No time for ideology They go hand in hand. Mass production needs mass consumption. Franklin D. Roosevelt understood. As of 2010, the top one percent of Americans owned 35.4% of all privately held wealth. The next 19% owned 53.5% leaving only 11% for the bottom 80%. That arithmetic doesn’t work for mass consumption. Instead of this kind of distribution during the 1930's, wealth was drawn into the hands of the few for increasing produced wealth. By taking increased produced-wealth out of the hands of the many, and having it in the hands of the few, there were less jobs and money to go around. As a consequence, the chips were concentrated in fewer and fewer hands. The others could only stay in the game by borrowing. When their credit ran out, the game stopped. No time for ideology Franklin D. Roosevelt was no ideologue. He was an inveterate economic tinkerer. By Thomas J. Lynch Metalworking Machinery Mailer FDR is considered one of the best U.S. presidents by many historical scholars. Some rank Roosevelt with Lincoln and Washington. There's a historical parallel here. Washington's help in founding our Nation, Lincoln keeping our Republic t o g e t h e r r e s u l t i n g i n C i v i l Wa r, a n d Roosevelt possibly saving our democracy during the Great Depression. The last time the U.S. installed a new president at a time when its stock market had fallen more than 50%, Roosevelt had TELL them you saw it in MMM some famously calming words: "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." FDR addressed fear over 80-years ago. He was right that fear itself could have real and damaging effects. The Great FDR was no dogmatic man. He once described Depression changed himself as a "juggler." 12 cont. on page 13 www.TheMachineryFinder.com Farming suffered as perhaps no other industry and it impacted the rest of the economy, too. Dust storms (above) were frequent in the nation's dust bowl during the long droughts of the 1930's. cont. from page 12 the lives of the American people. FDR's governmental programs helped them live through the 1930's and changed the future of this country forever. Franklin knew the truth, two years before his election ample credit was available at low rates but still businesses and people were reluctant to add new debt by borrowing, By May of 1930, auto sales had declined to levels below 1928. funded programs aimed at restoring the economy, relieving the suffering of the unemployed, and reforming our system. FDR followed no political dogma but instead would consider an array of different considerations for improving the economy. Some worked, others didn't. Prices in general began to decline, but wages held steady in 1930, then began to drop in 1931. Conditions were worst i n fa rmi n g area s, w h e re co mm o d i t y prices plunged. In 1930, 25% of the U.S. population lived on 6-million farms. One of his favorite ploys was to pull aside somebody as Secretary of Commerce Ickes, and whisper, "Harold, you're the best man I have for this question. Now I want you to thoroughly research this matter and get back to me on it. But keep it a secret, don't tell anybody else." Then Roosevelt would say the same thing to Labor Secretary Frances Perkins, Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau, Jr., top adviser Harry Hopkins, and other members of his cabinet and advisory team. After Roosevelt assumed the presidency, he promoted a wide variety of federally- FDR wanted options. He didn't care if they were from the right-or-left cont. on page 14 TELL them you saw it in MMM 13 www.TheMachineryFinder.com cont. from page 13 but he wanted flexibility to tinker with the choices and follow his political instincts. Although often recommended, one thing Roosevelt steadfastly refused to do was run up government spending deficits. Some historians felt his refusal to increase deficit spending may of prolonged the Depression. The Great Depression was long and deep. No one had any money. They were all in the same circumstance. Neighbors helped each other through hard times, sickness, and accidents. Families got together with neighbors at school programs, church dinners, or dances. Children and adults found ways to have fun for free---playing board games, listening to the radio, or going to outdoor movies. It wasn't really Roosevelt, it was the American people. It was an age of self-sacrifice. It was our fathers' and grandfathers' time. They were better than we are. Unlike common perception, the Great Depression wasn't a sudden collapse. The stock market turned upward in early 1930, returning to early 1929 levels before the October crash. Together, government and business actually spent more in the 1st half of 1930 than was spent in the stock market the previous year. The decline in the U.S. economy was the factor that pulled down most other countries at first, then internal weaknesses or strengths in each country made conditions better or worse. By late 1930, a steady decline set in which reached bottom by March 1933. TELL them you saw it in MMM A depiction of a destitute mother and her seven children. The price was countless American lives at war.■ 14 www.TheMachineryFinder.com IAAS Worldwide, LLC 14 S Main Street • Shrewsbury, PA 17361 P: 877-235-8299 • C: 410-353-3312 F: 717-235-8331 E: alandloeser@gmail.com W: http://www.iaasworldwide.com Make Sure to Like Us on Facebook Auction Date: Dates to be determined Location: Clayburn Incorporated 16306 Bittinger Road, Grantsville, MD 21536 Fork Trucks: Yale F/T Mod GLP030AFNUAV074, S/N A810 N03598U, 5,678#, 3,000# cap, 107", 15,452hrs, Hyster F/T Mod35 Fortis H35FT, 6,710#, 3,400#cap, 119.3", 7,291hrs, Hyster F/T Mod H30XL, S/N C001B09855L, 5,650#, 3,900#cap, 106", 5,339hrs, Hyster F/T Mod S50XL, 8,350#, 5,350#cap, 187", 4,129hrs, Hyster F/T Mod H30XL, S/N C001B07849K, 5,950#, 3,500#cap, 130", 1,765hrs, Hyster F/T Mod S50XL, S/N A187V11949J, 8,350#, 5,350#cap, 187", 9,457hrs, Hyster F/ T Mod S50XL, S/N A187V13977K, 8,400#, 5,250#cap, 187", 9,263hrs, Hyster F/T Mod S50XM, S/N D187V03985T, 8,938#, 5,400#cap, 189", Hyster F/T Mod H30XL, S/N C001B06152J, 5,650#, 3,900#cap, 106", 8,757hrs, Allis-Chalmers F/T Mod ACP80L PS SNGL, S/N ABD 97244, 12,155#, 8,000#cap, 110", Yale F/T Mod GLP035VXNURV084, S/N C810V04681J, 6,480#, 3,400#cap, 127.2", 4092 HOURS, Yale F/T Mod GLP035VXNURV084, S/N C810V04599J, 6,480#, 3,400#cap, 127.2", 4,206hrs, Hyster F/T Mod Fortis 35 H35FT, S/N F001V01890D, 6,710#, 3,400#cap, 119.3", Hyster F/T Mod 50 Fortis S50FT, S/NF187V18206J, 8,830#, 4,700#cap, 189", 5,143hrs, Yale F/T Mod GLP035VXNURV084, S/ N C810V04680J, 6,480#, 3,400#cap, 127.2', 1,976hrs, OMC Lincoln, Cushman 3-wheeled vehicle, Mod 4-77, S/N 898-408-7720, 13,547mi, GVWR 2,450#, w/Lincoln Electric Arc Welder, Mod Idealarc250, 30V, S/N AC-293862, Machinery: Miller Delta Weld 452 - MIG Welder, Lincoln Electric Arc Welder, Mod Idealarc250, 30V, S/N 29234B, Hypertherm Powermax 1100 Plasma Cutting System, No 08500, S/ N 1100-013494, Westinghouse Arc Welder, Style 1166250, S/N 3199588, 46amp, 220V, 1ph, 60cyc, Lincoln Welders, Solberga Drill Press, Hammond Kalamazoo Pedestal Grinder, 440V, 60cyc, 3ph, 2hp, 1,750RPM, Wells Metal Band Saw Mod 8M, S/N 13965, Wellsaw Band Saw Mod 1000, S/N 2529, Wellsaw Band Saw Mod 1000, S/N 2529, Clausing Drill Press Mod 2227, S/N 107915, 2,000rpm, 1.5hp, 460v, 60cyc, 3ph, Do-All Welder Band Saw Mod DBW-1A, S/N 5518758, 220v, 1ph, 20amp, 60cyc, Gallmeyer & Livingston Hydraulic Surface Grinder No 35, S/N S-351141, Gould & Eberhardt 20" Industrial Universal Shaper, Cincinnati Shaper 28" Heavy Duty Shaper, Greenerd Arbor Bench Press, S/ N 88A-3-3 4-8121, Black & Decker Pedestal Grinder, Black & Webster Black Diamond Drill Grinder Mod 0, S/N 13822, 7amps, 1ph, 1700rpm, 115v, 1/2hp, Wilton Strand Mod 20740 20" Variable Speed Drill Press, S/N 87751, 460v, 60cyc, 1700/3400 rpm, Dake 75H Model Hand Operated H-Frames Hydraulic Press, 75 Ton Capacity, 55" Length, 36” width, 87” height, 1957 Monarch Engine Lathe, No 42880, 16", 102"distance w/replacement parts, 1955 Sidney Engine Lathe, S/N 9797, 20" x12’, 2003 Chevy 2500HD Silverado, 4WD, Automatic, Vin 1GCHK24U93E152064, 38,000miles, with snow plow, Chevy C65 Dump Truck, Ford Dump Truck, Tennant Sweeper 355, S/N 355-2526, GVW 5,200#, Yale F/T Mod GLC050TFNUAE082, S/N E187V05320V, 5,000#cap, 9,008#, 189", 20592 hours, Machine shop - welding supplies, hoses, nozzles, parts, accessories, carts, station, steel, plate, pipe, hoists, jibs and more…. 15% Buyer’s Premium TELL them you saw it in MMM 15 www.TheMachineryFinder.com IAAS Worldwide, LLC 14 S Main Street • Shrewsbury, PA 17361 P: 877-235-8299 • C: 410-353-3312 F: 717-235-8331 E: alandloeser@gmail.com W: http://www.iaasworldwide.com Make Sure to Like Us on Facebook Building For Lease or Sale! Too many times in this industry, a machine is sold that won’t do what the user wants. Some vendors won’t back it up with service and the user never sees them again. Westbrook Engineering is in a class by themselves when it comes to serving the customer. They do the right thing for their customer. That’s why they have customers and have had the same customers for a long time. Westbrook’s modus operandi is to relate to the customers’ needs and keeping their word. They’re very professional, know their equipment, and stand behind it. Westbrook’s Open House had metalworking manufacturers displaying a myriad of machines. The equipment being demonstrated were: robotic welding, rolling of sheet, plate and cones, and hardware insertion. There was CNC punching, CNC sheet folders, CNC press brakes (Y1, Y2) with gauging and precision tooling. Press brake tooling, quick change press brake tooling, rota-a-broach magnetic base drills, pipe & tube bending. It was very unique,” Arcaro said. “Most distributors don’t do that but this is all part of Westbrook being a class act organization.” Legacy Al Szarek, once told this writer, “Stay positive.” It was a fitting tribute to the man that said it. His sons have not only stayed positive but embraced the manufacturing of the future. Eighteen years later, Al’s sons have kept bridging from their father’s era to a new era.
