and asked if we would partner with them in caring for their students and supporting various activities at the school. Many of their students come to school in the morning hungry. If we could provide packages of granola bars, Pop Tarts, crackers, or other items to carry them through the morning, that would be a real help to them. Breakfast items can be dropped off in the foyer on Sunday mornings (look for the table) or in the church office. Thank you! Communicating Congregational Concerns We need your help. We are trying to work out a better way to care for people in the congregation who have had an illness, accident, or other event in their lives, and need our prayers and support. Too often we don’t learn about a concern or need for weeks, or we miss it altogether. Children’s Sermon ~ Sunday, September 14 11:00 a.m. Service of Worship Men’s Retreat The 2014 Men's Retreat will be held Friday evening through Sunday morning, October 17-19 in Banner Elk, North Carolina at the Presbyterian Family Camp. (Please see insert.) For Sale Four cemetery plots were donated to the church. Session has approved the sale of these plots, and the proceeds received will be used to fund the Building our Legacy campaign to replenish the funds used to pay for the new roofs. These plots will be sold in pairs. The cost is $2,000 per pair. The plots are located at Oak Hill Cemetery in the Last Supper section. If you are interested, please call Don Thompson or Roseann Wells. Here’s how you can help: Keep tabs on the folks you worship with and go to Sunday School with. If someone who normally sits by you is missing for a couple of weeks, let us know. Or better yet, give them a call yourself and let them know you’ve been concerned. Hopefully they have just been traveling, but we want to be sure. Keep us posted. If you have a baby or an accident or a troubling diagnosis, please let us know. We want to be able to care for you and pray for you and bring you a hot casserole, but we need to know. And for our part, we are working at communicating pastoral care concerns with the congregation more effectively. Unless we are asked to keep matters private, we will share the concern and needs with your deacon, Sunday School leader, or others as appropriate (Clothes Closet friends, Knitters…). We will also communicate deaths and funeral service arrangements with the congregation in a timely manner. Thank you for your help in tending our flock. The Centennial Celebration Committee invites you to attend the “Remembering and Rejoicing” program on the Rev. Davis Thomas Wednesday, November 19, 2014 Dinner 5:15 p.m. Cost $8 Program 6:15 p.m. Thank you: The Centennial Celebration Committee would like to thank Rev. and Mrs. (Virginia) Davis Thomas and Mark Thomas for their assistance in planning the November "Remembering and Rejoicing" program. We would also like to thank: The Cookbook Committee: Betsy Boyd, Chairman; DeLois Anderson; Pat Brose; Carolyn Doerfert; Judy Grover; Jane Harris; Susan Jackson; Bette Patton; Betty Travis; and Vaughan Valentine France Dryden and Stewart Baggett `xÅÉÜ|xá …warm memories bring such comfort to all of us - and can you imagine the joy you will bring to Virginia and Davis Thomas when they have the occasion to read a story, paragraph or even a sentence or two that you have written about their ministry at First Presbyterian in Kingsport? The Remembering and Rejoicing program honoring Davis Thomas is Wednesday evening, November 19. Although in good health, Virginia and Davis will be unable to join us for the program. So in keeping with our theme, Remembering and Rejoicing, we will be sending them a package of treasured memories which you have remembered and recorded. You can place your memories in the Memory Box in the church foyer, mail to the church marked “Thomas Memory” or call Jenny Clemmer (288-7615) for pick-up at your front door. Thank you for your contribution to our Centennial Celebration.
