MISSION STATEMENT OF THE ST. MICHAEL FAITH COMMUNITY Extending a rich parish heritage built upon the pioneering traditions of the first settlers of the Southern Allegheny mountains, St. Michael the Archangel Parish embraces as its mission the use of all available resources, both spiritual and temporal, to minister to the needs of the people of Hollidaysburg and its surrounding areas. We do this in a fashion which reflects the teachings and example of Jesus Christ, while promoting a tradition of liturgical excellence, strong support for Catholic education in all its varieties, and enlightened social outreach to the community at large, in union with both the Diocesan and Universal Church. LITURGICAL REFLECTION… This year All Souls’ Day falls on a Sunday. Catholics traditionally pray for their dead that they find mercy and peace with God. In the earthly liturgy we take part in a foretaste of that heavenly liturgy celebrated in the holy city of Jerusalem. At Mass we sing a hymn to the Lord’s glory with the whole company of heaven, venerating the memory of the saints and hoping for some part and fellowship with them. The liturgy is the source for achieving in the most effective way possible human sanctification. We pray that our dead be with God in heaven. Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Numbers 8 and 10. 2014, Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, Liturgy Office, 925 South Logan Boulevard, Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania 16648. VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK November 2 - 8, 2014 National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations. NVAW began in 1976 when the U. S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for NVAW. In 1997, this celebration was moved to coincide with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which falls on January 13 in 2013. Beginning in 2014, NVAW was moved to the first full week of November. (Reprinted from: USCCB.org) Please say this prayer each day this week for vocations: Gracious God, your Son Jesus told us to ask you to send laborers into your harvest. Confident in your love, we ask you to bless your Church with priests and religious who are committed to making your love present wherever they are. We pray for all those who are seeking to know what you ask of them. Give them the light and the courage they need to know and follow your will. For our part, we pledge to be supportive of those we know and those in our families who seek to follow you in a priestly or religious vocation. Hear our prayer which we offer to you in the name of Jesus. Amen. Thanksgiving Food Drive and Christmas Gift Drive Food Drive Assistance ____ Gift Drive Assistance ____ Family Name: ________________________ Submitted By: _____________________ Phone #: ____________________________ Phone #: _________________________ PRAYING FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. From the beginning, the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the eternally happy vision of God in heaven. The Church also commends almsgiving and works of penance on behalf of the dead. Our prayer for the dead is capable of not only helping them but also of making their intercession for us effective. The Church on earth is united with the Church in Purgatory and with the Church in heaven (Source: The Catechism of the Catholic Church). The Christian faithful who make an offering so that the Mass may be applied for their intention, like the repose of the soul of a family, contribute to the good of the Church and by their offering take part in the concern of the Church for the support of its ministers and works (Source: Code of Canon Law). Though not obligatory, the usual Mass offering within the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown is $10.00. FAMILIES AND THE GOSPEL November 2 Jn 6: 37-40 - Our loved ones, who have stepped through the door of death, are now at rest, free of all burdens. In going home to the Lord they brought their love and concern for us with them. Death cannot totally separate families; our love binds us together forever. GETTING THROUGH GRIEF WITH GOD At some point in our lives, we all encounter grief, loss, and heartbreak. For some it may be the death of an aged parent whose long and full life is cause for celebration even in the midst of sadness. For others it may be the sudden or tragic death of a child or spouse, taken too soon and without warning. Every loss is significant for the one left facing the gaping void, the empty space where a loved one used to be. Regardless of the circumstances or context or season of life, we all grieve in the face of death, even if we don’t show it outwardly. We need to grieve, and the best way to do that is through our reliance on God and with the support of those people closest to us. Part of the reason grief is such a difficult path to walk today is because our society doesn’t handle death well. Unlike other cultures or even our own culture centuries ago, death and grief have been whitewashed. We want to pretend death doesn’t exist, and push down grief when it rears its head. But that’s unhealthy. The truth is that grief is natural and necessary and an integral part of healing and wholeness, and it’s not something you “get over” in the three days allotted for a wake and funeral. It is a long, slow process, one that can bring unexpected graces if we are willing to open ourselves up to the possibility that God is at work in our lives, even—or maybe especially—in our suffering and sorrow. Although it can be difficult to recognize that reality when we are in the throes of immediate grief, that’s where our faith comes in. The beliefs we have professed—in eternal life, in heaven, in salvation through Jesus Christ—will shore us up until we are able to steady ourselves emotionally and spiritually, and even after we do, our faith can provide a foundation of hope as we attempt to move forward. “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in Me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” - John 11:26 Christopher News Notes, 5 Hanover Square, New York, NY 10004 HEALING MASS There will be a Healing Mass on Monday, Nov. 24 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament - Altoona. Fr. Bill Kiel, from the Diocese of Greensburg, will be the main celebrant. All are welcome, especially those in need of physical, emotional, or spiritual healing, and those who support and care for them as well. For more information, call 814941-3832. FAITH FORMATION OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES The Family Life Office is hosting a special workshop THIS Friday, Nov. 7 (12:30 - 3:30p.m.) and on Sat.
