From the Pastor’s Desk
As we approach the end of the liturgical year, we
draw our attention to the last things that await beyond
the grave. The great feasts of All Saints and All Souls
commemorate our beloved dead, but they also remind us
of the finiteness of our worldly existence and the eternal
judgment in the spiritual realm. In the Northern Hemisphere, we have a vivid expression of decay and corruption all around us as the natural world sheds its colorful
raiment, leaving the barren and landscape of winter.
In the statements below, we have a refining of a life
devoted to Christ into one statement which summarizes
what was most important to each of these saints in the
hour of victory, as each passed through the veil into the
presence of God. We would do well to profit from this
wisdom so that we might also emulate it–before the bell
tolls for our own passing.
St. Andrew (Martyr)
Lord, eternal King of glory, receive me hanging from
the wood of this sweet cross. Thou who art my God,
whom I have seen, do not permit them to loosen me from
the cross. Do this for me, O Lord, for I know the virtue
of Thy Holy Cross.
St. Augustine
Your will be done. Come, Lord Jesus!
Bl. Bartholomew Longo
My only desire is to see Mary who saved me and who
will save me from the clutches of Satan.
St. Bernadette Sourbirous
Holy Mary, pray for me, a poor sinner.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Be children of the Church.
St. Jean Baptiste de la Salle
In all things I adore the will of God in my regard.
St. Joan of Arc (Martyr)
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!
St. John Chrysostom
Glory to God for all things!
St. John Paul II
Let me go to the house of the Father.
Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha
Jesus, I love you.
Bl. Miguel Pro, S.J. (Martyr)
Long live Christ the King!
St. Perpetua (Martyr)
Stand fast in the faith and love one another.
St. Teresa of Ávila
My Lord, it is time to move on. May Your will be done
always and forever. O my Lord and my Spouse, the hour
that I have longed for has come. It is time for us to meet
one another.
Bl. Teresa of Calcutta
Jesus, I love you. Jesus, I love you.
St. Thomas More (Martyr)
I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first!

Dedication of
St. John Lateran
Veterans Day / November 11th
Feast:
November 9th
Most Catholics think of St.
Peter’s as the pope’s main church, but they are wrong.
St. John Lateran is the pope’s church, the cathedral of the
Diocese of Rome where the Bishop of Rome presides.
God Bless Our Troops
November 11, or what has come to be known as Veterans Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to
honor Armistice Day - the end of World War I, which
officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislature that was passed in 1938, November 11 was
"dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.' As such,
this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.
In 1954, after having been through both World War II
and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the
Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and
inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this
legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day
to honor American veterans of all wars.
In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day
weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under
this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the last Monday of
October. Many states did not agree with this decision and
continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date.
The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed
with much confusion on October 25, 1971.
Finally on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R.
Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance
of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday
has been observed on November 11.
If any Parishioner has a relative in the Armed
Forces please let us know. Call, or stop by the Rectory, and tell us the name, the branch of Armed Service
and, if possible, where they are serving. We would
like to display their names near the American Flag in
Church so as to be remembered in prayer.
The first basilica on the site was built in the fourth
century when Constantine donated land he had received
from the wealthy Lateran family. That structure and its
successors suffered fire, earthquake and the ravages of
war, but the Lateran remained the church where popes
were consecrated until the popes returned from Avignon
in the 14th century to find the church and the adjoining
palace in ruins.
Pope Innocent X commissioned the present structure
in 1646. One of Rome’s most imposing churches, the
Lateran’s towering facade is crowned with 15 colossal
statues of Christ, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist
and 12 doctors of the Church. Beneath its high altar rest
the remains of the small wooden table on which tradition
holds St. Peter himself celebrated Mass.
Unlike the commemorations of other Roman churches
(St. Mary Major, August 5; Sts. Peter and Paul, November 18), this anniversary is a feast. The dedication of a
church is a feast for all its parishioners. In a sense, St.
John Lateran is the parish church of all Catholics, because it is the pope's cathedral. This church is the spiritual home of the people who are the Church.
"What was done here, as these walls were rising, is
reproduced when we bring together those who believe in
Christ. For, by believing they are hewn out, as it were,
from mountains and forests, like stones and timber; but
by catechizing, baptism and instruction they are, as it
were, shaped, squared and planed by the hands of the
workers and artisans. Nevertheless, they do not make a
house for the Lord until they are fitted together through
love" (St. Augustine).
Holy Name News
The next meeting of the Holy Name
Society will take place on Tuesday evening, November 11th. The meeting begins at 7:00PM with Novena in the
church. Following novena, we will have a guest speaker
for the evening, Deputy Chief Daniel Parrillo from the
Johnston Police Department. All members are encouraged to attend in support of our society and guest.

"The life of a family is filled with beautiful moments:
rest, meals together, walks in the park or the countryside, visits to grandparents or to a sick person… But if
love is missing, joy is missing, nothing is fun. Jesus gives
always gives us that love: he is its endless source. In the
sacrament he gives us his word and he gives us the
bread of life, so that our joy may be complete."
Pope Francis

THE DEDICATION OF TH E LATERAN BASILICA
A Note from the Principal
On behalf of the St. Rocco School, I would like to thank the
parent volunteers of our Cheerleading and all our Basketball
Teams. Thank you for volunteering your time to provide practices, coordinate game schedules, etc. and especially your
commitment to the students. Without your assistance, improved skills, great memories and experiences would not be
possible. Parents: Help us make athletics a positive experience
for your child keeping these strategies in mind: Keep games in
perspective. At any age, sports should be about having fun
and developing skills. Ask about the favorite part of the practice or the most interesting play in the game rather than focusing on your child’s performance or the score. Encourage
your child to set goals, but make sure the goals are realistic.
Avoid comments regarding your child's size or body.
Concentrate on the friends they are making, the places they
are playing and the effort they are putting forth.

3 or 5 Full Day Program
This week our teachers joined our surrounding Regional IV
schools for a Professional Development Symposium. It was
held at Mercymount Country Day School on Tuesday, November 4th. Best instructional practices, as well as grade/subject
lesson plan sharing filled the day's schedule. In addition, professional learning breakout sessions were offered. Areas such
as integrating technology, math, and writing were highlighted
along with guest speakers. All of the teachers were afforded
an opportunity to share their abundance of wisdom and experience new innovations. It was a successful day, which enlightened our teachers and built new professional relationships.
Mrs. Sweeney and her 1st grade class led the All
Saints Day Mass on Friday, November 7th. The
children processed into the church dressed as
saints as well as reciting the Mass readings. Additionally, each child wrote a short report about his/her saint.
This has become such a special tradition for our first graders
and a chance for them to shine as our “little saints”! Parents,
family and friends were thrilled to attend this Mass and see
the children take such pride in their efforts! The students did
a wonderful job leading the All Saints’ Day Mass for our
school and a special thank you to Mrs. Sweeney for her hard
work in preparing the students for this special Mass.
8:25 am to 2:25 pm
St. Rocco School nurtures a love for the Catholic faith and
encourages students to be lifelong learners.

This was also a special week – National Vocations Week. On
Friday, we had the privilege of receiving a visit from Our Lady
of Providence Seminarians. The seminarians spoke about vocations to our boys in grades 5-8. The boys enjoyed the assembly and asked many great questions. We may one day be
blessed by having a St. Rocco School student enter the Seminary!
