Term 4 Week 1
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
He mihi tenei kia koutou nga matua, me nga kaitiaki o a tatou tamariki. Tena koutou katoa
Welcome to Term 4, especially to families new to Kenakena School. Many of the parents I saw during
the second week of the holidays said their children were looking forward to coming back to school;
some were really looking forward to their children coming back to school! Most said they had also
enjoyed having their children at home.
We begin the term with a roll of 549.
We’re looking forward to another Exciting, Motivating, and Positive term with fabulous learning
opportunities for your children.
2014 MELBOURNE EXCHANGE PROGRAMME
The 14 students participating in this year’s exchange programme flew out to Melbourne yesterday
afternoon for a week of wonderful learning experiences. They will be hosted by families from our
sister school, Caulfield Junior College (www.caulfieldjc.org.au), who will look after them and enable
them to experience day-to-day life in a city of around four million people.
Our students will participate in a range of learning activities including a mid-city search and find,
negotiating at Queen Victoria Market, visiting the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Old Melbourne
Gaol, Melbourne Museum and involvement in an Aboriginal Incursion, as well as attending classes at
the school.
Expedition leader Sue Gray and teacher Laura Yousif (the recipient of the Board of Trustees Study
Grant) are accompanying the children.
SAFETY IN THE SUN AND SCHOOL-ISSUE SUN HATS
MEMO TO PARENTS: SAFETY IN THE SUN AND THE WEARING OF
SCHOOL - ISSUE SUN HATS
October 16, 2014
Now that summer is here, it is important that you give consideration to keeping your children safe in the sun.
At school we try to schedule most outdoor activities for when the sun is not at its most fierce and ensure your
children wear their school-issue sun hats. We need you to play your part in the sun smart partnership by sunblocking your children before they leave for school and provide sensible clothing that covers their shoulders.
The school-issue sun-hat system has been run as follows:
o
o
o
o
o
o
The school owns monogrammed sun hats for all students.
The hats are numbered so we know which hat has been issued to which child.
They are all of the same design and are issued to your children in Terms 1 and 4.
The sun-smart design shades their face, neck and ears and children must wear them during Term’s
one and four.
The hats are individually stored in classrooms and must not be taken home. The school will organise
for the hats to be washed.
Hats will be collected at the end of Term 1 and re-issued at the beginning of Term 4.
. . . However, we have been having some issues maintaining the effectiveness of this system because of the
number of children who are losing or misplacing their hats. The replacement of lost hats has cost us $1000 to
cover. This has been partially due us having a very poor response to invoices being sent out to the parents of
children who no longer have their hats.
We will need to re-look at our school-issue hat system for on-going viability and see what changes we
need to put in place to make it work. In the meantime, we need to implement some immediate changes
to manage your children’s safety in the sun. Those changes are:




If your child no longer has a school-issue sunhat because it has been lost or misplaced, he or
she will need to wear a similar hat with a wide brim. (Baseball cap-style hats will not be suitable as
they do not protect the back of the neck). Please clearly label your child’s hat with their name.
If you have received an invoice for a lost hat, your child’s hat will be replaced upon payment of
the invoice.
To ensure we have enough school-issue hats for younger children, Years 7&8 students will be
able to return their school-issue hats if they would prefer to wear their own suitable hat.
From next Monday, October 20, any children who do not have a suitable hat will be required to
sit in the shade during morning tea and lunchtime breaks.
TEACHER ONLY DAY
A reminder that our annual School Review and Planning Day takes place on Friday, November 14. It is
on this day that we review our 2014 operations and begin the planning process for 2015.
This year our focus is on reviewing learning projects and professional development and focussing on
where these areas will go in 2015.
By beginning this process now and devoting un-interrupted time to it, we can begin next year very well
prepared.

Tickets Available online from Te Horo School www.th.school.nz
“We’re constantly being bombarded with people telling us that boys are in crisis, or girls are, or
both. We hear an awful lot about the lack of male role models on boys, and the impact of pop
culture on girls. We also hear a lot about Mars and Venus and all the latest ‘brain science’ which
at first glance seems to be saying that boys and girls are so radically different we apparently
come from completely different planets. What’s really going on with our boys, and what’s really up
with our girls? In this entertaining, thought provoking, and informative show Nigel will give you
the answers to all this stuff as he takes the audience on a ride through the business of getting
boys and girls all the way through childhood, adolescence, and beyond, in a complicated world.
The talk includes some language that may offend”
