STAFF UPDATES Jon Richards Ethan Wing Please help us welcome our newest editions to the TRS team, Jon Richards and Ethan Wing. Jon is our new Supervising Recreation Specialist, upon Jessica Battaglia’s retirement. Jon is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and before joining our team, he was a Regional Sports Manager at Special Olympics, Executive Director and Program Director at Adaptive Sports and Recreation Association. He enjoys spending time with his wife and 18 month old daughter and competing in triathlons. You will find Ethan assisting at our many programs as our newest Recreation Leader II. He has a Masters in Recreation, Sport and Tourism and has been working in recreation for over 8 years running sports, aquatics and senior programming, as well as adaptive basketball and swim programs. Marisol Mendoza MAMendoza@sandiego.gov, (619) 236-7753 We are grateful for all of our wonderful volunteers who dedicate so much time and energy to help make our programs possible. Check out this quarter’s “Top Bananas,” exceptional volunteers who rise above and beyond their call of duty. Please congratulate them if you see them at programs. Point Loma Nazarene University Melinda Reyes and Brianna Winger Melinda and Briana first heard about TRS at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) through Agape Ministry, formerly known as Special Friends. Melinda volunteers because she loves helping out and meeting new people. Brianna loves volunteering because she says at the end of the day the participants she helped end up helping her more than she could ever help them. When they are not volunteering or studying, Melinda likes Polynesian dancing with her sister and Brianna enjoys the beach, reading, and eating ice cream. Melinda has plans to earn a Masters in Public Health and Brianna hopes to find a job in San Diego post graduation from PLNU. USS Ronald Reagan Volunteers The USS Ronald Reagan first contacted Therapeutic Recreation Services when they were out at sea and since their return in August they have volunteered at Tandem, Leisure Seekers, and have assisted in creating our dream craft room, logging in over 100 hours! The group decided to volunteer because they consider themselves a moving city with every talent known to man and they want to be a blessing to their new city as much as possible. They are a multicultural group with many interests and talents. The group enjoys traveling, hiking, fishing, helping others in need, painting, reading, shopping, working out, cooking and eating. 18 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Happy Birthday to all our volunteers with October, November, and December birthdays!
