Document 377279

It’s no surprise that music tells
amazing stories. Myths, fables, tall tales, and
short stories have all inspired composers to write their
most engaging and colourful music. The TBSO and I
invite you to join us for a season filled with enchantment, beauty, and adventure, with timeless tales told
through music.
Some of the wonderful characters and stories we’ll
experience through this season’s music include: Wagner’s Ring, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Alice in
Wonderland, Babar the Elephant, the enchanted forest
of Midsummer Night’s Dream, the full ballet of Prokofiev’s ravishing Cinderella, the Thunder Bay Symphony
Chorus celebrating their 40th anniversary with the
saints and sinners of Carmina Burana, Maurice Ravel’s
beguiling musical stories from Mother Goose, and
finally the hilarious exploits of the way-under-appreciated Canadian heroine, PianoWoman.
In fact just about all great music has a story to tell, including the symphonies of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert,
which you’ll find woven into this year’s program, along
with Beethoven’s heroic Emperor Concerto, Mendelssohn’s evocative Violin Concerto, and Into the Wonder,
a world premiere by Canadian composer Jordan Pal.
You’ll find unmatched variety and colour in our Pops
and Cabaret series, with genre-bending chanteuse
Sarah Slean, crooner Michael Vanhevel, Brian Jackson’s
Night at the Oscars, Jeans ‘n Classics, Flamenco
Caravan, the music of Stan Rogers and Gene
MacLellan, and a special silent film show.
Music has a unique power to draw us through the
doors of the imagination. Come share with us a season
of drama and adventure like none other.

Cinderella
7PM ˚ Wednesday, February 4, 2015 / TBCA
Canada’s Ballet Jörgen’s Cinderella is a classical
ballet with modern, dramatic sensibilities. Cinderella is tormented by her sisters until her life
is changed by the appearance of an old woman,
a seed, and magical fairies. When Cinderella
wins the hand of her prince, her stepsisters
find their world turned upside down.
Bengt Jörgen’s choreography takes us through
the misfortunes and fortunes of Cinderella and her
stepsisters. Framing the action are sets by Glenn
Davidson that create a fantastical environment
based on the idea of the natural world reclaiming
man-made structures. Costume designs by Robert
Doyle playfully echo each character’s personality.
