det är Sparbanken Rekarne. Där har inte ledningen

EUROPEAN ATHLETICS
PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
MESSAGE
We are delighted to be in Eskilstuna for
the 23rd edition of the European Athletics
Junior Championships as Sweden hosts
the event for the first time.
moved on from these championships to
glittering success at the European Athletics
Championships, World Championships
and Olympic Games at senior level.
Eskilstuna and the Ekängen Arena are
an excellent choice for Europe’s new
generation of emerging stars to show
case their talent in front of enthusiatic
fans. With the organisation of these
European Junior Championships, Eskils
tuna demonstrates its renewed commit
ment to sport as the city is in the process
of completing a new swimming arena as
well as another multisports hall.
If you look back at some of the past gold
medallists from recent championships,
you will come across names such as
Yelena Isinbayeva, Mo Farah, Christophe
Lemaitre, Carolina Klüft and many more.
This just underlines how important a role
these championships have played in
shaping the career of some of the stars of
the sports.
Eskilstuna has a proud industrial heritage
but has transformed into one of the
most environmentally smartest cities in
Europe. Therefore it is natural to arrange
these championships while being atten
tive to the environment. This sustainable
responsibility is core value for European
Athletics in organising our events to
make a positive contribution towards
local communities.
The European Athletics Junior Champion
ships is extremely important for the
development of athletics in Europe.
Throughout each of the previous 22
editions we have had the cream of
European junior athletic talent battling
for supremacy in their age group and this
year is sure to be no different. Many have
Eskistuna has excellent facilities for the
athletes and I have no doubt that there
will be a great atmosphere at the stadium
in July.
European Athletics greatly appreciates
the efforts of the Swedish Athletics
Federation, the City of Eskilstuna and
the Local Organising Committee in the
preparation for the Championships.
We are looking forward to seeing you in
Eskilstuna in July for four days of exciting
athletics competition.

AT LAST THE EUROPEAN ATHLETICS JUNIOR
CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 ARRIVES IN ESKILSTUNA!
On 16 July the gates open to the largest event
ever hosted by Eskilstuna and we are proud
to welcome more than 1,000 athletes and
around 500 leaders and coaches representing
49 different nations to Eskilstuna. We expect
many relatives and spectators to this event that
promises to be like a huge festival. Many of
today’s big athletic stars started their careers at
junior championships and we are likely to meet
some of tomorrow’s big stars here this summer.
Eskilstuna has a strong standing when it comes
to sports with several sport associations and
clubs. Athletics is one of the most popular
sports among the city’s youth. Hosting such a
major event as the European Athletics Junior
Championships is therefore not only a boost
to the city, but also a source of inspiration for
our youth. It is an opportunity to see and be
inspired by the absolute best athletes and
perhaps a way to become interested in joining
a sport association.
Together with the European Athletic Associa
tion, local sports associations and the business
community, we will offer an event filled with joy,
engagement, challenges and excitement. It is
not just a sporting event, but a big festival that
will involve all of Eskilstuna during four days.
There will be entertainment for the athletes,
local residents, guests and visitors with artists
and events throughout the days.
We look forward to four fantastic athletic days.
Welcome to Eskilstuna!

Leisure board, Eskilstuna Municipality
EUROPEAN ATHLETICS JUNIOR CHAMPION
SHIPS 2015 SET TO ATTRACT RECORD NUMBER
OF ATHLETES
One of the biggest challenges in athletics is
to motivate teenagers to stay active as they
grow older. In the late teens, there are so many
things that compete for attention, making it
difficult to maintain the will and energy needed
to optimize practice.
Therefore, it is especially pleasing to note that
everything indicates that the European Athletics
Junior Championships 2015 will set a new
record when it comes to athletes competing.
We hope this is a sign that a growing number
of teenagers stay with their sport.
In the competition for teenagers’ time, interna
tional championships have an important func
tion. A championship is a challenge that nour
ishes dreams and feeds desires. It is a high goal
to set but it can be broken down into smaller
ones – reaching the qualifying limit, making the
national team, setting a new personal best and
4
placing high at the competition.
A championship is also a major challenge for us
as the hosting city. We want to showcase young
athletics at the highest European class while at
the same time showing off a summery Eskilstuna
to Europe.
We want to offer a hearty welcome to Sweden
to all the athletes and everyone interested in
athletics and we hope that each and every visitor
to European Athletics Junior Championships
2015 will bring with them good memories from
our town and the championships.

A CHAMPIONSHIP TO BEAT
EXPECTATIONS
There is no doubt that athletics has a strong
foothold in Eskilstuna. It is the most popular
sport among our youth and our strong community programs attract many dedicated
enthusiasts. That makes us a strong sport
city. And that is why we have taken on the
challenge to organize a championship that
will beat all expectations. Visitors will not
only experience high-class athletics, they
will also be welcomed by a city that is ready
to put on a great feast. Eskilstuna will offer
events that extend outside the arena with
festivities that continue long after the day’s
medals have been given out.
The spirit of Eskilstuna permeates everything
in this great event down to the smallest
details. This is reflected, for example, in that
the championship is a ‘green’ event with
focus on the environment and sustainability.
That is also why the concept and logotype
were influenced by water – Eskilstuna is,
after all, a water town situated between the
lakes Mälaren and Hjälmaren with the Eskilstuna creek meandering between them and
through the city center.
Our tradition as an industrial town is reflected
in the handcrafted medals that have been
forged by hand in forgeries that are several
hundreds of years old. Eskilstuna is also
known as a music town, and that too has
influenced the event. The music score, which
will be heard in the arena, and the official
championship songs - Do the best you can and
Champions - were written by representatives
from the Eskilstuna Music School.
When you visit the championship, you get
more than athletics. You get the best of
Eskilstuna.

SOUNDTRACK CREATED
BY THE STARS OF TOMORROW
The European Athletics Junior
Championships has its own, locally
produced soundtrack! The three
songs “Do the Best You Can”,
“Champion” and “Water Running
Fast” have been created by Mathilde
Stavehaug and David Kennhed –
students at Eskilstuna Music School
and stars of tomorrow – together
with their teacher Stefan Flink.
Mathilde Stavehaug, 19, and David Kennhed,
15, are the music students behind the
championship’s soundtrack. Mathilde sings
on the soundtrack’s lead song, “Do the Best
12
You Can”, which is produced by her teacher
Stefan Flink, and David has written and
produced the song “Champion”.
CHAMPION
David Kennhed studies music creation in
computers at Eskilstuna Music School, where
he’s been a student since the age of 10. He
likes to create electronic dance music and in
the song “Champion” we can hear how the
championship’s water theme gets to express
itself in this very genre.
DO THE BEST YOU CAN
Mathilde’s musical path started at Eskilstuna
Music School where she’s been studying
singing, piano and saxophone. She recently
graduated from the upper secondary school
St Eskil, where she focused her studies on
arts and performance, and you can really tell
that she likes being on stage.
STEFAN TEACHES AT THE SCHOOL
Stefan Flink – also known as DJ Flink –
teaches piano and music creation in computers
at Eskilstuna Music School. He’s also the one
who’s produced the songs “Do the Best You
Can” and “Water Running Fast” from the
European Athletics Junior Championship
soundtrack.
The soundtrack is available on Spotify! To
find it, search for “Official Soundtrack JEM
2015” in the Spotify search engine. Enjoy!

”THE CHAMPIONSHIP IS
A GREAT EXPERIENCE”
With his brand new junior record,
Simon Litzell ranks as the tenth best
javelin thrower ever in Sweden,
including seniors. Now, he has his
sight set on the summer championship where he is aiming for
good results.
– My goal is to perform well and
then we have to see how far that
takes me.
Simon Litzell first picked up a javelin when he
was ten at the athletics school in Österund.
When he threw it across the field where he
was training with his father and brother, he
surprised everyone. His father sensed his talent
and started practicing with Simon. Eight years
later, Simon is competing with the elite.
– In many cases, it means having to build up
your strength, but this javelin suits me better.
It responds better when I put my strength
behind it.
EUROPEAN ATHLETICS JUNIOR
CHAMPIONSHIPS THE BIG GOAL
The preparations ahead of the European
Athletics Junior Championships have not
been different from other years – up to
Christmas Simon practiced strength training
and at the turn of the year he switched to
throw training. During the spring, he went
for a training camp in Split, a necessity
since the Swedish spring weather left a lot
to be desired. It is necessary to have a lot
of throws behind you going in to the season,
he explains.
Simon looks forward to meeting the best in
the competitions this summer. He is slated
to compete in the Finnkampen, an event
pitching the Swedish athletic stars against
Finland’s, and in the Swedish Championship
in Söderhamn. But the biggest goal is the
championships in Eskilstuna.
– I really look forward to compete on my
home grounds. My goal is to perform well
and then we have to see how far that takes
me. I will be competing against those who
are a year older than me, so it will be a great
experience.
– I have waited all my life to get serious with
my sport. It is rewarding that my results get
attention. I want to be seen and heard, given
how much time I spend practicing, he says.
BROKE JUNIOR RECORD FROM 1986
Simon got much attention at this year’s season
opener when he broke Patrik Bodén’s 29-yearold junior record by throwing 78,73 meters.
The old record was 74,66 meters. Simon says
the record was expected and surprising, at
the same time.
– I was close to breaking the record last year
and expected to throw around 75 meters.
Everything felt good, but I was surprised
to reach 78 meters since the throw wasn’t
technically perfect. But that is good, it means
that I have more to give, he says.
The achievement is even more superb given
that he recently switched from using a junior
javelin to the heavier senior one weighing
0,8 kg. Making that switch often implies a big
change, but that was not the case for Simon.

WILLE LEVAY
– A MIDDLE DISTANCE TALENT
Wille Levay, 18, made it to the finals
in the 1,500 meter race at the World
Junior Championship in Eugene,
Oregon, last summer when he
neared the Swedish junior record for
the distance. This summer, the goal is
to win a medal in Eskilstuna.
In Eugene, Wille Levay showed that he is best
when it matters and with a new personal best
at 3.48, 28 he unexpectedly made it to the
finals. The time was just a mere second behind
Morgan Tollofsén’s 25-year-old Swedish junior
record. In the finals, Wille came ninth on his
second best time ever.
After an eight place in the cross-country European Championship junior race in December
and participation in the junior cross-country
World Championship in China, his training
has gone well. He set two new personal
records over 3,000 and 5,000 meters at the
end of May.
– But it is only four competition days so I will
probably concentrate on 1,500 meters, he says.
Wille was born in Huddinge, southwest of
Stockholm, but since 2004 he lives in Danderyd
north of town. He has been studying at a special
sport high school and graduated in June. He
has also been active in soccer and ice hockey.
– I played soccer with FC Djursholm up until
I turned 16 primarily as an outer mid-fielder
since I had to run a lot in that position. On the
ice, I played forward with a team in Stocksund
but stopped when I was 13, he says.
PRACTICING WITH THE BEST
In 2014 Wille trained according to a program
designed by Jama Aden from Somalia who
trains some of the world’s best middle- and
long-distance runners, including world record
holder Genzebe Dibaba from Ethiopia.
– I did 14.07,60 in the 5,000 meters race and
8.05,69 in the 3,000, and I am very satisfied
with those times, he says.
– I was on a training camp with them in Spain
and it was really quite tough sessions. We did
ladders of 1,000, 600 and 400 meters with a
long rest, but it was almost too much for me
since I was only 18. But, it is extremely inspiring
to practice with those who rank among the
best in the world, he says.
The time on 3,000 meters places him as number
one in the European P19-class. It is the third
best time ever by a junior in Sweden. He is
qualified to start both in the 1,500 meters and
5,000 races and could double, if he wants to.
Wille is going to run the 1,500 meters race
at Sollentuna GP on June 25th and then he
will prepare for the European Athletics Junior
Championships. There, Sweden may win its
first junior medal for 12 years over 1500 meters.
WILLE LEVAY
”THE ATMOSPHERE WILL
BE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!”
Emma Stenlöf is the heptathlete
who has made a name for herself as
one of Sweden’s greatest athletics
prospects. With the European
Athletics Junior Championships
approaching, which will be this year’s
greatest challenge, Emma remains
calm, in spite of high expectations.
Her goal is clear – to have fun!
Emma Stenlöf had many strings to her bow
even as a child. Apart from athletics, she tried
soccer and gymnastics until she finally settled
with heptathlon.
- I was into everything and I did whatever my
sister did. But when she decided to quit
athletics, I chose to continue, says Emma.
After all the success of last year, the expectations are high. Her debut in the senior national
team contributed to the team’s victory in
the International Combined Events Outdoor
Games between Sweden, Finland and Estonia
and many hope for good results in the European Athletics Junior Championships as well.
Emma says that the pressure doesn’t affect her.
– It feels great to compete at home field –
the atmosphere and the extra support will
be absolutely amazing! Of course, I will be
nervous as well but I try not to think about it.
The most important thing is to have fun.
Of all the seven events of heptathlon, Emma
prefers the high jump – at least for now.
– It varies which event I like the most but right
now high jump is my favorite. There’s such a
great atmosphere in high jump competitions,
maybe it’s because it’s so obvious to the
audience if you clear the height or not.
Even if Emma’s goal with the championships is
to have fun, there is a vision of the road ahead.
– I think that all athletes biggest dream is to
get to the Olympics. That wouldn’t be too bad.

KONRAD BUKOWIECKI IS
ON THE PATH TO JOINING
AN IMPRESSIVE LIST
Konrad Bukowiecki is 18 years old
but such is his desire to reach the
top he talks more like a veteran
than a teenager. Last summer, in
the aftermath of winning the shot
put at the Youth Olympic Games
in Nanjing, he was asked to assess
his performance.
– I feel bad because I wanted to make the
Polish (5kg shot) record of 23.23m but I was
six centimetres short, so I don’t feel great, said
Bukowiecki. My main aim was to throw the
record. The gold is a bonus but I don’t feel
satisfied.
One short paragraph, a handful of words, and
an incredible insight into the focus and mind
of one of the finest young talents in track and
field who is setting himself targets where even
gold itself is not enough.
The next step in his development will arrive
when he takes to the shot put circle at the
Ekängen Arena in Eskilstuna for the European
Athletics Junior Championships between July
16–19, and he will do so after a sensational
winter where he mixed it with the big boys of
the event by finishing sixth, and in style, at the
20
European Athletics Indoor Championships in
Prague. In the Czech Republic, he managed
to reach 20.46m in both qualifying and in the
final with the heavier 7.26kg shot, a European
Junior indoor record.
When you consider that gold was won with
21.23m by the double World champion David
Storl, of Germany, it shows how close Bukowiecki
is to matching the very best. Infact, he was only
20 centimetres off of bronze.
Athletics runs in his family. His father, Ireneusz,
is a former decathlete, who is his coach and
the combination is taking the teenager to the
greatest heights.
But in Storl, there perhaps lies his next target,
and one that could be achieved in Eskilstuna, because the all-time European Athletics junior outdoor record with the 6kg shot
of 22.73m - which is also a world junior record
- is held by the German while Bukowiecki’s
best is 22.06m.
In Eskilstuna, it will need a brilliant effort from
one of his rivals to halt Bukowiecki from adding
this illustrious title to his roll of honours. In 2013,
he won gold at the European Youth Olympic
Festival in Utrecht before along with his triumph
last summer in Nanjing, he was also crowned
IAAF World Junior champion in Eugene.
It is some step up from the junior ranks to the
seniors, yet in Prague, the huge crowds at the
02 Arena saw a star in the making as he proved
that age can be irrelevant if the quality is there
in abundance.
He first broke the European Athletics Junior
indoor record in the second round of qualifying where he was fifth overall before the final
where he repeated the act with 20.46m with
his first effort. He had only three more legal
throws, but the consistency was impressive, as
he reached 20.41m, 20.44m and 20.19m.
Could he beat that in Sweden? He will surely
be looking to do so, particularly because in
January in Torun he threw 22.38m to break the
World Junior indoor record of 22.35m which
had been held by Storl since December 2009.
Storl himself won gold at the European Athletics
Junior Championships in Novi Sad in 2009 and
that is what the essence of this fabulous event
is all about – the present and the future.
Across the decades the championships have
produced a host of medallists who have progressed to become stars, and superstars, on
the Olympic, World and senior European stage
and Konrad Bukowiecki is on the path to
joining an impressive list.

ENVIRONMENTALLY
CERTIFIED
Eskilstuna is at the forefront when
it comes to environmental work
and is a role model internationally.
The city is home to the world’s
most advanced optical waste and
garbage recycling system. We
are at the top when it comes to
ranking energy-efficient European
cities. We have Sweden’s largest
landscaped wetland that purifies
wastewater while at the same being
a scenic recreational area. We place
at the top in different Swedish
environmental rankings. We call it:
EnvironmentalEvolution.
It goes without saying that the championship
will be held in the same environmental spirit.
We want to create the opportunity and possibility for visitors and athletes to be climate-smart
and to act with the environment in mind. Therefore, we have worked with the energy company
Eskilstuna Energi & Miljö with the sustainability
developer Susanna Thörn. Susanna has also
been given the task to certify the event.
26
– The environmental certification builds on a
number of obligatory elements. Additionally,
the event must meet at least 75 percent of the
requirements on a practical checklist, she says.
The practical checklist involves areas such as
choice of venue, procurement and contracts,
as well as purchasing and transports.
– In my work, we follow up the requirements
that need to be met in order for the event to
obtain environmental certification. We look at
the requirements placed on the organizer and
on the practical checklist, she says.
To further support the environmental work, the
championship has an environmental policy that
has been prepared by the organization Svensk
Miljöbas. The environmental policy stipulates,
among other things, that there must be eco
logical alternatives at the kiosks by the arena,
that the electricity used during the event is green
and that it must be easy to recycle garbage.
The European Athletics Junior Championships
gives Eskilstuna an opportunity to convey its
broad knowledge about working environmentally and climate-smart to people from different
parts of a big region. It is an event that conveys
a positive view on the future where the stars of
tomorrow take their place in the environment
of tomorrow.
THE GREEN
CHAMPIONSHIPS
• The European Athletics Junior Championships
2015 will actively create opportunities for visitors
to act environmentally sound and to encourage
a sustainable lifestyle. There will, among other
things, be clear signs about recycling.
• Ecological food products will be premiered. The
coffee served will be ecologically produced and
aequivalent. At least one vegetarian alternative
will be on the menu.
• The electricity used on the festival area will be
green electricity.
• Visitors will be informed about public transport
and about environmentally friendly transportation.
• Garbage and waste will be recycled. By the food
courts there will be recycling bins for compost,
plastic, glass, metal, newspaper and PET/cans and
incinerates.
• The total amount of waste will be minimised and
non-recyclable products will be avoided.
• Tap water in Sweden is fresh, free and safe to
drink. At the festival area there will be water
fountains for free fill-ups.

”SOME PEAK AT NINETEEN
– OTHERS ARE JUST
BEGINNING TO EXCEL”
With one Olympic gold, four World
Championships gold and 22 Swedish Championships gold medals,
Stefan Holm is undoubtedly one
of Sweden’s most successful high
jumpers in history. He recalls his
two Junior Championships with
pleasure, although he didn’t win
any medals.
– It was a bitter experience then, but in
retrospect it may have been a good thing
that I didn’t win those titles as a junior.
It has been 20 years since high jumper
Stefan Holm competed in a junior
championship. It was 1995 and after a
close final he landed in sixth place.
– It was a really big thing to be part of, both
in 1993 and 1995. It proved that I was on
the right track. I was frustrated when I didn’t
win, but in the end it may have been for the
best. It kept me hungry, Holm says.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
COMPETING AS A JUNIOR AND A
SENIOR?
Switzerland. Naturally.
28
– It is more playful and relaxed at junior
championships, and you really get a sense
of that when you are there. It’s also fun to
watch juniors as it’s not always the winners
who go on to have great careers. Everyone
develops differently, some peak at 19,
others are just beginning to excel.
Stefan sees some differences today compared with when he was a junior.
– When I went away to compete as a
17-year-old I had no clue as to who I would
meet. I barely knew the other Swedes in the
troop. Today, everyone is more aware.
Everyone knows and follows one another on
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and they
keep track of personal bests. That’s good, of
course, but it can also add pressure.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THE
SWEDISH ATHLETES TO COMPETE
IN ESKILSTUNA?
– It’s big to compete at home. I did that
during the 2006 European Athletics
Championships in Gothenburg. It’s
something for the young athletes to look
forward to. If the Championships get a lot
of media attention it will also attract more
young people to try athletics.
Stefan stays involved in athletics and, among
other things, he trains Henrik Thoms, a
19-year-old high jump talent who reached
the final at the World Youth Championships. He hopes that Henrik’s knee injury
will heal in time for the championships.
– I hope he gets well. He really wants to be
part of this.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO
SOMEONE WHO IS PREPARING FOR
THE CHAMPIONSHIPS?
– To take the chance and go for it. I would
have been extremely disappointed if I had
not tested myself to see how far I could
get. The Junior Championships are really
major and a great experience, but cultivate
the awareness that life doesn’t end after
this. An athletic career lasts another ten to
15 years and you may be part of bigger
things ahead.

“I HOPE EVERYONE WILL HAVE
A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE”
Carolina Klüft burst onto the world
stage during the 2001 European
Athletics Junior Championships,
in Grosseto, claiming gold in the
heptathlon. Then she became one
of the best heptathletes of all time
with her European record of 7032
points in 2007 which still stands.
– Competing in junior championships gives
you vital experience to take into your sporting
career, says Klüft.
Success came early for Carolina Klüft, who won
an Olympic gold, three World Championship
victories and two European Championship
golds in the heptathlon among her many
achievements. Looking back, Klüft recalls her
junior years as both formative and educational.
– They’re similar to senior championships,
which makes it easier to perform well when
moving up to bigger events as a senior later
on. That said, I should add that if you don’t
compete in a junior championships when
you’re younger, you have just as much
chance of succeeding at senior level. There
are many paths to the top.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THE SWEDISH
ATHLETES TO COMPETE IN ESKILSTUNA?
– Competing in a championship event on
home soil is a unique experience. You can
really gain extra energy from the home crowd
as they cheer you on. It’s fantastic to see Eskilstuna supporting sport and hosting this type
of event, which is so important to our young
Swedish athletes – whether they’re competing
simply to have fun or aiming to reach the top
of the tree.
Carolina thinks this summer’s event is vital for
junior athletes.
– I hope and believe that we’ll see more of
these athletes in the future, but more than
anything, I hope everyone has a fantastic time
and gains valuable experience from which they
can draw throughout their whole lives.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO
THE JUNIOR ATHLETES?
– Let yourself be inspired, and listen to and
learn from other people – but make sure you
plot a course which works for you.

”THE MORE FUN YOU BRING TO YOUR SPORT, THE
GREATER CHANCE YOU HAVE TO SUCCEED”
Christian Olsson was 19 the first
time he managed to qualify for the
European Athletics Junior Championships. Once there, in Riga, he made
his mark by winning medals not only
in one, but two separate disciplines.
With a gold medal in high jump and
a silver medal in triple jump he
became the athlete to watch.
– Being a junior was exciting. The previous
season I’d had an explosive development and
improved my results over a short period of
time. When I took the gold in the high jump
and silver in triple jump, people really started
watching me, says Christian Olsson.
Given the high risk of injury when competing
in both high jump and triple jump, Olsson
decided to focus on one of the two, and the
decision was finalised when he qualified for
the Olympics in triple jump. It turned out to be
a successful choice that lead to, among other
things, an Olympic gold medal, a gold at the
World Championships and two European gold
medals. Olsson reckons that his success at the
European Athletics Junior Championships was
a great boost to his continued career.
– It was a great feeling to win that gold medal,
especially since I managed to do something
that Patrik Sjöberg never achieved as a junior.
Sjöberg took bronze at these championships
30
and knowing what he went on to achieve as a
senior made me believe even more in myself.
It also meant I managed to sign up sponsors
who believed in me.
Olsson says that junior athletes often have a
strong will that is not visible the same way in
seniors.
– A fun thing with these junior championships
is that there is a hunger there among the contestants, a sense of being invincible. Few of
them have yet to experience injuries and they
don’t see any limit to what they can achieve.
As a senior you become more aware of your
limitations, which can lead to mental barriers.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT
SWEDEN HOSTING THE
CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS YEAR?
– It’s a great feeling to compete on home
ground and to be host nation. The championships will get a lot of attention, which is inspiring
for the athletes and motivates younger people
to try athletics.
While the competition is serious business,
Olsson stresses the importance of having fun
during the championships.
– The more fun you bring to your sport, the
greater chance you have to succeed. It’s
important to be willing to take the chance to
succeed, even if that also opens up for the
possibility of failing. You have to have faith in
yourself. Then, anything can happen.

EUROPEAN
JUNIOR CH
MEDALS WORTHY A WINNER
The dream to win a medal lies behind
the many hours that the junior
athletes spend daily on practice. It
is that dream that drives them to
run even faster, jump even higher
and throw even longer. The moment when the coveted medal is
awarded is the ultimate reward, and
the medal ceremonies are among
the most emotionally charged
memories from a championship.
Before the games, three Eskilstuna companies
joined forces to produce the 180 medals that
will be awarded during the European Athletics
Junior Championships 2015. The medal has
two distinct parts, the denomination which is
embossed in gold, silver or bronze, and the
hand-engraved sun and wreath that surround it.
The motive is a variant of the logotype for the
European Athletics Junior Championships 2015.
The medals were hand forged by Smedja
Sothönan in the Rademacher forgeries that date
back to the 1600s. aStory Kommunikations
byrå came up with the design and the
denominations were delivered by Svenska
Medalj AB, the company that also makes the
Nobel Prize medals.
The medals represent a symbolic meeting
between Eskilstuna’s history and the athletic
stars of tomorrow. Eskilstuna has a long
tradition of metal forging dating back to
the 1600s when Reinhold Rademacher was
given a special royal privilege and moved
his workshop to Eskilstuna. Eskilstuna Fristad
was one factor that enabled Eskilstuna to
develop into an industrial city.
