I was able to spend some time with the student leaders elect
at Alexandra Headland recently. Joined by their counterparts
from Brisbane Boys’ College, our brother school, the camp
provided a good opportunity for the girls to begin the process of
developing leadership skills. Over the course of the retreat, the
girls were able to start setting goals and thinking deeply about
leaving a legacy. Thanks must go to Ms Elliott, Rev Yarrow, Ms
Shaw and Mrs Gibbs for facilitating this worthwhile experience.
Last week, I travelled to Townsville for the Isolated Children’s
Parents’ Association (ICPA) State Conference. For our boarder
families, this parent lobby group plays a vital role in ensuring that
geographically isolated students gain equitable access to a quality
education. The focus of the conference this year was to highlight the long term consequences
of the current drought on families and their ability to send their children to boarding school. The
conference provided an important platform for parents to voice their concerns and ideas, which
are then put before State government so that there is a collaborative approach to finding solutions.
I am looking forward to Speech Night; it is such a wonderful celebration of achievement and
success. Congratulations to all our Clayfield recipients on their outstanding commitment to
excellence.

Upcoming Events
When Jesus was asked what were the two greatest
commandments for those seeking to obey God he responded,
‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and
with all your mind. The second most important is, ‘Love others as
much as you love yourself.’
There are many who claim to love God and who are trying to live
faithful lives yet they don’t have concern for others. Sometimes
I think people can get so preoccupied with obeying God and
doing what they think God requires of them that they forget
that God is love. It is though these two commandments are
ranked and obeying God is more important than loving others.
There are some terrible things in history that have been perpetrated in the name of
obedience to God. We don’t have to look too far to see these happening even now.
Love for God and love for others are two sides of the same coin. They are not separable.
Loving others demonstrates our love for God. In 1 John 4:20 we are told ‘if we say we love God
and we don’t love each other, we are liars. We can’t see God. So how can we love God, if we don’t
love the people we can see? The commandment that God has given us is: ‘Love God and love
each other!”

Speech Night
I am really looking forward to celebrating the wonderful
achievements of our students tonight at Speech Night. This
evening will also showcase the outstanding musical talents of
a significant number of our students. I am constantly reminded
how fortunate we are as a College to have such amazing music
staff and instrumental teachers who continue to enrich our
students growth and talent in this dimension.
Due to the closure of the Convention Centre car park due to the
G20 Summit and the evening showing of the Lion King at QPAC
we are envisaging some parking ‘challenges’. We are asking that
parents please allow additional time to travel into QPAC and find
parking. QPAC has advised us that pre-paid parking at QPAC has now sold out; however, parking
is still available at the Brisbane Museum or Southbank Parklands (a short walk from QPAC). QPAC
recommend we utilise public transport, or arrange to car pool.
Habits of Highly Effective Students
A common issue felt by many students at this time of year is how to keep focussed in such a busy
term. Dr Stephen R Covey, renowned educator and author of the book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly
Effective People’ proposes there are habits people can develop to succeed in life. In fact, you can
also use his suggestions to help prepare yourself to succeed in your studies. Dr Covey suggests
that students try to develop and appreciate the following habits:

Take responsibility for yourself
Recognise that in order to succeed you need to make decisions about your priorities, your time and your resources.
Centre yourself on your values and principles
Don’t let friends and acquaintances dictate what you consider important.
Put first things first
Follow up on the priorities you have set for yourself and don’t let others, or other interests, distract you from your goals.
Discover your key productivity periods and places
Morning, afternoon, or evening? Find spaces where you can be the most focussed and productive. Prioritise these for your most difficult study challenges.
Consider yourself in a win-win situation
When you contribute your best to a class, you, your fellow students, and even your teacher will benefit. Your results can then be one additional check on your performance.

First understand others, then attempt to be understood
When you have an issue with another person, try to see it from their perspective. Now ask yourself how you can best approach the issue with that person given his/her situation.
Look for better solutions to problems
For example, if you don’t understand the course material, don’t just re-read it. Try something else. If you are not sure how, consult with the teacher, Head of Department, a classmate or form a study group.

This evening’s Speech Night is where we celebrate our students
who have achieved outstanding results in academic, sporting and
leadership endeavours. Junior Schooling award recipients would
have received information on the rehearsal arrangements and
family tickets for Speech Night at QPAC. We are looking forward
to celebrating with you.
Boys are encouraged to complete their schooling at Clayfield
College until the end of Year 5. In 2015 this will be to the end
of Year 6. With this new direction, Clayfield families have the
opportunity to keep their sons (with sibling daughters) at Clayfield
until the end of Year 6 before transitioning into Year 7 at the boys’
school of their choice. Such a move, ensures the opportunity for
siblings to support each other at school, offers ease of drop offs and pickups for Clayfield parents
and caregivers, and provides sustained access to our quality coeducational environment for the
primary years of schooling. Clayfield boys have priority transfer to our brother school – Brisbane
Boys College; however, a separate application must be made for this enrolment. A discount is
available for any other siblings attending a PMSA school.
Car Parking: Like most inner-city schools, parking at Clayfield College is limited.
Parents are requested to use the drop off and pick up areas on Circular Drive
for P-3 students and Bayview Terrace for Years 4-5 students. If circumstances
require that you need to personally come into the school grounds, parking will
need to be accessed in the streets surrounding the school. Staff car parks, the Main Oval or the
Outside Hours School Care car park are not available for parent parking.

Boys Soccer Roar Skills Sessions start this Friday 31 October from 1:30-2:30pm. These skills
sessions will run for 4 weeks where the boys will be given the opportunity to hone their soccer
skills under the watchful eye of trained coaches.
Kind Kids Give! - Our Year Two and Prep mother, Juliette
Wright, launched a new website this week! GIVIT Kids
www.givitkids.org.au will enable children to give safely
and anonymously to impoverished, disadvantaged and
marginalised members of their community in a fun and
engaging way. The website aims to reduce the growing
number of children living in poverty, by developing
a philanthropic culture in young Queenslanders who
provide assistance to others in need through the donation of material items.

On the GIVIT Kids List, registered charities request urgently required items such as school
uniforms, books, clothes, personal items, care packs, sports and musical equipment. Children
will be able to view the list and, with their parents approval, give the item to the family in need.
Note - The initiative is supported by DETE, and will be integrated into Years 3, 5 and 6 Australian
Civics and Citizenship Curriculum. Lesson plans, videos and animations have been developed to
assist teachers in engaging students with their community, encouraging tolerance and empathy,
helping develop research and fundraising skills as well build lasting connections within their
local community.

Cybersafety and Social Networking Sites
This week in Year 6 and Year 9 Personal Development sessions,
Brett Lee from INESS has cautioned students about their online
activity. I thought it timely to provide a list of sites that children
could be accessing.
Ask.fm – Age requirement 13+
This is a social networking site where users ask each other
questions with the option of anonymity. The combination
of anonymity, an aspect that appears to raise the level of
disinhibition, and the fact that both questions and answers can
be viewed by anyone, means that the potential for bullying
behaviour is very high.
Instagram – Age requirement 13
Instagram is an online photo/video-sharing site. Users can choose specific privacy settings that
allow others to use GPS technology to determine locations where photos were taken. If younger
children are accessing this site it is recommended that full privacy settings are enabled. These
may not be the default settings.

KIK – Age restrictions 17 +
KIK is a free messaging app with a significant history of causing problems for school age children.
The site has had international police attention due to predatory behaviour associated with usage.
Omegle – Age restrictions 17+
Omegle is a free online chat website that randomly pairs users allowing them to communicate
with strangers in an anonymous 1-1 chat session without registering. It also allows users to see
photos and videos – the content is often highly explicit.
Popcorn chat – No specified age restrictions
The site allows users to privately chat with people within a 1.6km radius. The purpose is to allow
users to know who is in close proximity to them.
Qooh.me – Age restrictions 13+
Qooh.me is a social site that allows people to ask questions of users, again with an anonymous
profile.
Spring.me – Age requirement 13+
Spring me was originally known as Formspring. This site also allows chatting and commentary
and has been linked with several high profile bullying cases overseas.
Snapchat – Age restriction – 13+
Snapchat is a photo-messaging app which allows users to take photos, send messages, record
videos, add text and drawings and send them to a controlled group of recipients. The image is
displayed for a certain period of time that indicates it is only temporary; however, it is quite simple
to screen shot and retrieve images. Snapchat can be a fun and harmless way to share photos
but it becomes dangerous when children believe the images are fleeting and experiment with
inappropriate pictures.
Tinder – Age restriction 17+
This is a matchmaking site that uses Facebook profiles to provide information others may wish
to view. GPS allows users to set a radius within which to search. Matches are made on the basis
of appearance. The site was implicated in the death of a teenager in Queensland. Demonstrating
the dangers of the site, Brett Lee of INESS has shown that he can connect with boys and girls as
young as 13 within minutes by pretending to be a young girl.
Tumblr – Age restrictions 13+
Tumblr is a blogging site that allows you to post, comment and share your thoughts about
anything that interests you. It encourages users to connect and follow people to see what they
are commenting on. While this can be a positive way for people with similar interests to connect
and share ideas it can become harmful when these thoughts are not age appropriate or positive.
The Queensland government website, Cybersmart, provides information and safety tips for
children and parents.

Prestige Music Fest
Congratulations to Percussion Ensemble, Wind Orchestra, Vivo Strings, Corelli Strings, Paganini
Strings and Viotti Strings who all achieved a Gold Award at the Prestige Music Competition.
These students work towards this from the very beginning of the year. In order to achieve
this level of award the students need to perform to a very high standard. This is a wonderful
achievement.
All the best to Wind Ensemble and Stage Band for their upcoming performances.
Middle Schooling Music Celebration Afternoon
The Middle Schooling Music students are invited to celebrate a fantastic year of music at the
celebration afternoon. This is taking place on Tuesday 4 November 3.15-5pm on the College
Oval. Please RSVP to this event on the Music Staffroom Noticeboard to ensure that you receive
your Certificate and Sausage Sizzle. Students can change into appropriate free dress with closed
in shoes after the bell.

Study a foreign language during the holidays
Students in Years 11 and 12 in 2015 can study enrichment language courses in French, German,
Japanese, Spanish and Chinese (Mandarin) at the University of Queensland’s Institute of Modern
Languages from 12 – 16 January 2015. These courses are suitable for students who wish to
enrich their knowledge of the language and culture they are currently studying and practise

UQ College now at St Lucia campus
UQ College has relocated its programs to the University of Queensland’s (UQ) St Lucia campus.
This College provides alternate pathways to university study. The programs offered include:
• Tertiary Preparation Program – This currently free program is delivered over 28 weeks and is offered in January, May and September. It builds confidence, helps students gain tertiary study skills and provides a QTAC rank for entry into UQ’s degree programs. Apply directly to UQ College for this program. Applications are now open for the January 2015 intake.
• Associate Degree in Business – This is a 16-month program. Successful completion provides an option to pursue entry to UQ’s B Business Management with credit. Apply through QTAC for this program (see p. 106 of the QTAC Guide).
• Mathematics B, Chemistry and Biology bridging programs – These intensive, full-
fee courses are offered from 25 November – 20 December 2014. Applications are now open. Successful completion will meet the subject prerequisites in these subjects for UQ degrees. Results will be available in time to be used in the QTAC January 2015 major offer round.
Receiving your Year 12 results
Year 12 students will receive their Senior Education Profile (SEP) from the Queensland Curriculum
and Assessment Authority (QCAA) in the mail from Monday 22 December 2014. The Senior
Education Profile will be made up of one or more of the following documents (depending on
your eligibility).
• Queensland Certificate of Education
• Tertiary Entrance Statement (OP and FPs)
• Senior Statement
• Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement.
All results contributing to the Queensland Certificate of Education and OPs and FPs will be
available in your Learning Account on the Student Connect website at https://studentconnect.
qsa.qld.edu.au from 9 am on Saturday 20 December 2014. You need your Learner Unique
Identifier (LUI) and password (initially the day and month of birth) to log in and check your
results. You will be able to access your results more quickly if you have previously accessed

QTAC offer rounds November 2014 – February 2015
QTAC offers places in courses on specific dates. These are called ‘Offer rounds’. The offer round
dates between November 2014 and February 2015 are:
•
27 November 2014 - Early offer round – offers may be made for some courses that have their major offer round on 15 January 2015. The offers will be made to applicants who have met the entry requirements (e.g. subject prerequisites) and already have a qualification (e.g. AMEB seventh or eighth grade; previous tertiary study)
•
11 December 2014 - Major offer round for many Semester 1 2015 creative and performing arts courses. See page 6 of the QTAC Guide for a list of courses offered at this time
•
15 January 2015 - Major offer round for most Semester 1 2015 courses
•
5 February 2015 – Subsequent offer round for Semester 1 2015 courses with vacancies.
QTAC will notify you by email if you have received an offer. Also you can find out if you have an
offer by accessing your application via QTAC’s Current Applicant online service. Once you have
received an offer you must respond to QTAC (usually within seven days). Failure to do this could
mean you forfeit your offer and that your application becomes inactive.

QG Softball
The Year 8 – 10 softball teams participated in the first day of competition last Thursday. All teams
secured at least one win, with the 10A team finishing the day with 3 wins from 3. Well done
ladies.

17 November. Ticket order forms are attached to this newsletter and payment can be made via
the College website on-line payment system. The cost is $40 per person, theme is Masquerade.

Cardio Room Access and Fun in Fitness Sessions at Clayfield
All students are reminded that the Cardio room is open and supervised on Friday mornings from
7- 8am for all students to access. Fun in Fitness sessions are also offered to all Clayfield students
on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7 – 8am. Get active, healthy body, healthy mind!

The Clayfield College P&F Art Show needs members for the committee in 2015 and helpers for
the opening night on Friday 29 May 2015.
We showcase local, emerging and mid-career artists in painting, sculpture and jewellery.

Following an outstanding career including 8 dedicated years as Principal
of Clayfield College, Mr Brian Savins retires at the end of 2014. The Parents
and Friends Association will be farewelling Mr Savins on the evening of 11
November at the Pool Centre following our P&F AGM at 7pm. The P&F invites all
parents and carers of Clayfield College to join with us in farewelling Mr Savins.
The AGM will be followed by Thank You Drinks and Nibbles to acknowledge the many members
of the school community who have assisted the P&F throughout the year. A special note of
thanks goes to Year 12 parents for their years of support. This will also be a special opportunity to
farewell Mr Brian Savins as he retires at the end of 2014.
Please RSVP for the thank you drinks to the Secretary of the P&F (details below) by 5pm on
Monday 3 November 2014.

As we approach the end of another year we would like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers
for giving up their time to assist us in the shop. The P&F Association are hosting a thank you
morning tea on Friday 21st November from 9.00am to 10.30am at the Boarding House. We would
