PARTNERS CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: IMPACT OF SEX ADDICTION ON LOVED ONES CARA W. TRIPODI, LCSW, CSAT CONFERENCE SUMMARY This program will provide insight into the treatment of partners of sex addicts. The impact of betrayal and addiction is devastating and often results in a prolonged and, for some, a protracted healing process. Often, when partners seek help, they feel misunderstood by therapists who don't understand their particular needs and, in their attempt to help, inadvertently alienate the partner who may drop from treatment or worsen under the care of the therapist. Ms. Tripodi's social work values and advanced training in addiction and trauma-related therapies have allowed her to develop a treatment model that leads to effective outcomes for those victimized by another's sexual infidelities. In this program, Ms. Tripodi will describe the common trauma responses in partners and the impact of those blind to betrayal. She will address the pitfalls that can occur in early treatment and provide helpful strategies to empower therapists in their work with partners. The importance of the clinician's use of self in learning and developing new and creative ways to meet the partner of a sex addict "where he/she is at" will be emphasized. OBJECTIVES 1. 2. 3. Assess the critical needs of partners through trauma and crisis informed interventions and focusing on client stabilization. Evaluate therapist use of self in treatment partners facing addiction.
