Remembering Our Friend William Korthof
Published in Adrian's Blog, Adrian's Blog #1
For the last several months we have been planning for the launch of this website. We were excited to share
Adrian’s adventures and exploits in running. More recently, we were on the hunt for compelling stories and
memorable blogs from past guides that might inspire other sighted individuals to guide visually impaired athletes.
On the eve of launching our site we received the most heartwrenching news. And so it is with great love and
sadness that here on the inaugural pages of our site we remember our dear friend William Korthof. Adrian first met
William in 2007 when he was looking for a guide for the running of the 21st Los Angeles Marathon.
William was killed Thursday, October 2, 2014 in a tragic motorcycle accident. He was 36-years and one day old
when he left us.

Nancyand Larry Dervin and am here to keep in contact with all of you wonderful trailrunners via e-mail, Facebook,

I am a young runner and believe that trail running is unmatched by any other running experience. Nature provides
the most beautiful running courses. Trail running is not easy, andtrail races really show what humans can do when
they allow themselves to begreat. I began running while in high school for the Reseda High School Cross Country
team. I was a benefactor of the New Basin Blues High School CrossCountry Shoe Program. I was introduced to trail
running while running withReseda and I have been in love with the trails since then.
I am excited to be a part of Trail Run Events and creating memorable race experiences. I'll keep you informed on

>> Backbone Trail group hikes take slow trek through Santa Monica Mountains
Hiking the Backbone Trail is the slowest and most gratifying 65 miles you’ll ever travel in Southern California. In a
region built for cars and speed, the Backbone Trail represents a return to the simple pleasures and challenges of
taking your time, putting one foot in front of the other, and seeing how far you can go.

Stretching through the Santa Monica Mountains from Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades almost to
the beach at Point Mugu State Park, the Backbone offers endless day hike options. But if you’ve ever wanted to trek
the entire trail, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area organizes an annual guided group hike starting in
January that covers the full Backbone in sections on eight alternating Saturdays. Space is limited and sign-ups
begin Wednesday . [Note: Article published Sept 26. These hikes are full]

>> Obama officially designates San Gabriel Mountains a national monument
President Obama on Friday officially set aside 346,000 acres of the San Gabriel Mountains as a national
monument, a move to link more communities east of Los Angeles with wild places in their own backyards.
"This is an issue of social justice, because it's not enough to have this awesome natural wonder within your sight
— you have to be able to access it," Obama said at a ceremony attended by more than 150 people at Frank G.
Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas.
"Right now, campgrounds are crowded, parking lots are tight, and there haven't been enough resources to manage
and maintain this area the way it deserves," he said. "So designating the San Gabriel Mountains as a national
monument is just the first step toward a broader effort to change that."
Agencies, nonprofits and local communities now must negotiate a management plan and funding strategies for the
San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, which officials expect to take three years to complete.
The monument, formed by re-designating about half of the Angeles National Forest, will be managed by the U.S.
Forest Service. It comes with no new government money, although advocates hope funds will come from public and
private donations and from adjusting the Forest Service budget.
The National Forest Foundation, a nonprofit funding arm of the Forest Service, said Friday it has established a $3million fund to speed high-priority restoration projects in the monument.

>> WATCH: Bill Murray Trains for the New York City Marathon
Lots of innovative training ideas to learn from here.
Bill Murray has conquered ghosts, aquatic and landscaping nemeses, and reliving the same day over and over, so
why not the marathon?
On Wednesday night's Late Show with David Letterman, Murray realized he was running out of time to train for the
New York City Marathon, which will be run on November 2.
Murray has some interesting training ideas and a wonderful way to refuel on the run.

'The safety and security of our runners, spectators, volunteers and staff is always our main priority.' says Chris

The NFL isn’t the only sporting institution keeping an eye on the Ebola virus.
On Wednesday , Chris Weiller, VP for New York Road Runners, organizers of the New York City Marathon, said it’s
also on their radar.
“We are carefully monitoring updates from the CDC and the NYC Department of Health and will continue to
coordinate closely with our health department partners at the city and state level to ensure the safety of participants,

>> Baltimore Marathon Specific About Suggested Cheers
Organizers of the Baltimore marathon are getting very specific about what words of encouragement spectators
should cheer on the sidelines.
A list including eight cheers are okay in their book, but some others are not. Those who plan on watching the 14th
Annual Baltimore Running Festival on Saturday are asked to use these words of encouragement:
- “Way to Run”
– “Awesome”
– “Looking Strong”
– “Looking Good”
– “Enjoy Baltimore”
– “You Can Do It”
– “You’re Flying”
– “Keep it Up”
Organizers ask that phrases like “Almost there” and “Not far to go,” are not yelled at runners unless you are near
the finish line is at M&T Bank Stadium.

>> Roberson CC runner breaks leg, finishes race
Roberson cross-country coach Andrew Devine knows what it's like at the end of a race as runners strain to get the
best times possible.
Some may fall near the finish line, totally exhausted, and then find the strength to get back up and cross the line.
Then there's Connor Callihan, a junior on the Rams' cross-country team.
Running in the Mountain Athletic Conference meet at Fletcher Community Park on Monday , Callihan took a tumble.
But it wasn't from exhaustion. Several feet from the finish, his right leg snapped like a twig, breaking in several
places.
"I've been doing this for a long time," Devine said. "I've never seen anything like this."
People started yelling for Callihan to finish, unaware what had happened. But he knew what he had to do.
"This was my last race of the year," Callihan said by phone from his bed in Mission Hospital on Tuesday . "I just
had to finish for my team. I just had to."
So, he crawled the remainder of the way, despite feeling pain he's never experienced before in his young life.

>> Man Joins Chicago Marathon While Trying to Run From Police: Prosecutors
Chicago real estate agent being chased by police on Sunday dashed onto the Chicago Marathon route and ran a
portion of the famed race before being tackled to the ground by police, authorities said.
Bryan Duffy, 29, allegedly joined a pack of runners — and bumped into several of them — after police began
chasing him on State Street, which is near the start of the marathon route, prosecutors said.
Erin Meyer says Duffy faces additional charges for allegedly endangering runners:

>> Popular New Exercise App Just Tells Users They Ran 5 Miles A Day No Matter What
Having reached nearly 2 million downloads within its first month of release, the new smartphone app ProMiler has
quickly become one of the nation’s most popular exercise tools by informing users that they ran five miles each day
no matter what, the app’s creators told reporters Friday . “With ProMiler, achieving your exercise goals is as simple
as turning on your device in the morning and being notified that you’ve already run five miles,” ProMiler spokesman
John Lyons said while demonstrating the app, which uses advanced GPS technology to display a new, randomly
generated five-mile running route near the user’s location every day. “The more you take advantage of ProMiler, the
better runner you become, as the app automatically reduces your running time by several seconds per day. And with
our ‘Calories Burned’ counter staying fixed at the number 1,000 each day, 100 percent of our users report hitting their
fitness targets. The results speak for themselves.” Officials added that the app comes pre-synced with Facebook,
allowing users to automatically post their time and running route on their feed for all their friends to see.

>> Man Walks in South American Rainforest at Night, Sees Spider the Size of a Small Puppy
In a story that will haunt my dreams, entomologist Piotr Naskrecki was walking through the rainforest of Guyana at
night in search of katydids, as that is what he was studying. He says that typically in his field research, he walks
slowly and quietly, so as not to disturb anything. He wears a headlamp, but turns it off on occasion, which he says
helps him zone in on the sounds around him. Naskrecki was listening for the distinctive sounds of katydid wings
when instead he heard something moving, crushing dry leaves under its feet. In his peripheral vision, he saw what he
thought was a large, hairy rodent.
It wasn't a large, hairy rodent, however. Instead, it was my very worst nightmare: the largest spider in the world. A
South American goliath birdeater (Theraphosa blondi), to be exact. This big, hairy bowl of wrong has legs up to a foot
in length, with feet that have hard tips and make clicking sounds as they move along. Its huge fangs are capable of
puncturing the skull of a rodent with one clutch. Its size was compared to that of a newborn pup.
Naskrecki said that not only did the spider make a hissing sound, rear its front legs and flex its monstrous fangs,
but it rubbed its legs against its abdomen, producing a hairy cloud that made Piotr's eyes tear up and burn for
several days afterward.

Start hiking/jogging/running promptly at 7:30am.
Go up Capri, left on Casale, and it becomes "Sullivan Fire Road." Stay on it for 60 minutes. The first part, about 2
miles, is pavement, then it becomes a wide dirt road. Stay on the right side to allow mountain bikers plenty of room
to pass.
Turn around at 8:30am.
Be back by 9:30am.
Sign out on clipboard and enjoy free refreshments courtesy of "Chuy"!!
Dogs permitted if they are attached to a responsible owner.
A-Force Angela and Dr. Mikey are both out of town so you are a herd without a herder this week. If you could elect
someone to please be the photographer and have him/her send pics to angela@mountaingoats.com, that would be
swell. Thanks!
