Term 4 Week 2
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
He mihi tenei kia koutou nga matua, me nga kaitiaki o a tatou tamariki. Tena koutou katoa
Our 15 children on the Melbourne Exchange Programme are having a fantastic time with their
exchange buddies from Caulfield Junior College, our ‘sister school’ in Australia. Lead teacher
Sue Gray emailed me yesterday to say how proud she was of the way they have represented
Kenakena School. In her email, Sue wrote:
“One of the things that make it really special is the generosity of a lot of the teachers here
at Caulfield. They have really looked after us. I feel like I have made new friends.
The other part of this trip of course is how proud I am of our students. They have been
outstanding in every way. Last night at the BBQ I spoke to several parents and they are
keen to keep our students. They are so impressed and only hope their children are as
good.”

KENAKENA SCHOOL CLASSES VISIT THE EXPRESSWAY SITE
Kenakena School Classes from the Kowhai (Years 1&2), Koromiko (Years 3&4) and Kahikatea
(Years 5&6) teaching teams have responded to an invitation from Goodmans Ltd to visit the
expressway worksite at Te Roto Drive. They were able to see and understand the work being
done to develop the expressway and examine the machinery up-close.
Children from the Koromiko (Years 3&4) Team enjoy their visit to the work site at Te Roto
Drive

GALA PREPARATION: JUST OVER TWO WEEKS TO GO!
The reality for public education in New Zealand is that schools are under-funded. Our gala,
the Kenakena School Festival of Fun will bring in much needed additional funding to our
school to enable us to run the range of programmes we do here; The Performing Arts,
Dyslexia, Boys Mentoring, Reading Recovery as well as providing funds for physical
resources including information and communications technology.
You’ve seen the School Parent Network’s advertisements for volunteers to help out on the
day. We still have some gaps in the volunteer list. Please don’t think that someone else will
do it. Please become involved! It’ll benefit your kids.
TEACHER ONLY DAY
A reminder that our annual School Review and Planning Day takes place on Friday, November
14. It is on this day that we review our 2014 operations and begin the planning process for
2015.
This year our focus is on reviewing learning projects and professional development and
focussing on where these areas will go in 2015.
By beginning this process now and devoting un-interrupted time to it, we can begin next year
very well prepared.
For more information on teacher only days, check out our website
www.kenakena.school.nz.
2015 ENROLMENTS
We are in the process of planning for 2015. If you have a child starting school as a five-yearold next year and haven’t yet informed us, please contact Lynda at the school office to let us
know.
If you have friends, workmates, relatives or acquaintances who are intending to enrol their
children at Kenakena in 2015, please encourage them to get in touch.

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Raising Boys and Girls - 30th October, Southwards, 7.30pm
Tickets Available online from Te Horo School www.th.school.nz
“We’re constantly being bombarded with people telling us that boys are in crisis, or girls are, or
both. We hear an awful lot about the lack of male role models on boys, and the impact of pop
culture on girls. We also hear a lot about Mars and Venus and all the latest ‘brain science’ which
at first glance seems to be saying that boys and girls are so radically different we apparently
come from completely different planets. What’s really going on with our boys, and what’s really up
with our girls? In this entertaining, thought provoking, and informative show Nigel will give you
the answers to all this stuff as he takes the audience on a ride through the business of getting
boys and girls all the way through childhood, adolescence, and beyond, in a complicated world.
The talk includes some language that may offend”
