The Hidden Place
Ten Boy Scouts from Troop 98,
including Red River scouts Cade
Featherston and Ross Foley, spent
the weekend fixing up the “The
Hidden Picnic Place”.
Built by Red River volunteers
and National Forest staff in 1978,
the area needed some TLC. Located 200 yards up Goose Lake Road
past the river crossing, it provides
an idyllic place for families to picnic, pan for gold in Placer Creek,
and just enjoy the beautiful setting
-Courtesy Eddie Dry
Hosts Still Needed
According to Don and Kay
Wendell, who are the volunteer
coordinators for Red River Ski
Area host program, the recruitment of hosts for the upcoming
ski season has gone well, but a
few more volunteers are still
and
Pieces

10 days of service will receive a
season pass. For less than 10
days, lift tickets will be provided.

Dr. Neal
Everett Neal Holden passed
away on October 22, 2014. Born
on May 29, 1925 in Beggs, Oklahoma, he was husband, father,
brother, uncle, mentor and a
friend.
Mary Nell Westmoreland Holden, his wife of 68 years, survives
him.
He served his country in the
Battle of the Bulge of World
War II. He served his church as
deacon for over 50 years, taught
high school boys and married
young adults for many years.
Dr. Holden was a family physician and surgeon from 1953 to
1994. At a time when most physicians’ offices were located close
to downtown hospitals, Dr. Holden was a pioneer and opened his
office near families in a shopping
center in northeast Oklahoma
City. He served on the board of
Deaconess Hospital for many
years and was one of the first doctors to practice at Baptist Hospital. He held many leadership positions at both institutions, as well
as in the medical society. “Doc”
treated many sprained ankles as
team physician for Northwest
Classen and Putnam City high
schools during the 1960s and
1970s.
He loved spending time in
Red River and was an active patron of town history and supporter of the Red River Historical Society.
Editor’s Note: Dr. Holden will be
featured in Alyce’s “Headin’
West” column in the next edition
of the Red River Miner.

Meet Sarah D At The RRSA
She wears many “hats” - photographer, copywriter, creator of digital
files - and you’ve probably seen her work. She loves that work.
Sarah Dorrance is the Marketing Coordinator at the Red River Ski
Area RRSA. Her duties include being in charge of social media marketing (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube), setting up radio trade
advertising and “I help Karen Kelly with anything she needs done.”
She also “makes sure all events go smoothly, I promote them.”
Originally from Darien, Connecticut, she studied photography at
Colby Sawyer college in New London NH, a town she says is very
similar to Red River. She moved to town in 2007. “I guess I know what
I like.”
Her parents actually met in Red River in the 1970s. Her mom was
from Georgia and her dad from Connecticut. Both taught skiing at
RRSA and both worked at Texas Reds Steakhouse. Red River is more
than just a town for Sarah
“Upon graduating from college I had no idea what to do with myself.
My dad was good friends with Drew Judycki so he called and said ‘Hey,
Sara wants to come teach skiing.’ So that’s what I did!”
When she moved to town she began her free-lance photog biz S.C.
Parrish Photography, now in its 8th year.
“I’m an on-location photog, no studio, I like to utilize natural light
whenever possible, and I like candid moments. I don’t like set-up poseyposey things. I like natural interactions between people.
“I’ll take pictures of food, scenery, people (portraits, engagements, senior photos, weddings) – whatever I can photograph, I will.”

chamber chat
In this day of texting, instant
messaging, social media, and Instagram, a new language has
emerged to help with the thumb
action and “the need for speed” to
communicate. For instance:
Asap u sb oyw 2 rr. Pic sno and
ppl swl & ling adip. Sys
“As soon as possible you should
be on your way to Red River. Picture snow and people screaming
with laughter and loving another
day in paradise. See you soon.”
*s* wru wayf wdyk wysiwyg
“Smile. Where are you? Where
are you from? What do you know?
What you see is what you get.”
Whatever the language, it’s
definitely time to start making
winter vacation plans. The Red
River Ski Area is busily making
snow. Merchants are stocking
shelves with new winter merchandise. The gold and yellow leaves
on the aspen trees are almost gone.
Temperatures are below 32 degrees at night. Phone calls about
lodging availability for Christmas
are increasing. Plans for the OldFashioned New Year’s Party, Winter Carnival and Mardi Gras in the
Mountains are being made.
Winter is definitely waiting
around the corner in Red River.
Snow is predicted. More and more
winter clothing and boots are being moved to the front of the closets. The children are wearing their
toboggans to school and to play
after school. Shotgun Willie’s and
Mountain Treasures are making
soups each day to serve their
guests.
Aytmtb – “and you are telling
me this because?”
The business owners, merchants, restaurants and locals are
anxiously awaiting the first big
snow because we all love the
snow! It’s a symbol of a new season, new guests, new adventures
and new friends! This is Carrie
and my second winter in Red
River. From the Chamber office
we can see Brandenburg Park, the
snow, the dogs playing in the
snow, the snowmen, the snowball
fights and did I mention the
snow.

Non-Functioning
Government... Malicious Talk... Case of
the Grandeurs... Gives one pause
to think? If you ask me, we all
ought to start thinking.
Thinking about why our government has been called “nonfunctioning.” And how it could be
fixed. Number One, I believe,
would be Campaign Finance Reform. Some years ago, there was
quite a to-do about campaign finance reform. An elder in her 80s
walked across the country for reform.
Then it died down, as these
things often do, without anything
happening, except for several decent Democrats in Congress, who
have since resigned, urgently calling for it.
Imagine... Come on, just imagine, what would happen to federal
elections of president and congresspeople, if every citizen capable of writing in the United
States of America, would write
his-her congressperson Demanding Campaign Finance Reform.
With just an allotted amount of
funding taken from taxes, each
candidate would be on an equal
level. And some middle class citi-
5
zen with a great mind and the
heart of a statesman-woman could
be elected to Congress. Corruption could be cut to a minimum
with congress people no longer
beholden to Big Business or to
anything or anyone else. Except
their constituents and their conscience.
And congress people could
concentrate on the business they
were elected for – filling the needs
of the country and ALL its people.
And keeping us out of senseless
wars. And making sure our elders
and children are taken care of.
And becoming more Like George
Washington, Father of our Country, and Abraham Lincoln and
Thomas Jefferson and Franklin
Delano Roosevelt.
You think one citizen cannot do
anything? That’s why you don’t
bother to vote anymore? Start that
letter-writing campaign and see
what happens! Those guys in Congress with the big case of the
grandeurs will do a turnabout in a
hurry. They may even become
humane. Or be outed.
Thirty-some years ago, my
husband wrote a letter to New
Mexico newspapers, calling for
liquor law reform and beer-wine
licensing for small business restaurateurs -and got it! (Although
everyone said it wouldn’t happen.)
Malicious talk is always nonproductive and extremely hurtful
on any level, country-wide or
right here on Main Street. When
my family moved here in 1975
from Wisconsin, some idiot
started a rumor that we were
covering for the Mafia. Dear old
Gene Addison, running a lodge
next door, came over that fall as
my husband was laying the
groundwork for our theater.
Point blank, no-nonsense Addison asked my husband about the
Mafia rumor. “Do you think I’d
be working this blank-blank hard
if I had the Mafia behind me?”
my husband fired back. “I see
your point,” said Gene. The two
shook hands and became
friends.
Malicious talk – senseless gossip – hurts. What someone surmises about another may be so
vastly far from truth that you will
cringe in shame for repeating it.
There is entirely too much malicious talk around the coffee mugs
and the teapots and bars.
The way for a country, a city, a
citizen, to be strong is the freeflowing of ideas, dreams, thoughts
– an honoring of those ideas,
dreams and thoughts. You don’t
have to agree with Me and I don’t
have to agree with You but we
should, and must, honor your right
and my right to express ourselves
freely. Above all, we ought to
Think – and Ponder – before we
Speak. And to those of you who
are doing your altruistic best for
your country, your state, your city,
and especially Red River Valley,
high up (8750 altitude) in the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains of
New Mexico – Believe Me, I Salute You.
