Eagles fall to Panthers 33-22 on Senior Night
By NEIL GRANT
sportsdesk@octimesnews.com
Though cold and rainy
weather may have kept
the crowd size down,
those in attendance saw
a competitive football
game last Friday night,
with visiting Daviess
County downing the
host Ohio County Eagles by a final of 33-22. Friday’s loss ended Ohio
County’s season at 0-10
while Daviess County
carries a 4-6 mark into
this Friday’s first round
of the 6A state playoffs
against Louisville St.
Xavier.
Friday’s game summary: Ohio County had
possession of the ball
almost twice as much in
Friday’s contest, but often saw long drives come
up short. Daviess County scored four times in
the first half—twice on
“big plays”—and held
off the late-charging Eagles.
To wit: the Eagles’
first possession included 15 plays and picked
up four first downs, but
ended at the Daviess
County 25. OCHS’ defense threw Panther
quarterback
Adam
Bouchard for a six-yard
loss on Daviess County’s
first play, then gave up
an 81-yard touchdown
run to Samuel Spiceson. Austin Vanover’s
point-after kick put the
visitors up 7-0 with 5:08
left in the first period.
Ohio County’s next
series only lasted two
plays, however, as Eagle
quarterback Nate Morris lost control of the ball
on an apparent pass attempt. To many (admittedly biased) Eagle fans,
the play looked like an
incomplete pass but was
ruled a fumble with the
Panthers recovering at
OCHS’ 14. Bouchard
ran for nine yards on
first down, then handed off to Spiceson who
carried the pigskin into
the end zone. Another
Vanover PAT kick gave
the Panthers a 14-0 advantage with 3:45 to go
in the first period.
The Eagles’ next series ended on downs,
with a fourth-down
run coming up literally
inches short of a first
down at the OCHS 46. Daviess County struck
quickly, as Bouchard hit
end Darrius Jones on
a scoring pass on first
down. Vanover’s PAT
kick upped DCHS’ lead
to 21-0 with still 1:58
left in the initial period.
But after that shaky
start, Ohio County actually outplayed their
guests (in this writer’s
humble opinion). Ohio
County finally got on
the scoreboard with 3:23
to play until halftime
when Morris connected with slotback Brice
Phelps on an 11-yard
pass play. That play
capped a 16-play series
covering 69 yards. Seth
Jacob Frady blocks for Brice Phelps as he cuts inside playing Daviess County last Friday.
Stevens’ PAT kick attempt was blocked, leaving the home team down
21-6. Daviess County answered that score before
halftime, however, with
Spiceson scoring from
a yard out to cap a 57yard Panther possession
in seven plays. Running
back Chase Lecroy has
39 of those yards with
Spiceson gaining the
rest. Vanover’s PAT try
failed, leaving Daviess
County with a 27-6 lead
at halftime.
At the half, the Panthers held a 197-154
edge in total offense,
though Ohio County had
13 first downs to DCHS’
four. Each team was
penalized five times for
about 40 yards.
The score was still
27-6 as the third quarter wound down, but
Daviess County would
change that in the final
seconds. Spiceson had
three runs totaling 15
yards in a series that
started at the Eagle 45,
and was aided by an
Ohio County offsides
penalty. After a nineyard carry by Bouchard,
the Panther quarter-
back found Lecroy slipping out of the backfield
and hit him with a 16yard scoring pass. A
pass for the PAT failed,
leaving Daviess County
on top 33-6 with :31.1
left in the third period.
Ohio County cut the
Panther lead to 33-14
with 7:59 left in the
Eagles ...pg. 2-B.

season.
Of his senior group,
Eagle head coach Jody
Ashby said, “We appreciate the commitment
and effort that our six
seniors put into this
season and throughout
their high school careers. When we start
winning here, everyone
can look back to this
group, they built the
foundation.”
Six Ohio County High

final game of the season

by former OCHS players
representing the six decades of Eagle football.

33-22.
Final game statistics
showed Ohio County
with a slim 315-311 edge
in total offense, with the
Panthers gaining 246 on
the ground to the Eagles’
199. Spiceson was the
game’s leading rusher
with 187 yards on 12
carries while Morris had
121 on 25 attempts for
Ohio County and Phelps
82 on 16. Morris made
good on 15 of 49 passing
attempts for 120 yards,
while Bouchard completed three of eight for 65. Phelps had five catches
for 50 yards for the Eagles with Jones’ two receptions totaling 49 for
DCHS.
Ohio County had 21
first downs on the night
to Daviess County’s
eight. The visitors were
penalized a dozen times
for 108 yards while the
home team was flagged
10 times for 83.
Defensively, Miller led
Ohio County with eight
tackles while Shaffer
had seven, Brown six,
and Phelps and linebacker Alex Hunt five
each. Burgess and Morris were in on four stops
with Colbren Inglis and
Treyez Saulsberry each
adding three. Shaffer,
Brown, and Miller also
each had fumble recoveries.
In assessing Friday’s
game, OCHS head coach
Jody Ashby commented,
“The first six minutes
went according to plan,
with the exception of
not finishing the drive
and with points on the
board. From that point
on, we had a number of
positive plays, but made
too many mistakes...
Despite some of the mistakes, such as the uncharacteristic drops by
receivers, we are a significantly better football
team than we were in
week one...We appreciate the commitment and
effort that our six seniors
put into this season and
throughout their high
school careers. When
we start winning here,
everyone can look back
to this group, they built
the foundation.”
Looking to the future,
Ashby said, “We will
evaluate every aspect of
our program and make
decisions that are in
the best interest of the
program. We increased
our numbers this year
by nearly fifty percent,
and we’ll at least try
for that kind of increase
next year. In addition
to adding more players
to the roster, we have
to continue to develop the players that we
have. Likewise, every
member of our coaching
staff must have a great
off-season of professional development.”

Three Lady Eagles on All-region team
By NEIL GRANT

Three Ohio County
High School Lady Eagles were named to the
2014 Girls’ All-Third
Region Soccer Team by
a vote of the region’s
coaches. Seniors Brooklyn Kassinger and Tate
Parker were first team

junior Katie Mason
earned
second-team
status. The three
helped lead Chuck Ad-
ams’ team to a final 117-2 record, a 10th District championship, and
semifinal finish in last
week’s regional tournament.
According to Adams, coaches nominated players from their
squad for all-regional
recognition, then voted for the top 22 players, but could not vote
for their own players. The top vote-getter—
Owensboro Catholic’s
Annabel
Moore—was
named the region’s
“Player of the Year”,
with the next 11 players being named all-region first team and the
final 11 second-team
members.
Kassinger led the
OCHS girls’ in scoring this season with 22
goals—finishing third
in the region in that category, and dishing out
eight assists. Parker,
coming off a knee injury late last season that
required surgery, had a
strong senior campaign

Ambere Barnett, Sarah
Haleman, and Caroline
Hayden; Daviess County’s Natalie Hinchcliffe,

led the Bruins to the
regional title. Next
came Grayson County 48, North Hardin
