Service design approach
• We explored student needs through service
design methodologies together with a design
agency. The library was lucky to be chosen as
one of four university driven projects in 2012
when Helsinki was the World Design Capital.
• Service design aims at designing the user
experience so that the services meet both the
needs of the users and attain the goals set by
the service provider.

Customer profiling
• Customer profiling was motive-based and reflected the customer’s use of
the services. Therefore one person could belong to several customer
profiles.
• Customer profiling was carried out on the basis of information gained
through the probes, group discussions and observation.
• Four central customer profiles emerged in the course of the mapping:
1. Lingerer
2. Visitor
3. Investigator
4. Patron

55
Critical feedback
• Availability of the study spots – too popular library
• The openness of the library and opportunity to the
public to use the library
• The opening hours (Monday – Friday 9-20, Saturday
10-16)
• The noice (a crowded library, group working areas)
• Furniture (some don’t like easy chairs and sofas)

Shortly
• On the whole – a success
• On the other hand
• - needs of certain research groups
• - the noise insulation between different zones
• - different size of group working rooms
• Don’t underestimate the popularity of an inviting
building
