As our children learn through play at CMOM, here are a few of the benefits of our
updated exhibits that are coming soon!
• Playgrounds are a place for play and learning where children develop physical and
cognitive skills, and where they build valuable social relationships.
• The great outdoors is still the number-one spot for truly unstructured play.
Free play allows kids to do what comes naturally to them—make up their own games,
develop their own rules, explore their world with gusto.
• Kids playing outside are more apt to stretch their imaginations along with their
muscles.
• Handicapped accessible activities are being installed. The merry-go-round, seesaw and one of the zip-lines will be handicapped accessible.
• In addition to being a sensory-rich, visual tactile experience, this will be great
for developing fine motor skills.

CMOM Golf Scramble
Since opening 24 years ago, The Children’s Museum of Memphis has been a special place where children
and their families discover, explore and learn together. Your participation in the Annual Golf Tournament
allows us to continue making a difference in the lives of thousands of children and families each year.
The museum is a private, nonprofit, 501(c)3 educational organization. It receives absolutely no government
or taxpayer funding. Events like the Golf Tournament are crucial to the museum’s survival - and allow the
museum to continue operating its interactive, hands-on exhibits and educational programs.
Now more than ever, families need to enjoy quality time together. Every child deserves a safe place where
they can experience the joy of hands-on learning and learn skills they need to be successful in life.
The money raised from the tournament goes to: expanding outreach programs, providing free workshops
for teachers, keeping the exhibits operational, subsidizing group visits, paying for underprivileged families
to visit the museum, and providing art supplies for programs.

Games with Grandparents!

Saturday, September 6
10am-1pm
ring grandma, grandpa and the children to celebrate Grandparent’s
Month at CMOM. Play a classic family game like bingo, checkers or even
Jenga. Create a family tree, make a Grandparent’s Day gift or get your face
painted. Families are invited to enter the generations look-a-like contest and take
photos for a special keepsake. A refreshing treat of lemonade and cookies await
our special guests. It’s sure to be a memorable day out with the grandparents,
but you don’t have to have a grandparent present to join in the fun! Admission is
free for members and $12 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased at the door
and include museum admission. Grandparents can also enjoy special discounted
pricing for Grandparent Memberships that day.
Hispanic Heritage
Celebration
Saturday, October 11
11am-1pm
Learn about the important contributions that Hispanic Heroes
have made to the fields of science, education, politics, arts and
sports in America. Then, take your picture with your friends
Dora and Diego and play Spanish Bingo. Create a Mexican cuff bracelet, a carnival mask, a coffee filter flower and
make your own colorful maracas to play in the fiesta with Latin music and authentic Latin dancers. Activities are
free with museum admission.
Creepy Crawler Monster Bash!
Saturday, October 25, 1-3pm
Snakes...and spiders...and bats...OH MY! Creepy crawler
critters have invaded the museum and Dr. Shelly Counsel
and the University of Memphis' mad scientists are here
to save the day. Come find out about the "roost" of a
bat or investigate why werewolves hate salt. Join us
for this non-scary monster bash celebration with fun
ghostly experiments, spooky kooky crafts, candy stations,
costume parades and more. Dress as your favorite nonscary costumed character and meet us here.

"That's a Wrap" - Special Events at CMOM!
It was Freezing in July at CMOM! The Snow Sisters were our special guests as visitors from near and far gathered to sing
their favorite songs with the "coolest" sisters around. Among the different activites planned for the day was a fun edible craft
of making a snowman!
In August, it was a Back to School Blowout filled with four of everyone's favorite cartoon characters! Each character had a
special activity or craft for guests and then posed for pictures with their biggest fans for some memorable moments!

This summer was our first ever Smart Art Photography camp. We put real digital
cameras into the hands of every camper from ages 4 to 9 years old and allowed their
little imaginations to run wild. We were amazed! The participants learned about
“filling the frame”, lighting, backgrounds and angle shots. They were even allowed to
take the cameras home to take personal portraits of their families for t-shirt prints.
These are just some of the examples of what happens when we take the time to see
the world through the eyes of children. The cover photo on this issue of Sparks was
taken by one of the campers!
