O C T O B E R

Hello Maurice!
I am excited to begin this new journey here are Maurice Reformed
Church. Recently, in May, I graduated from Northwestern College over in
Orange City with a major in Christian Education/Youth Ministry and a minor in
Religion. Over the last two years I was blessed to have interned at Trinity
OFFICE
Reformed Church with their middle and high school youth. Prior to my last
567-4665
two years of college at Northwestern I spent a year a piece at UNI and Iowa
PRAYER LINE
State, and if you are wondering about my story, please ask!
567-3950
As I have mingled, been introduced to and gotten to know several of
you in my short time here, I have been reminded of my home church—an
RCA church similar to this church—in Oskaloosa. This is not because of my familiarity with Dutch last names—
though that helps quite a bit around here—but rather because of their devotion and commitment to family,
their children and the church community. I firmly feel that sense of family and community with all of you. So,
thank you! I have appreciated all of the friendly smiles, cheerful welcomes and your hospitality. Looking
forward to meeting and building relationships with you all!

My hope for Jr. GAP is that our students will grow in understanding of who
God is and what He has done and continues to do for us, to grasp the Gospel as grace-based
and not behavioral-based and to follow and participate in the mission of Jesus. My vision is that we will utilize
Scripture and story, service opportunities, worship, and prayer. My dream is that our students will know Jesus
as the incarnate, crucified and resurrected King. As we embark on this journey together, I am looking forward
to hearing from and spending time building relationships with parents, grandparents, youth leaders and with
our students; learning more about Jesus, and having fun along the way!

Senior High Youth Pastor –
Jarrod Puffenbarger
Jarrod will begin working at MRC on Wednesday or Thursday, October 1 or 2. Jarrod will
be commissioned into his position on Sunday,
October 12. Jarrod’s family includes his wife,
Stephanie, and their children, Marc, Emmalyn
and Alaina.
From the Pioneer Club Co-Leaders
Pioneer Club started out with another exciting evening on September 17th.
With over 100 kids present age 3 through 5th grade, the building was
buzzing with excitement and energy. This could not have happened without
all the wonderful volunteers who give of their time and talents to serve God
each Wednesday night. A simple thank you does not seem enough! We’ve
got more fun in store these next few months. So how can you get involved?
Pal Party Night – On October 29th, we will be having one of our annual Pal Party nights! Would you be
willing to hang out with our young people two nights out of the year? We are looking for more Pals for our
students. We will have a second Pal Party on January 21st. If you would like to commit to partnering with a
young person for those two nights, please contact Kelly Van Gelder. Pals are also asked to pray for their
student throughout the year. You may receive information about specific prayer requests the kids might
have. You may even choose to spend some time with your Pal outside of the two party nights. But that extra
time is up to you.
“Trick -or-Treat” Tables – So maybe hanging out with the kids is not for you…but you sure like to see
their faces light up! We need you also for a PAL night on October 29th. We will be doing our annual “Table or
Treat.” We are calling all small groups, ministry teams, growth groups, leadership groups, or anyone who
wants to see faces smile when giving out treats….we need you! You will be given a space and a table to
decorate for the fall harvest season. We ask that you provide a small treat for the kids so they can go around
and “trick-or-treat” with their Pal for part of that night. The more groups the better! Contact Steph Schmidt
or Amy Aberson if you/your group is interested or you can look for the sign up sheet on the information
booth!

“I want to thank you for supporting Words of Hope!”
That will be one of the phrases you may hear from me starting this month of October.
Beginning now in October I will be the Words of Hope Representative in Northwest Iowa. It is a part
time position of 10-15 hours per week. I will be meeting with pastors, mission committees,
consistories or congregations in East and West Sioux Classes, and maybe a little bit in Dakota and
Minnesota.
Another part of my responsibilities with Words of Hope will be to meet with individuals who
have a specific interest or who may be a donor to Words of Hope. As I meet with individuals or with a
group, certainly one of my opportunities will be to express “thank you for supporting Words of Hope.”
When God led me to accept the offer of Maurice Reformed Church to be a three-quarter time
pastor of calling and congregational care, I felt a certain peace and confidence that God assured me
that He would provide a second responsibility so that I would have full time responsibilities, even if it
would be between two different positions. God has been faithful in doing so.
As many of you are aware I have been working 10-15 hours a week with American Reformed
Church since Feb. 1 while they have been without a pastor. Pastoral candidates Michael and Elizabeth
Hardeman candidate at American on Sept. 28. So we will see where God leads them and American as
to whether they will be called. So my role with American will be diminishing in the near future (?) We
will see how God works in the midst of this. I will continue to assist American leadership until a pastor
(s) come, but my visitation of their members will diminish starting this month of October.
As I share this with you, it is not simply to keep you updated with what I am doing, but to
testify how God proves himself faithful. There are plenty of experiences in which we wonder where
God is when circumstances are trying – but each of us, myself included, need to identify and testify
how God is faithful.
I may sound a bit like a salesman, but if any of you want to talk with me about the ministry of
Words of Hope, just let me know! I would enjoy visiting with you about that ministry.
Pastor Gary

CROP Walk Sunday 5:00 October 12
Have you ever been hungry? Or thought about, “What is a way I can help
those who are hungry?” If you know you are going to be able to eat
sometime soon, it’s not bad; our bodies remind us that it’s time to refuel. But, if
you don’t know whether you will be able to eat at all, that’s something very
different.
A young girl in the USA says, “When you are hungry, you can’t think of anything
else.” Up to 25% of the money raised in a CROP Hunger Walk supports hunger-fighting efforts in that local
community. Last year, CROP Hunger Walks provided over $4 million dollars to some 3,000 soup kitchens and
food pantries across the U.S. In Brazil, a poor man describes poverty as, “coming home and seeing your
children hungry and not having anything to give them.” Last year CROP Hunger Walks raised over 15 million
dollars to assist hungry people around the world, providing food and other essentials to those recovering from
disasters, as well as tools and training to communities as they seek to establish food security for themselves in
places like Guatemala, Indonesia, Haiti, Cambodia, Kenya and more. Church World Service (CWS), one of the
Reformed Church in America’s partners for disaster response and hunger relief, is the organization that heads
up the CROP walk program. A farmer in Niger who received help through (CWS) celebrates, “Thanks to the new
well and the increased cultivation, we have more food for our family, and are able to sell the extra to gain a
little income.” These are the variety of ways Church World Service fights hunger and other associated causes of
hunger. From despair to hope. From hunger to food security.
We can do something to help! The CROP Hunger Walk is coming soon and we need you. We need people to
walk. We need you to come and learn more about the hungry and why people do not have the money to buy
food that they need. The evening of October 12, we will be walking through stations around Maurice and we
invite you to come and learn with us what it means to walk in “hungry shoes. And what we can do to help
fight hunger.
Again this October, in addition to our regular monthly special you will receive an envelope for the CROP walk
that you can place in the offering plate during the month. The money we collect will be divided evenly 50%
going towards Church World Service and 50% to a local organization—this year being Zestos.
Zestos is a faith based, non-profit, organization with its home base in Alton, Iowa. It is made up of volunteers
that seek to live out their faith as they care by providing food, clothing, shelter and a variety of other resources.
Zestos also hosts regular community “banquet” meals together with different area churches. In this way, they
distribute repackaged food and other needed items within the community to those in need. Along with finances,
from now until October 12, we will be collecting nonperishable canned food, personal hygiene items, diapers
and other paper goods, laundry and dish soap for the Zestos ministry. A collection box will be placed near the
east wall of the fellowship hall to place your items.
Challenge yourself to bring in an offering of food each Sunday of October, or give up one item of food from your
diet and give that money in the envelope… for someone who is hungry. By supporting both Church World
Service and Zestos, we are working to help meet hunger needs internationally and in our own community. Join
us in helping to stop hunger!
We need each of you. And together, step by step we can make a difference in the lives of hungry people around
the world.
Challenge yourself to bring in an offering of food each Sunday of
October, and the night of the walk… for someone who is hungry.

October Regular Monthly Special: FAMILY CRISIS CENTERS
At the Family Crisis Centers they have a motto, “Building Hope One Life At A Time.” By giving this month, you

during their time of need. In 2013, the Family Crisis Centers served over 400 persons in need of emergency
shelter, emergency housing, transitional housing and emergency and on-going care.
Wednesday Nights 6:30 pm-7:45 pm at the CONNECTION:
Join us at the CONNECTION in Maurice as this Group will have discussion each week on various Topics that
pertain to everyday life. Come when you can. Here are the topic questions for October:
October 1 question is: Do we try so hard to be something we are not, that we miss out on how
to truly live?
October 8 question is: Are we so busy that we miss out on what we are supposed to be doing?
October 15 question is: Does prayer really help?
October 22 question is: Are we so concerned with what others think that we miss out on being
who God created us to be?

MRC Fall Spiritual Retreat
November 15,16, 2014
Speaker: Mr. Bob Upgren
Bob Upgren is co-founder and president of “Cross Training Inc.”, one of the largest faith based
sports and leadership programs in the country. Each year Bob mentors thousands of young people
through the “Cross Training Basketball Camps.” Annually Bob leads sports mission teams to the
Dominican Republic for competition, mentoring, and work with an orphanage. Bob has spoken and
consulted about leadership with Fortune 100 clients. Some of his recent clients include Sharp
Electronics, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, National Basketball Association, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and
Verizon Wireless.
Bob comes with high recommendations wherever he speaks and leads. An added dimension
to Bob’s speaking is his gift of illustrating what he is teaching through chalk drawings. Bob will be
sharing chalk drawings in 2 of his 3 presentations at MRC.
Bob has been happily married to Shauna for the past 13 years and has two young daughters.
SESSIONS
“Allowing the Word to Lead You!” – Saturday morning, November 15
This session is for men and boys and will be held in the Family Life Center at 8:00 am with a
Continental Breakfast.
Bob wants to help make a shift in men’s thinking from “I think” to “The Bible says” because
this will help men be the most effective dads, workers, or employers.
“Creating a Jesus Culture in Your Home” – Saturday evening, November 15
This session is for families and will begin with a supper at 5:30 pm in the Family Life Center.
The teaching session will be in the sanctuary.
Building strong followers of Jesus is built on the culture that is found in your home. This
session deals with how to build a strong Jesus culture in your home and how that culture sets up your
family for success in life. This session includes chalk art illustration.
“How to Ignite a Faith that Hungers for More” – Sunday morning at 9:30, November 16
This session will happen at the one morning worship service at 9:30. There will not be
Sunday School. How often haven’t you thought, “Is that all there is to the Christian life?” Bob will
teach about how it is normal to want and actually find more in your spiritual life. This session
includes a chalk art illustration.
The Book of James
The book of James is filled with Godly guidelines for everyday living. Have
you been reading the book of James with your family? Here are some
ways to do that:
 Read the upcoming text for Sunday each day at your family devotions.
 Read a chapter a day with your family.
 Read the entire book of James as many times as you can in your
personal devotions.
If you still have the puzzle cross on your refrigerator, talk about what
values of spiritual growth were taught each Sunday.
By taking one or more of these suggestions, you will gain much more from
our study in the book of James.
Attaining Spiritual Maturity
Which of these important values that help you become spiritually mature are
you intentionally working on today? The Value of Prayer – one person suggested that we put ourselves in the shoes of the one we are praying for. For
example, if you are praying for a person to get a job, stop and think about
what you would be thinking and feeling if you had no job. Or, if you are
praying for someone who is going to have surgery, stop and think about
what you would be feeling and thinking if you were having surgery tomorrow. When you mentally put yourself in the other person’s shoes, you can
pray more clearly and forcefully. Praying this way helps a person become
more spiritually mature.
FUNDRAISER OCTOBER 15 – Mark your calendars!!!
Acts 4:32-37
The deacons of Maurice Reformed Church would like to invite you to a BBQ fundraiser in honor of
multiple families of our church who have been burdened with high medical expenses over the last
several months and years. This will take place on Wednesday, October 15 from 5:30-7:30 in the
Family Life Center. Stay tuned for more information in the following weeks.
Ladies' Morning
Brunch
Knowing God’s word is key to living a life that
glorifies him, and the MRC Memory Verse Challenge continues. Keep working on memorizing
the monthly verse on your own and keep looking for the verse in all sorts of places around
church. All congregation members, of any
age, are challenged to learn the monthly
verse. Ask someone today where they post
their reminder card! The memory verse for
October is “Let us not become weary in doing
good, for at the proper time we will reap a
harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9
Coming in November! Spend a Saturday
morning having your heart
uplifted and enjoying
brunch with other ladies! Join us in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 a.m. on
Saturday, November 8 as we share brunch
and listen to the story of Bethany (Raman)
Reeves. Bethany shares her story of God’s
faithfulness through many challenges in her
life. You will be encouraged and reminded
again of what a great God we serve! We
would love to have you join us, and bring a
friend who could also use some encouragement. Please sign up at the Information
Center by November 2 so we can have
enough brunch prepared. You can contact
Marissa Maassen or Jill Muilenburg with any
questions.
