Dear Delegate,
The IAAIA annual conference is back! This time Malaysia Airlines is hosting the 23rd IAAIA Annual Conference
event, which will be held in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia from 26 – 29 October 2014 at the Borneo Convention
Centre.
This two and a half day conference, with the theme “Striking the Right Balance” emphasizes the need to
achieve the right balance between assurance, compliance, risk, consulting services and meeting
stakeholders’ expectations. With the current unpredictable state of the industry, we are offering many best
practices, thought provoking and interesting sessions throughout the conference. We hope to make your
stay in Kuching a memorable and eventful one!
Learning Objectives:
Distinguish the value added role of internal auditors in supporting the organization achieve its
business objectives.
Discover the types of audit program used for specific airline related areas, i.e. engineering
maintenance, aircraft cyber security, continuous auditing etc.
Recognize the role of risk management as a fundamental element to support effective internal
control and corporate governance practices.
Identify vital best practices and share experiences to discover trends in keys areas of industry
relevance, i.e. fraud prevention, big data and 3 lines of defence.

Information
Kuching, also known as the ‘Cat City,’ is situated at the banks of the Sarawak River on the North-Western part of
the island of Borneo. It is the largest city in the entire Borneo and placed in the fourth place for the biggest city in
Malaysia. Once the capital of the White Rajahs of Sarawak, Kuching is a good base for exploring Sarawak. For all
of you adventurous people out there, Kuching offers a lot of activities that bring you a step closer to nature.
Conference Venue
The conference will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre,
Kuching (BCCK) which is located 8km from the city centre. It
is about 15 minutes from Kuching City Centre and 13 minutes
from the airport.

Transportation to the Hotel
Kuching International Airport (KCH) is Sarawak's main
gateway. Nestled in the Golden Triangle of Kuching, Pullman
Kuching is just 11km away from Kuching International Airport
and is only 20 minutes drive. Taxis are readily available. A
reasonable taxi fare from airport to the Kuching City is RM 30
(approx USD 9).
Local Tourist Attractions
Kuching Waterfront
The Kuching Waterfront, a landscaped promenade along the banks of the Sarawak River was an important place
in the founding of the city. Historical buildings like the Chinese History Museum, the Sarawak Steamship Building
and the Square Tower stand alongside modern restaurants, artistic water displays and local food stalls.
Main Bazaar
Main Bazaar is the oldest street in the city and a renowned antique arcade. Souvenir hunters can discover an
assortment of traditional brassware, pottery, tribal arts and jewellery in the many treasure troves housed in old
Chinese shophouses.
Cultural Tours
There are national parks around including Bako National Park and Gunung Gading National Park. There are more
activities that have to be done or else your visit to Kuching is incomplete, which includes Sarawak Cultural Village,
Longhouse Adventure, Kuching Kayaking, visit to Borneo Highlands, Orangutan Project at Matang Wildlife Centre
and more.

1. Kuching City & River Tour (Min. 2 persons) from MYR135 per person
This tour encompasses Kuching in land and water. We start at Kuching’s
Chinatown, the Cat Statue (Kuching means “Cat” in Malay), the colourful
Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple, and the world famous Sarawak Museum
across the river, then onwards to the unique Cat Museum, the magnificent
State Mosque and the Astana, the former residence of the White Rajahs.
Return via the golden-domed City Mosque and proceed on foot through
Old Kuching, squeezing through narrow alleyways crammed with spice
dealers and textile shops. Pass by the heritage buildings of the White
Rajah era, the Pavilion, the Square Tower, the Court House, the Charles
Brooke Monument and the Post Office. Then take an hour pontoon river
cruise viewing the city from the river.
2. Bidayuh Longhouse Day Trip (Min. 2 persons) from MYR80 per person
Visit Anah Rais longhouse, belonging to Bidayuh or the Land Dayak tribe,
second largest Dayak tribe in Sarawak. The village is located 45 minutes
from Kuching. The focal point of the village is a large and well-preserved
traditional bamboo longhouse, which is home to dozens of families. The
tour introduces visitors to the unique architectural and cultural features of
the longhouse and the traditional farming lifestyle of the Bidayuh people.
3. Sarawak Cultural Village (Min. 2 persons) from MYR90 per person
The Sarawak Cultural Village is a living monument to Sarawak’s unique and
diverse cultures in an accessible, visitor-friendly setting. This award-winning museum has seven authentic traditional buildings set amidst a scenic
17-acre site, populated by members of Sarawak’s many ethnic groups
going about everyday activities. These include wood and bamboo carving,
beadwork, weaving, sago making, sugar cane crushing, pepper growing
and the preparation of bird’s nests. Visitors can learn how to throw a Malay
spinning top, shoot a Penan blowpipe or pick out a tune on an Orang Ulu
“sape”. The tour concludes with a colourful multi-ethnic cultural performance.

4. Santubong Wildlife Cruise (Min. 2 persons) from MYR160 per person
This tour lets you see some of Sarawak’s fascinating wildlife around the
rivers of the Santubong Peninsular. The cruise starts at the Sarawak Boat
Club and will make its way to the mouth of the Santubong River, where
Irrawaddy dolphins are often spotted. Then roam the mangrove-lined
rivers looking for wildlife. As the light starts to fade, go in search of the rare
Proboscis monkey and crocodiles. After this, the boat proceeds further up
river where fireflies gather at night. Watch the fireflies move around the
branches of the mangroves, momentarily lighting up the night sky.
The Great Orangutan Project at Matang Wildlife Centre
The Great Orangutan Project being run at Matang Wildlife Centre has been
named the “Best for Responsible Wildlife Experience” at World Responsible Tourism Awards 2013, and focuses on the conservation and protection
of Borneo’s most fascinating and enchanting species – the orangutan.
Kuching Orchid Garden
Located in a park, the Orchid Garden serves as one of the city's major
tourist attraction offering both horticultural and botanical interests. The
orchid garden boasts a magnificent collection of 79,000 mother plants
comprising 112 species and hybrids of orchid.
Cat Museum
Cat Museum or Muzium Kuching is a museum dedicated specially to the
city's name. The theme of the museum – “Cat” is undoubtedly one of a kind
in the world with almost everything that are related to cats can be found in
the museum.
Bako National Park
Established in 1957, it is the oldest and one of the smallest national parks
in Sarawak. It features multiple biomes (including rainforest), abundant
wildlife, jungle streams and waterfalls, secluded beaches, and trekking
trails.

Sarawak Overnight Excursions and World Heritage Caves of Miri & Mulu
1. 2D/1N Lemanak River Safari (Min. 2 persons) from MYR558 per person
A fascinating insight into traditional Sarawak culture and lifestyle
Day 01 : A 225 km car/coach journey takes you through lush green
countryside dotted with padi fields, pepper gardens and rubber plantations, and flanked by rugged jungle-clad mountains. Along the way, stop
off at the Serian farmer’s market, visit a pepper garden and view carnivorous pitcher plants. Stop for lunch at a roadside bazaar deep in Iban
country. Arrive at Lemanak jetty mid-afternoon for a longboat ride up the
Lemanak River, passing through typical Borneo countryside with a
longhouse tucked behind almost every bend in the river. Arrive at the
Longhouse and visit the “entire village under one roof.” Dinner, featuring
delicious fresh jungle produce. After dinner, we will proceed for some
evening’s entertainment, including traditional dancing, music, games and
a glass or two of tuak (rice wine) with the longhouse chief. The Iban are a
fun-loving people, and visitors are expected to join in! Overnight in the
Longhouse. You will be spending your night at the ruai (the longhouse
common room). As for the washroom / toilet facilities you will be sharing
with the Ibans.
Day 02 : After breakfast, enjoy a blowpipe demonstration and try shooting
one yourself. Then take a short walk around the vicinity of the longhouse,
and learn about the traditional uses of rainforest plants in Iban culture.
Depart for Kuching via the same route. Lunch is served en-route.
2. 2D/1N Lemanak & Hilton Batang Ai Combo (Min. 2 persons)

Day 01 : Journey to Serubah or Kesit Longhouse as per Lemanak River
Safari (see overnight Lemanak). Tour the longhouse and enjoy a demonstration of blowpipe shooting. Return downriver for transfer to Batang Ai
Jetty. After a 20 minute boat ride across the 24 sq km Batang Ai Hydro
Lake, arrive at the luxurious Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort. Dinner,
and accommodation at the resort.
Day 02 : Breakfast at the resort. Depart for Kuching via the same route.
Lunch is served en route.

3. 3D/2N Miri from MYR1273 per person
Day 01 : ARRIVAL MIRI
(Dinner)
Pick-up from Airport and proceed to check-in at hotel. Orientation and city
tour will start with a drive to Canada Hill overlooking the city. You will be
briefed on the historical development of Miri City, developing rapidly from
a small village in the 1800s to a very cosmopolitan and modern city. This
has been largely due to the influence of oil discovery when Malaysia's first
oil was spud in 1910. This oil well is now known as The Grand Old Lady
which sits as a relic on Canada Hill. Continue on to visit the bustling
Farmer's Market or commonly called the 'Tamu' where you will see the
various local vegetables, fruits and food brought in by the natives and local
farmers from around Miri. Other highlights include Miri Heritage Centre and
Old China Town. Dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 02 : MIRI (Breakfast/Lunch)
Breakfast at hotel. Pick-up at the lobby. Start the scenic drive to Niah
National Park. Drive time will take approximately 2 hours going through oil
palm platation and Iban longhouses. On arrival at the Park Headquarters,
register and then cross Niah River. We will visit the Niah Museum which
houses some of the relics from Niah caves. (The museum is closed every
Monday). Later we will take a 3km plank walk to cave's entrance. The walk
goes through mixed dipterocarp forest. Niah cave is an important archeological site where the first human existence in S.E Asia was found dated
40,000 B.C. It is also where edible bird’s nest are collected. We will explore
the Trader's Cave, Great cave and eventually to the painted cave where
caves painting are found on the wall. Return to the Park Headquarters for
lunch. On the way back to Miri, we will stop at the Lambir National Park for
a refreshing 20 minute trek to the waterfalls before continuing the return
journey to Miri.
Day 03 : DEPART MIRI (Breakfast)
Breakfast at hotel. Full Day at leisure before your transfer to Miri airport for
your flight back to Kuching.
4. 3D/2N Mulu from MYR1493 per person
Day 01 : ARRIVAL MULU ON MASWINGS FLIGHT

Meet on arrival at Mulu airport and transfer to your choice of accommodation. In the afternoon transfer to Mulu Park Headquarters and take the 3km
plank walk to explore Lang and Deer caves. Watch the bats fly out if weather permits and return to the Park Headquarters and transfer to your
accommodation.
Day 02 : MULU (Breakfast/Lunch)
Breakfast at hotel. Pick-up at the lobby. Depart by longboat to explore
Wind Cave with a stopover at the Penan Longhouse. Later proceed to
explore Clearwater Cave. Picnic lunch served at Clearwater hut before
transfer to your accommodation.
Day 03 : DEPART MULU ON MASWINGS FLIGHT
(Breakfast)
Breakfast at hotel. Full Day at leisure before your transfer to Mulu airport
for your flight back to Kuching.
