Church of Boulder Christ. Community. City. Welcome to All Souls Church of Boulder We are so glad to have you join us! We don’t know what church looks like for you, but here at All Souls, we’re pretty okay with the idea that we’re all a beautiful mess. We like old hymns and Bob Dylan. We climb fourteeners and drink really good beer. We believe in prayer and dance parties. We worship in flip-flops and cowboy boots. We know we make lots of mistakes, so we try to do lots of forgiving. We understand that a new church service can sometimes be intimidating, but we hope you feel warmly welcomed and that you find yourself able to participate however you choose, no matter your faith background. If you want to know more about All Souls or meet with someone from our Leadership Team, please fill out the Guest Information card on the back and drop it in the offering basket. 1 All Souls strives to be an intersection of three things: 2 Christ 4 We are regular people who are being transformed, day by day, by the good news and grace of Christ. We strive to create meaningful opportunities to worship the living God and to grow in our relationships with Him, not just on Sunday mornings, but as we go throughout our weeks. Our focus on the gospel continually reminds us of our deepest need for a Savior and the power of God’s redemptive love for us. Community 4 We believe that gospel transformation of our lives happens as we journey together in community. As a people who are in community with God, we desire to build community with each other through meaningful relationships. It is in messy community fueled by grace that we can best face life, sharing in each other’s joys and sorrows. We are a community who welcomes everyone; you do not have to believe as we do to belong, and we hope this is a safe place to ask questions, explore faith, and be authentic. City 4 We love our city. We believe that each of us has an opportunity, in our neighborhood and in our work, to be part of God’s redemptive work in the world. We desire to be a community that is sensitive and responsive to people and their spiritual, physical, emotional, intellectual, and relational needs. 1 Children at All Souls 2 We value children as an integral part of our community. If you have children, they are always welcome in our services, and we have Worship Activity Bags on each welcome table. A Cry Room is available in the back of the sanctuary, and we provide a Nursery downstairs for the entire service for little ones under the age of two. Children ages two through 4th grade worship with their parents during the first part of the service and are then dismissed to age-appropriate Children’s Worship classes during the Blessing of the Children. If your children are attending one of our classes for the first time, please accompany them to the chapel to register. WORSHIP October 19, 2014 g Ordinary Days Welcome Leader: All: Leader: All: Leader: All: O Lord, let my soul rise to meet you. As the day rises to meet the sun. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come. Amen. Reflection 1 Let us take a moment and prepare our hearts for worship 2 “Prayer . . . means yearning for the simple presence of God, for personal understanding of his word, for knowledge of his will and for capacity to hear and obey him. It is thus something much more than uttering petitions for good things external to our own deepest concerns. Our desire and our prayer should be summed up in St. Augustine’s words: “Noverim te, noverim me” (“May I know you, may I know myself!”).” - Thomas Merton, Contemplative Prayer “I never saw a discontented tree. They grip the ground as though they liked it, and though fast rooted they travel about as far as we do. They go wandering forth in all directions with every wind, going and coming like ourselves, traveling with us around the sun two million miles a day, and through space heaven knows how fast and far!” - John Muir “May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.” - Teresa of Ávila 3 Call to Worship 3 from Psalm 72 -Please stand- Leader: All: May the king rule with your justice and righteousness. May he defend the cause of the poor and give deliverance to the children of the needy. Leader: May He be like rain that falls on the mown grass, like showers that water the earth! In His days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound, till the moon be no more! All: Leader: All: May He have dominion from sea to sea and to the ends of the earth. Extend your reign, Lord Jesus! Bring your healing to us! Worship in Song All Creatures of Our God and King Prayer of Praise Worship in Song O the Deep Deep Love of Jesus 4 Prayer of Confession 3 from Luke 9 Leader: ”If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” All: Almighty and most merciful Father; we have erred, and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed our own devices and desires. We have broken your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done, and there is no spiritual health in us. 1 Silence for Self-examination and Personal Confession 2 Worship in Song Jesus, Lover of My Soul 5 Assurance of Pardon 3 from 1 Timothy 1:15 & 1 Peter 2:24 -Please stand- Leader: Hear the good news: This saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin, and alive to all that is good. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. All: Thanks be to God. If this is your first time, please meet teachers in the front of the sanctuary and accompany your child to the chapel to register. You can pick up your children after the sermon so we can pray for them during our time of communion. Leader: All: 6 Heavenly Father, you sent your own Son into this world. We thank you for the life of these children, entrusted to our care. Bless them and through the Gospel teach them to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ. And help us to remember that we are all your beloved children. Prayers of the People Leader: All: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in Heaven, hallowed is your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. All: And also with you. 7 Scripture Reading Leader: 3 Ephesians 3:14-21 -Please stand- Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church from the Book of Ephesians: For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 16 I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18 I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 14 Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. 20 Leader: All: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. -Please be seated- Sermon Ephesians: Life Within Rev. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. All: Leader: All: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
