WASHINGTON vs. #14/14 ARIZONA STATE
Dawgs Take On Sun Devils In Lone October Home Game
The Game: The Washington football team (5-2 overall, 1-2 Pac-12) returns to Seattle for a Homecoming game vs. Arizona State (5-1, 3-1 Pac-12) in the Dawgs’ lone October home game of the season. The
night-time kickoff is set for 7:45 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN. Washington returns home after two
road games and a bye week since completing a four-game, September home stretch while the Sun Devils,
ranked No. 14 in both major polls, come to Montlake after back-to-back wins over ranked opponents
(USC and Stanford) the last two weeks. ASU will be making just its fourth visit to Husky Stadium since
the start of the new century (the UW has played seven times in Tempe since 1999). Following the ASU
game, the Dawgs return to the road for a Nov. 1 game at Colorado.
QUICK SLANTS: Washington ranks third in the nation with 27 sacks ... senior Hau’oli Kikaha, with twoand-a-half more sacks vs. Oregon, now has 12.5 on the season ... Kikaha leads the nation in both sacks
and tackles for loss (15.5) ... linemate Danny Shelton is fourth in both sacks (7.5) and in tackles for loss
(12.0) ... with 15 takeaways and just three turnovers, the Huskies’ turnover margin of plus-12 is secondbest in the nation (Georgia’s plus-13 leads the nation) ... the Huskies’ three turnovers are tied for the FBS
lead with Oregon ... UW opponents have just eight punt returns yards on six returns, a 1.33-yard average,
fourth-best in the nation ... with a blocked field goal at Cal, the Huskies lost their 100-percent record in
the red zone this season ... at 24-for-25 (.960), the Dawgs now rank fourth (tied) in red-zone offense ...
kicker Cameron Van Winkle is 9-for-10, with his .900 percentage good for No. 9 in the nation ... Huskies
Shaq Thompson and Andrew Hudson are tied for fifth in the nation in forced fumbles (3 in 7 games) while
Thompson and Shelton are tied for second in fumble recoveries (also 3 in 7) ... Thompson has scored
four defensive touchdowns this season (plus another on offense) ... Thompson’s 100-yard fumble return
at Cal is one of just four 100-yard plays in UW history ... Washington has had eight true freshmen play
this year: DB Budda Baker, DL Will Dissly, DB Darren Gardenhire, DB Naijiel Hale, DB Sidney Jones, WR
Brayden Lenius, WR Dante Pettis and PK Tristan Vizcaino ... Baker, Jones and Hale (all defensive backs)
and Lenius have all started ... vs. Hawai’i, John Ross caught a 91-yard TD pass from Jeff Lindquist, the
second-longest pass play in Husky history (Jake Locker to Marcel Reece, 98 yards, 2007, is the record).
Television: The Washington-ASU game will air live to a national audience on the ESPN with Mark
Jones (play-by-play), Rod Gilmore (color) and Jessica Mendoza (sidelines) providing the commentary. The
Pac-12 Networks will also show 60-minute replays next week.
Radio: The Washington IMG College Network, with its flagship station KOMO AM-1000 and FM-97.7,
will carry the live broadcast of every football game on 18 Northwest radio stations. Longtime play-by-play
man Bob Rondeau and color analyst Damon Huard are joined by sideline reporter Elise Woodward. The
UW broadcast of the game will also air on Sirius (93) and XM (198) satellite radio.

PETERSEN TOPS LIST: The 2014 NCAA record book lists the top active
FBS coaches in terms of winning percentage (minimum five years at FBS)
and the Huskies’ own Chris Petersen tops this list. Peteren’s .885 career
winning percentage entering the season was No. 3 in the country for all
NCAA levels behind only Lance Leipold of Wisconsin-Whitewater (.940)

COACHING STAFF: With a new head coach on board for 2014, the Husky
coaching staff obviously includes mostly new faces. In fact, of the nine
full-time coaches on the 2014 staff, six worked for Chris Petersen last
year at Boise State. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Petersen’s staff in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including the
last four as coordinator. Kwiakowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive lineman, also worked at his alma mater from 1988 to 1996. Associate head
coach and offensive line coach Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13
season coaching in Boise (he coached at Colorado in 2006), meaning he
was with Petersen seven of eight seasons. Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also on Petersen’s Broncos staff
during Petersen’s entire eight seasons, though he started as director of
operations. He’s coached running backs the last five years at BSU. Assistant head coach and linebackers coach Bob Gregory comes to Washington
having spent the last four seasons at Boise State. He was the defensive
coordinator at California from 2002 to 2009 and, along with also having
coached at Boise State in 2001, has also worked in the conference at
Oregon. Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith, who turned in
several top-class performances vs. the Huskies during his playing days,
was quarterbacks coach at Boise State the last two seasons. Previously
an offensive coordinator at Montana, he takes that role (along with QBs)
at Washington. Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004
season in the same position at Washington under head coach Keith Gilbertson, was Petersen’s DBs coach in Boise the last two years, having
spent five seasons in the NFL before that. Wide receivers coach Brent
Pease worked at BSU under Petersen for his first six seasons as head
coach. The former standout quarterback at Montana, Pease returned to
the Northwest after having coached at Florida the last two seasons. Defensive line coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Choate has a similar recent history as he worked under Petersen from 2006 through 2011
before going to Washington State in 2012 and Florida in 2013. Among the
nine full-time assistants, the only returner from the 2013 season is tight
ends coach Jordan Paopao, who served in that same role in 2013 after
having worked as a UW grad assistant in 2011 and 2012, when he was
also in charge of tight ends. The UW staff for four grad assistants in 2014
includes one returner and three newcomers. The returner is former UW
and NFL wideout D’Andre Goodwin, who’s back for his second year. He’s
joined by Ben Thienes, Joshua Taufalele and Gerald Alexander. Thienes
was a GA at Boise State last season while Alexander was a standout DB
at Boise State before playing in the NFL for five years. Taufalele is new
to both UW and Petersen. The former offensive lineman at New Mexico
most recently coached at Foothill College in California.
Huskies vs. Devils History: Arizona State has taken the lead in the
all-time series vs. Washington at 16-15 by winning the last eight in a row
over the Huskies, who first met the Devils in 1975. That ‘75 game marked
the only time that the two teams ever played one another prior to the Sun
Devils joining the Pac-10 Conference before the 1978 season. Since then,
the two have played one another every year between 1978 and now except
for 1983 and 1984, 2003 and 2004, and 2011 and 2012. The Huskies lost
that first-ever meeting at Tempe in 1975, 35-12, but routed the 12th-ranked
Devils in the next matchup, winning 41-7 at Husky Stadium in 1978. One of
the two teams (or both) has been ranked in 14 of the last 18 meetings, the
only exceptions the 1999 game when the Devils came to Husky Stadium
and beat Washington, 28-7, and the 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 games, all
ASU wins. Some of the Huskies’ most memorable games in modern history
have come vs. ASU. In the 1995 season-opener, tailback Rashaan Shehee
hit receiver Fred Coleman with a 30-yard TD pass late in the fourth quarter
to give Washington a 23-20 win. The following year at Tempe, Washington
trailed 42-21 before backup QB Brock Huard came on to lead the Huskies to
three fourth-quarter TDs, but Robert Nycz kicked a 38-yard field goal with
0:02 left to win, 45-42. In 1998 at Sun Devil Stadium, the Huskies pulled
off the “Miracle in the Desert” as Huard hit tight end Reggie Davis with a
63-yard pass on fourth-and-17 with 0:28 left in the game to pull out a 42-38
Washington win. In 2001, the Huskies capped a seven-minute, 12-second
drive with a 30-yard field goal with no time remaining to edge the Devils,
33-31. In 2005 in Tempe, ASU QB Rudy Carpenter passed for 401 yards
and three TDs as the Devils pulled away in the second half of a 44-20 win.
The 2006 game was another tight contest as the Devils pulled out a 26-23
overtime win at Husky Stadium. The UW trailed 20-6 before receiver Sonny

Shackelford threw a TD pass to Anthony Russo and then caught a touchdown
from backup QB Johnny DuRocher to send the game into OT. After a UW
field goal, Rudy Carpenter hit Brent Miller with a 25-yard TD pass for the
win. In 2007, 14th-ranked ASU came back from a halftime deficit to win,
44-20. In 2008, the Devils led 16-13 at half, but pulled away for a 39-19
victory. Carpenter threw for 218 yards and two TDs while Keegan Herring
rushed for 144 yards and one score. Last season was another tight contest
as Danny Sullivan hit Chris McGaha with a 50-yard pass with five secons
left to beat the Huskies, 24-17. The most recent UW-ASU game in Seattle,
in 2010, the Devils beat the Dawgs, 24-14, despite 110 rushing yards from
Chris Polk and 209 passing from Jake Locker. After a two-year hiatus, the
Devils continued their streak with a 53-24 victory in Tempe last year. ASU
out-rushed the Huskies, 314 yards to minus-5, thanks to 158 yards from
Marion Grice and seven sacks.
CAPTAINS: Washington will utilize game-by-game captains this season.
Here is the game-by-game list:
Hawai’i: Micah Hatchie, Hau’oli Kikaha, Jaydon Mickens, Danny Shelton
EWU: DiAndre Campbell, Brian Clay, Andrew Hudson, Colin Tanigawa
Illinois: Dexter Charles, Evan Hudson, Cyler Miles, Shaq Thompson
GSU: Jesse Callier, John Timu, Cameron Van Winkle, Kasen Williams
Stanford: Deontae Cooper, Hau’oli Kikaha, Danny Shelton, Colin Tanigawa
Cal: DiAndre Campbell, Korey Durkee, Travis Feeney, Shaq Thompson
Oregon: James Atoe, Keishawn Bierria, Andrew Hudson, Jaydon Mickens
THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 192-603 (.758) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies
are 1-0 in such games this season (EWU).
Washington-Arizona State Ties: Washington and Arizona State’s
coaching staffs have very little crossover. In fact, the only two coaches
who have contact with each other are ASU assistant DelVaughn Alexander
and Husky tight ends coach Jordan Paopao. Alexander was on the staff
at the University of San Diego when Paopao was a player for the Toreros.
As far as players go, Arizona State’s roster includes just one player from
Washington: Jordan Simone (Sammamish/Skyline), who began his college
career at Washington State. Simone attended Skyline with current Husky
Kasen Williams. Washington’s roster includes three players from Arizona:
Ryan Masel (Phoenix/Desert Vista), Taelon Parson (Gilbert/Perry) and Kendyl
Taylor (Chandler/Hamilton). Masel went to high school with ASU’s Marcus
Washington while Taylor went to Hamilton with Sun Devils Jaxon Hood
and Christian Westerman. Parson and ASU’s Mo Latu both went to Perry.
Other HS teammates: UW’s Joe Mathis and ASU’s James Johnson (Upland);
UW’s Jaydon Mickens and Marvin Hall and ASU’s Jayme Otomewo (Dorsey);
UW’s Gavin McDaniel and ASU’s Cameron Smith (Coppell);
HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go
hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards
in a game 91 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 76-14-1 (.841) in those
contests. Since 1995, UW is 51-11-1 (.817) when rushing for 200 yards.
DEVILS AT HUSKY STADIUM, A RARE SIGHT: Due to a variety of
quirks in Pac-10 scheduling, as well as the expansion of the conference
to 12 teams (an the resulting creation of divisions), Washington and Arizona State have not met in Seattle very frequently. In fact, dating back
to 1999, the Huskies and Sun Devils have played in Husky Stadium just
three times. Washington and ASU didn’t play in 2003 and 2004, and again
in 2011 and 2012. In the meantime, they played seven games in Tempe
(2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2013), a stretch that included a
very unsual run of three straight at Sun Devil Stadium. ASU has won four
straight Husky Stadium, a streak that dates back to 1999. The last time
Washington beat ASU in Seattle was 1997.
HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011,
marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that
have now been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field with a
38-6 win over then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. The 2014 season
marks the 94th season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on
the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in
the new campus facility. UW’s all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at
366-171-21 (.675).
HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major
renovation over from Nov., 2011, through Aug., 2013, as the entire lower
bowl and south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility features a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight
room, training room, locker room, meeting rooms, coaches’ offices) in the
west end, much more premium seating options and a new playing surface.
Husky Stadium had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once
far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. For much more information, including a virtual look from every seat
in the new stadium, photo galleries, live construction cams, and more, go
to huskystadium.com.
THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added
Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along
with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference
since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other
three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus
four of six teams in the other division each season. The first two seasons,
the Huskies did not face UCLA or Arizona State. Last year and in 2013, the
Huskies don’t face Utah or USC.
