AVT trained as a Speech Language Pathologist at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada and is a certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. He has published numerous workbooks and resources to help children of all ages learn to listen, talk, and develop cognitive skills. Some of those include Listening Games for Littles and the Cochlear Implant Auditory Training Guide. His listening activities have been translated into Dutch, German, Spanish, and French. Dave Sindrey has also developed several online resources including the ListeningRoom, Speechtree, Listeningtree, and Actividades de Audición for Programa Infantil Phonak in Spain. This year he is releasing 2 apps for the iPad through his own company Troll in a Bowl Apps and three more for Advanced Bionics. Dave Sindrey is an internationally renowned speaker with over 125 presentations to date across the US, Canada, South and Central America and Europe. Troll in a Bowl s Workshop Descriptions Student Panel (8:30 – 9:45) Moderated by Marion Bremner A panel of students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing will be asked to share stories about their educational experiences. Students will be chosen from a variety of educational settings. Five Practical Topics in Listening and Spoken Language Development (Morning & Afternoon Session) Presented by Dave Sindrey, founder of the Listening Room 1. Experience Books are the Best Books Learn to target meaningful receptive and expressive language through the use of home-made, custom-made books for children. Many ideas will be shared with examples from actual Experience Books. Learn how to embed language targets within engaging and meaningful home and school-based materials. 2. Strategies to Engage Parents as Partners It is well accepted that parent commitment is a requisite for positive outcomes. A parent may need explicit teaching and coaching to recognize the power of this level of involvement and then to realize it. Professionals working with the child at school will benefit from the same strategies. This practical workshop presents strategies and materials designed to empower and engage parents, caregivers and others involved in working closely with a child. 3. Engaging, Extending and Expanding on Excellent Apps Apps are now a well-used and common tool in the SLP and TDHH toolkit. How can we use them to engage and stimulate language and listening in the most powerful way? What are the pros and cons of different App features? Learn extension and expansion activities for some of the presenter’s favorite apps released to date. Participants will be introduced to many apps designed to promote vocabulary, listening and language and traditional books and materials that can be used in conjunction with them. 4. Bilingual Done Right Current research shows great gains for the multi-language learner. In Manitoba, many families are opting for their child to learn to speak an additional language other than English. Learn which treatment models work and the strategies professionals can use to promote families who choose a multi-language model. 5. Songs and Stories with Big Payoff This session will focus on practical and fun songs, stories and listening activities that can go with them. Learn the best strategies for parents and school-based professionals concerning song and story for their child or student. Participants will learn the proven benefits of including music and singing. Participants will learn best practices for reading with and reading to children in terms of literacy, listening and language. Dave Sindrey’s session will include a “make and take” activity. Understanding the Implications of Hearing Loss (10:00 – 12:00) Presented by Cindy Neil and Taylor Hallenbeck This session is for those new to Deaf and Hard of Hearing education. Participants will gain a basic understanding of hearing loss and its effects through a variety of simulation activities. The workshop will also touch on classroom acoustics, amplification systems, and communication considerations. Educational Programming, Curriculum Adaptations & IEP’s for K-12 (1:00 – 4:00) Presented by Karen Graham and Verena Krueger This session focuses on programming for students who are DHH in the K—12 setting. Strategies discussed will include curriculum adaptations/modifications, implementing IEP goals and conducting tutorial sessions.
