On Masterpiece Contemporary, Bill Nighy reprises his role as a master spy in Worricker, Sundays, November 9-16, at 9:00 p.m. The two new thrillers wrap up an intricate plot that began with “Page Eight” in 2011, involving secret crimes and political corruption. The Worricker Trilogy follows the exploits of the intensely private and scrupulous Johnny Worricker – from MI5 headquarters in London to exile on a Caribbean island to life on the run with his former lover and fellow agent. A spy who prefers the black-and-white certainties of the Cold War, Worricker finds himself increasingly out of his element as the distinction between ally and enemy dissolves into the amorphous alliances of the 21st century. Navy SEALs – Their Untold Story premieres on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, at 9:00 p.m. Despite the widespread attention paid to the SEALs (Sea, Air and Land) since they eliminated Osama bin Laden, the story of how these clandestine commandoes evolved in response to changing threats – from WWII to the War on Terror – and how their extraordinary abilities shaped U.S. and world history, has remained untold. Few people know the unheralded tales of the first frogmen who dared to face almost certain death with little training, scant equipment and untested tactics. The Navy’s first Special Warfare Units go back to World War II and, without them, many of the chapters of that conflict – and in subsequent conflicts – might have been written with different outcomes. Classic Hollywood Musicals airs on Sunday, November 30, at 6:30 p.m. Featuring some of the most iconic images ever recorded on film, five classic Hollywood musicals – The Wizard of Oz, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Singin’ in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and Viva Las Vegas – take viewers on a journey across the Golden Age of movie musicals, spanning the days from the Great Depression all the way to the Civil Rights Movement. With foot-stomping dance numbers, Technicolor fantasy worlds, and soaring ballads sung by some of the world’s most beloved stars, these movies still inspire audiences to laugh, love and dream – even when times are tough. Pitching on-air with Charles Beck calms any nerves and is my ticket to success! “I’m a BIG fan of public broadcasting and expect I will be for years to come.” MPBN’s Clare Hannan Chief Financial Officer MPBN’s CFO Clare Hannan takes a look at MPBN and her own passion for public broadcasting. Have you always been a fan of public broadcasting? As long as I can remember, I’ve been a fan of public broadcasting. As a schoolaged kid, PBS was a key part of our four-channel repertoire, with Zoom being a fan favorite, in addition to Nature and Upstairs, Downstairs, among others. NPR came on the scene for me in my early adult years as I became more of a consumer of news and local journalism. When I had my son over 12 years ago, I found a new appreciation for PBS with the incredible kids’ programming. I guess it’s fair to say that I’m a big fan of public broadcasting and expect I will be for years to come. What brought you to MPBN? What challenges face an organization like ours? After a 17-year tenure at Portland Public Library as finance director, upon completion of a $7.3M renovation, I decided it was time for a change. The challenge was finding an organization with a similar mission, where I could feel passion for my work. Public broadcasting has such a similar mission, and MPBN was a big part of my life, so the choice for me was perfect. As far as challenges go, secure funding is a constant challenge at MPBN. Sustaining a “margin of excellence” with all of our programming requires careful vigilance on the finance side. We hear you on air during Super Thursday pledge drives. Do you enjoy doing that? How nervous were you the first time? Being on-air is invigorating! I think it’s a flashback to my public speaking background, studying under Barbara Browne at Bangor High School. It is What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t working at MPBN? I am fortunate to live very close to Casco Bay and enjoy getting out on the water with my husband, son and our dog, Jose. In addition to that, finding the opportunity to take in the wide range of cultural offerings in Greater Portland is always something on my “find the time” list. Besides MPBN, what is your favorite part of living in Maine? Maine never fails to delight me. It is a beautiful state with vibrant culture, incredible people and diverse natural beauty. I guess if I had to pick the best part of living in Maine, I’d say that every summer I fall back in love with this place. It is quite sublime. If you weren’t in finance, what would you be doing? I am a keen observer of life – nature, people, architecture – you name it. I enjoy responding to and interacting with all of these elements through photography. I’d love the opportunity to spend more time doing it. Thanks Clare! I (Photo: Matt Cosby.) Calling All MPBN Super Heroes (that’s YOU!) November 13 is Super Thursday, MPBN’s One-Day Membership Drive! I BIDDEFORD AND PORTLAND, MAINE | TANGIER, MOROCCO www.une.edu November 2014 Experience 7 Every week, the MPBN Community Films series brings viewers independently produced films that showcase diverse people, places and the culture of our region. Circus Dreams Thursday, November 27, 10:00 pm The MPBN Community Films team caught up with Signe Taylor as she shared her thoughts on life under the Circus Smirkus big top. Do you think deep down that everybody dreams about running away and joining a circus? Did you? I think most kids who see a circus performance wonder about what it would be like to be in that ring, too. I know I did. I remember leaving Ringling shows dancing and doing “acrobatics” and dreaming about being one of the ladies in sequins twirling around on the ropes high in the air. I don’t know if circus speaks to everyone, but it did to me! Why did some of the individuals featured in the film join Circus Smirkus? First, it’s hard to get onto the Circus Smirkus tour. Hundreds of kids from around the world between the ages of 10 and 18 audition, and less than 30 are accepted. So anyone who makes the tour has put serious training time into perfecting their circus skills. Simply put, circus is their passion. Whether they love juggling, acrobatics, clowning or aerials, they joined Circus Smirkus because doing circus is what they love, and they work extremely hard to do it well. 8 Experience November 2014 Would you say that the majority of them found what they were seeking? I think Circus Smirkus is an amazing experience for every kid on tour. They are doing what they love, and they are surrounded by kids who share their passion. Plus, they get to perform in a real circus tent, backed by live musicians and a full tech crew, to audiences in the hundreds. As one of the jugglers said to me toward the end of the tour, “No one gives me a standing ovation for writing a paper at school. How could I not miss this?” What message or messages do you hope the viewer takes away when watching your documentary? One message that I knew I wanted to communicate from the get-go is that the world is a big place, and there is a place for you in it. From being a teacher, I saw how hard it was for kids who do not easily fit into traditional high school roles, so I really wanted to make a film that celebrates unconventional kids finding their tribe. Another strong message in the film is that pursuing your passion takes extraordinary dedication and hard work, but it’s worth it. I didn’t set out to capture this one – but it was part and parcel of every circus kid! Lastly, I wanted to feature circus because it’s athletic, artistic and collaborative – and I love how the kids work together to create joy and not to “win.” How would you describe your style of storytelling? Is this documentary indicative of your other work? Circus Dreams is an observational documentary. By shooting without a script and following the story as it develops, I think you give viewers an intimacy with the film participants that would be virtually impossible to replicate in any other art form. That intimacy is the power of the film. Viewers get to be immersed in the film participants’ world – and to witness people in the process of transformation. What I treasure most about the observational style is that it’s “real.” And making observational documentaries is my passion. What projects lie ahead for you? What’s a story that you have on your “bucket list” to tell? I am currently immersed in editing an observational documentary titled “Telling My Story.” It’s about a Dartmouth College class that takes students to a jail in Unity, New Hampshire, to work with incarcerated women to write and perform a play. In many ways, it’s very different from Circus Dreams. “Telling My Story” is being made for an adult audience, not a family one, and it features unsettling subject matter. No one goes to jail for happy reasons. But it is also similar to Circus Dreams in that it celebrates how the arts can heal, empower and help create community. Finally, if you could have joined Circus Smirkus, what performing role would you want to have played? I love this question! As a kid, I was very bendy and really enjoyed freaking my friends and family out by contorting my body into weird positions. So in an alternative universe, I would have been a contortionist. I’m not sure what this says about me, but I know I would have loved to do that! I MPBN Community Films Airing This Month! . On the Edge: Island Communities Make it a Maine Made holiday season!
