Help us Help the Challenged Athletes Foundation and you just might be the winner of Pumpkin Everything!
Participating in endurance events has changed our lives and we want to help make it possible for adults and kids
who face physical challenges to have the same opportunities to explore and expand their abilities and confidence
through sports.
To encourage more donations to our campaign for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, we've put together a huge,
heavy Pumpkin Everything gift basket filled with every imaginable non-perishable Trader Joe's pumpkin treat (value
c.$100). For each $ 25.00 donated to our campaign for CAF, we're putting the donor's name in once for our drawing
on Halloween night, October 31.
We'll deliver the basket to winners who live 50 miles or less from Mar Vista. If an out of towner wins, we'll have to
ask you to designate a friend or relative who's in driving distance to be the recipient -- or we'll hold it for you for when
you come to visit Los Angeles!
If you'd like to help us spread the word about our campaign for CAF, please invite your friends and family to donate
at http://payitforwardchallenge.org and to visit our Facebook page: http://facebook.com/payitforwardchallenge.
Thank you again for your support. Lamar and I participated in CAF's San Diego Triathlon Challenge this weekend
and were in awe of the enthusiasm, courage and achievement of so many athletes. Our Team Pay It Forward
Challenge for CAF has set a $ 5000 fundraising goal this year and we've still almost $ 1500 more to go. Please
donate today!
All good thoughts,
Rosalind

>> Montecito Heights hilltop to become parkland
A large parcel of undeveloped hillside will become public parkland instead of a private housing project after
government officials pledged $1.4 million to buy the the hill known as Flat Top.
The purchase of about 37 acres is expected to be completed next month, said Megan Moret, press deputy for
County Supervisor Gloria Molina, who agreed to use her office’s allocation of Prop A funds to finance the deal. The
funds will allow North East Trees, an environmental group, to purchase the property but the City of Los Angeles will
eventually take control of the property, Moret said.

>> Secret trails near Downtown LA require a smartphone to find them
Excessive screen time with electronic devices is the bane of many parents who wish their kids would spend more
time in the fresh air and sunshine. A new website is embracing mobile technology as a way of encouraging people to
get out and explore urban Los Angeles.
Open your Internet-connected phone or tablet to the Los Angeles State Historic Park Trails (lashp-trails.org) site,
and you’ll be informed how many meters you are from the park’s trailhead and shown a compass point directing you
toward it.
If you want any more information (of which there is a trove), you’ll have to start walking. Only after arriving will you
be given a choice of three trails to traverse. Even then, you won’t get much up front information, just a new compass
heading and distance counter directing you to the first stop on your journey.
At each stop along the way, pictures and captions open up, giving information about the historical and cultural
significance of the location.

>> Free National Park Service Festival Encourages Outdoor Recreation
Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to attend the National Park Service's inaugural Recreation Festival on Saturday,
October 25 from 10:00 a.m until 4:00 p.m. Also known as Rec Fest, this free, family-friendly event will take place at
Paramount Ranch in Agoura and will feature several hands-on opportunities to introduce families to the outdoors.
"Everyone who enjoys the outdoors learned about it from an informal guide, whether it was a friend, family member
or co-worker," said David Szymanski, superintendent of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. "It
usually started with one adventure. We want to give the next generation and their families the chance to try
something new, in a safe place, with all the equipment they need."
Equipment will be on hand so that attendees can try their hand at rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding,
fishing and nature sketching. Children and their families can even participate in a one-mile fun run. To register for the
fun run, please visit http://www.nps.gov/samo/recfest2014.htm. For more information, call 805-370-2301.

>> Five-Year-Old Runs 24:08 5K to Shatter Single-Age Record
His sister breaks a Georgia state age-group record in the same race.
Five-year-old James Reed ran 24:08 at the Hoofin’ for Habitat 5K October 18 in Duluth, Georgia, to set a pending
single-age world record by a whopping two minutes and nine seconds. In the same race, his sister Lauren set a
pending Georgia state record for 9-year-olds, breaking the 15-year-old record by one minute, nine seconds, and
running 20:52.
Their siblings Timmy, age 7, and Hannah, age 10, also ran blazing fast personal bests of 21:40 and 21:19,
respectively. Their father, Tim Reed, ran near Lauren, helping her in pursuit of the state record, and finished 11th
overall in 20:53.
The previous single-age world record for five-year-olds, as recognized by the Association of Road Racing
Statisticians, was actually held by James, but he didn’t realize that until he arrived home from Saturday’s race and
his parents received an email stating that the 26:17 he had run on October 4 had been ratified.

>> Oscar Pistorius Sentenced to Five Years in Prison
Double amputee Olympian guilty of culpable homicide in shooting of girlfriend.
Oscar Pistorius was sentenced on Tuesday to five years in prison for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva
Steenkamp, in his South African home in February 2013. The sentence concludes one of the most widely watched
courtroom trials in recent history.
Pistorius, the double amputee who ran with prosthetic lower limbs and became an Olympic 400-meter runner, was
convicted last month of “culpable homicide,” akin to negligent homicide or manslaughter, and could have faced a
sentence as long as 15 years or no jail time at all.
As Reuters reports, Judge Thokozile Masipa pronounced in a Pretoria court that five years was "fair and just to
society and to the accused." A lawyer for the Steenkamp family declared that “justice was served” and that Pistorius
was given “the right sentence.” The judge had previously cleared Pistorius of premeditated murder, the most serious
charge, and murder, which indicates an intention to kill but without having planned to do so.
Opinions vary on how much of his five-year term Pistorius will serve in prison. His lawyer, Barry Roux, said he
expects his client to be jailed for five months and to then serve the remainder of his time under house arrest. But a
South African state prosecutor believes the convicted runner is likely to be in prison for a third of the sentence, 20
months.

>> Springdale Cemetery hopes 5K race, actors draw new customers
Business at Springdale Cemetery will always be centered around selling lots, and what the chairman of the
Springdale Cemetery Management Authority Bob Manning calls “pre-need planning.”
To entice more people to buy lots, Springdale is busy diversifying the cemetery’s appeal to help guide people back
to the massive East Bluff property. “We know if we get people back into the cemetery, they’re going to be amazed at
its beauty,” Manning said. “Then, hopefully, they’ll think of us when time comes.”
October will see the cemetery host 10 events, everything from actors to runners amongst its winding roads and
numerous hills.
The actors of Prairie Folklore Theater took to the cemetery four times in the first two weeks of October. “They
come in, dress up like people who are buried there, and basically perform their life,” Mark Matzuak, Springdale
Cemetery general manager, said.

Since the cemetery first opened in 1857, there have been plenty of people for the actors to depict and for visitors to
experience. Groups of visitors have taken part in walking tours of the cemetery and have met the actors portraying
the famous inhabitants buried there. The actors have brought in dozens of people “who wouldn’t normally come to
the park,” Manning said.
Those wanting something more fleet of foot need not wait long. On Oct. 25, the cemetery will host the glow-in-thedark Screaming Pumpkin Race. Starting at 6 p.m., the majority of the race will be contained inside the cemetery
itself, with 5,000 glow sticks illuminating its path.

>> DLHS runner helps injured opponent
Melanie Bailey, a senior at DLHS says she simply “Did the right thing” Saturday while running girls varsity cross
country at the Ponderosa Golf Course in Glyndon, Minn., an EDC meet sponsored by Fargo schools.
At just past the two-mile mark of the 2.4 mile course the runner ahead of her, senior Danielle Lenoue, was limping
and crying, obviously in a great deal of pain, so Bailey stopped and offered help. Though the Fargo South runner
kept telling her to “go on” Bailey refused.
“She was just sobbing, I couldn’t leave her,” she explained.
So she tried having the girl lean on her, to help her walk to where they could get help, but that didn’t work. “It wasn’t
enough,” she explained.
“I felt so bad for her, I had to do something,” Bailey said, so she finally took the taller, heavier girl onto her back
and carried her to get medical attention, a distance of approximately a quarter of a mile.

>> Oscar Pistorius sentence brings quick reaction from sports officials
No matter how Oscar Pistorius ends up serving his five-year sentence for killing Reeva Steenkamp, Paralympic
officials say he will remain ineligible to compete for the duration, which rules him out of the 2016 Paralympics in Rio
de Janeiro.
In September, a South African judge found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide for shooting Steenkamp, his
girlfriend, multiple times through the door of a toilet cubicle in his home in 2013.
On Tuesday , he was sentenced to five years behind bars, but could be released from prison in less than an year to
serve the remainder of his time under house arrest.

>> Oscar Pistorius begins first day in hospital wing of prison
More than 20 months after he shot his girlfriend to death, South African double amputee athlete Oscar Pistorius
spent his first full day in prison Wednesday with eight cellmates, all of them disabled.
There are two blind men, another amputee with a prosthetic limb, and five men in wheelchairs, Department of
Correctional Services spokesman Manelisi Wolela said in a statement.
In court, Pistorius’ advocate, Barry Roux, had argued the athlete should be spared prison because of his
vulnerability and disability. However, Judge Thokozile Masipa found that accommodating Pistorius did not present an
insurmountable challenge to prison authorities.

sport, or perhaps determine whether he even has one.
“If anybody can put the pieces together on something like this, I think Alan can,” said Jerry Schumacher, the coach
of the Bowerman Track Club in Portland.
Webb has set a goal of competing at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Last month, at the race in Turkey, Webb
tackled 1.5 kilometers (about a mile) in the water, 40 kilometers (about 25 miles) on the bike and 10 kilometers
(about six miles) running on the road. He placed 26th out of 72 entrants — a solid showing despite being caught up

Thousands of runners have taken part in the 34th Beijing International Marathon, many wearing face masks amid
concerns about pollution.

One resident in the city told the BBC that the air smelt like burnt coal.
Estimates said that pollution soared above the maximum recommended World Health Organization levels.

>> Climbing high to save a threatened West Coast plant
Scientists plan to resurrect liveforevers from extinction after a devastating fire
Protruding from a cliff face, a diminutive desert plant peered across a sapphire channel as flames charred the earth
hundreds of feet below. The remote pinnacle should have protected the onlooker, as it had in the past, but the blaze
was too hot. This time, the mountain burned, and the tiny succulent, known as Verity’s liveforever, wilted and died.
As the May 2013 Camarillo Springs fire cooked 98 square kilometers of coastal valley just northwest of Los
Angeles, it almost wiped out the Verity’s liveforever, a dudleya succulent once abundant among the western Santa

>> Family of 4 Mountain Lions Caught on Video in Mountains Above Glendora
About 2 1/2 years after he set up his first surveillance camera along a game trail in the backcountry of Angeles
National Forest, Robert Martinez got footage of Southern California wildlife even he couldn’t believe.
He had seen mama bears and their cubs, ringtail cats, foxes, and even a mountain lion dragging a deer.
But footage one of his cameras caught on Friday showed what he described as a family of four mountain lions at
once.
That video, posted to YouTube Monday , was “by far the most exciting,” Martinez said. It showed four big cougars
loping across the leaf-covered ground, followed by another large mountain lion that appeared later that night.

>> Middle school team pulls off "The Ugly Kardashian" trick play
Missouri middle school pulls off incredible trick play.
Lewis and Clark Middle School recently pulled off one of the finest trick plays in football.
Meet "The Ugly Kardashian.
Lewis and Clark head coach Shawn Griggs told MaxPreps he was inspired by trick play "The Annexation of Puerto
Rico" of Little Giants fame.
"[I] wanted something catchy and funny, and always loved the name of the trick play from Little Giants," he said.
Thus, "The Ugly Kardashian" was born.
"When I said it the first time in the huddle they wouldn't stop laughing," Griggs said. "I threatened to change the
name of it because they would laugh everytime I said it."
Griggs said the laughter of the players wasted time at practice, but it was worth it.

>> From the SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINGOATS:
Search for lost souls at Solstice Canyon!
Costumes are encouraged but not required!
Prepare to explore some haunted mansions (or what's left of them) this week at a trail we haven't visited yet!
Solstice Canyon is part pavement and part dirt fire road. It is a little shorter than our usual, but that gives us more
time to explore (or get lost and hopefully found). Please take a few moments to research both of the links included
because I've never been there before either, so don't ask! Hopefully, any questions you have can be answered by
reviewing and printing out this information. (Hint, print the trail map and bring it with you.)
I'm not sure if there is a parking fee, so bring money just in case. MEET AT THE FIRST PARKING LOT CLOSEST
TO CORRAL CANYON ROAD (see the link below for the map).
Dogs are permitted on a leash.
Thank you to Richard T. for bringing treats and/or tricks. Thank you also to Regina for sending a list of haunted
trails.
SATURDAY 10/25/14 MEET AT 7:15AM.
Sign in on clipboard!!!
We start promptly at 7:30am with or without you!
Go at any pace you want. Turn around at 8:30am and come back to the start area. Sign in again on the clipboard
then help yourself to free refreshments.
