But recently I have taken to reading biographies, and have found the stories of people’s lives more than fascinating…..they are a real insight into the past and present of people that I and many others would just take for granted. My latest book has been The Happiest Refugee, by Anh Do. What an incredible story about an remarkable man. The family escape from Vietnam, by boat, and the struggle to make it to Australia, along with settling into a new place and being accepted really is fascinating reading. There is one part where he gets a comedy “gig” at a RSL….and doesn’t realize that his audience are all Vietnam veterans. He describes this occasion as “the hardest gig that you could ever have in all your life.” But he won the crowd over by telling jokes about farms, football, Datsun cars, Housing Commission accommodation and bull terriers….all to prove that he was just an Aussie kid (he was only 3 when he arrived in Australia). He describes that gig as the greatest gift ever, because he has never encountered an audience even remotely that tough since. If he could make them laugh, he could handle anything. Yr 1/2 ICESKATING EXCURSION Last term, Mrs Woods class went iceskating . The Yr1/2 students were a bbit over-awed as we entered Mt.Thebarton Ice Arena for our skating session, due to an Ice Hockey Tournament being in progress—lots of noise and lots of teenage students!. We has the small rink to ourselves and everyone took up the challenge and after a very hesitant “first lap” the students found their skating feet and ”let go” of the outside rail. By the end of the hour session people were skating across the middle and showing their turning skills. Great fun for everyone. When we are faced with situations that cause us grief and panic, we can either back away and hope the situation disappears, or we can do what Anh did….face it head on and make the most of a difficult situation. We have a choice, no matter how old we are, student or parent, to either run, hide and make excuses, or face up to what is in front of us and do our best. Running away is the easy way out, and more often than not the same situation arises again. Anh Do’s dad had a saying…. “There are two times in life….there is now or there is too late”. Now is the best time to face those daunting situations, because tomorrow just may be too late. Worth a thought don’t you think?
