IT’S A “GUESS-WHO” GAME

“In America, we’ve got cowboys. As
an actor, you don’t reinvent something
like the Western. You make it your
own: “If I were in this situation, what
would I do as a cattleman?” Suddenly
your fingerprints are all over the
place.”
“People come up and think it’s the first
time anyone’s ever said, “Hey I love
the smell of napalm in the morning.”
You just have to smile and appreciate
their support. Wherever I am in the
world, I never get tired of someone
reaching out like that.”

LEARN TO PLAY MAH JONGG
Recently members have expressed an interest in learning to play
Mah Jongg. If you are interested, Mary Maloney has extended an
invitation to join her and the Mah Jongg group on Wednesdays at
12:30pm. This is not an official Mah Jongg lesson, but an
opportunity to learn the game as you play it. Mah Jongg is typically
played in the first section of the Yellowstone Room, which is
directly off of the lobby.
What is Mah Jongg?
“Mahjong, also spelled majiang, mah jongg, and numerous other
variants, is a game that originated in China. It is commonly played by
four players (with some three-player variations found in
South Korea and Japan). The game and its regional variants are
widely played throughout Eastern and South Eastern Asia and have a
small following in Western countries. Similar to the Western card
game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation
and involves a degree of chance.
The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols, although some regional variations use a different
number of tiles. In most variations, each player begins by receiving
13 tiles. In turn players draw and discard tiles until they complete a
legal hand using the 14th drawn tile to form four groups (melds) and
a pair (head). There are fairly standard rules about how a piece is
drawn, stolen from another player and thus melded, the use of simples (numbered tiles) and honours (winds and dragons), the kinds of
melds, and the order of dealing and play. However there are many
regional variations in the rules; in addition, the scoring system and
the minimum hand necessary to win varies significantly based on the
local rules being used.” (SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA)

Thank You for Westview School Back-to-School Supply Donations
Thank you to members of the Senior Center for their contributions to the Back-to-School Supply Project for
Westview Elementary School . You donated over 985 items AND $195.00 to purchase additional supplies to
bring the grand total to 1395 individual items.
All school supplies were delivered on Monday, August 25 to Westview Elementary School. Patsy Ryan, School
social worker, accepted the supplies on behalf of the students of Westview Elementary. Patsy Ryan determines which children and families receive supplies. These students, through your generosity, are now supplied
and ready to learn. Your donations really do make a big difference in getting the school year off to a good
start for the students who receive these items. THANK YOU!
Veteran’s Day Program – Speakers Needed
The Education and Service Committee (ES) is planning a Monday, November 10, Veteran’s Day program at
the Senior Center. This program will begin at 1:00. We would like to have one or two more veterans, joining
Jim Paskett, Korean War navy vet, to talk about their military experiences. These speakers would have about
10 or so minutes for their presentation. Veterans and/or their significant other may bring memorabilia to
display on tables in the lobby area.
If you or someone you know would like to be part of the program please let Peggy, Sharon or Bill know. Persons interested in being a part of this program will be contacted.
Please reserve the time and date for this program. Look for additional information in the November Gazette.

It's time for our annual "Metro Dining Club" box sale. This is the largest income producing
activity for the Apple Valley Seniors. These boxes contain approximately 160 cards representing
restaurants and other businesses in our area. The sale runs through November 7 or until all
boxes are sold (which ever comes first). Each card has 12 months of the year printed on them,
so you can go back each month to your favorite location. The Apple Valley Seniors need
volunteers to sign up to help sell the MDC cards. In the coffee area, you will be able to find
the white three ring binder that says - “MDC Sales Signup.” Sales are Monday - Friday at the
center, in two shifts each day. The morning shift is 9:00am-12:30pm and the afternoon shift is
12:30-4:00pm. Instructions on how to handle your shift is in the front of the sales book.
Questions: Sandy Nelson (952-432-8310) or Pam Subject (952-431-6922).

"FMSC states that FOOD is the foundation for life! Our food not
only physically changes a person, but it emotionally and spiritually
changes their entire world"
Because of the food's ability to transform the health of its
recipients, FMSC leaders agreed "Manna Packs" was a great fit as
a name. The "Manna Pack" rice meal is the name for the packets
of food it ships to over 70 countries around the globe. These
rice meal packs were developed collaboratively by Cargill,
Pillsbury, & General Mills food scientists. It is composed of Rice, Textured Soy Protein, Dehydrated
Vegetables, and 20 Vitamins & minerals. Each meal costs 22-cents to make. The food packs are assembled solely by volunteers.
The goal is to pack one million "Manna Packs" this year!
The Apple Valley Seniors have been assembling these packs for about three years. We have had about 20 to
25 people sign up every month for quite a while, but we need MORE VOLUNTEERS! If we had about 10
more people to come and assist us every month we would be on track to reach our goal of 35 people each
and every month! Please sign up in the coffee area and come with us and join us every month.
We meet at the Senior Center the third Thursday each month at 11:30 AM to
share rides. The next session is October 16th. Will we see you there?
