FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Y ACHIEVERS
Y SCHOLARS
A College Readiness, Academic
Achievement, and Career Development
Program for Minority Youth
The Y Scholars program is an extracurricular educational and
team mentoring program that supports minority youth in the
5th - 12th grades that provides support for the college
application process and features career exploration, character
and values development and service learning opportunities.
Volunteer adult role models - or Y Scholar Mentors encourage participants to aspire to high standards, excel in
school and attend college to achieve their goals .

Y SCHOLARS MENTORS NEEDED!
Do you have 6 - 10 hours a month to change a
young person's life in a positive and meaningful
way? The Princeton Family YMCA needs adult
volunteers who are willing to attend two sessions
per month with middle and high school students,
share in group sessions, and be matched with one
or two students to encourage and support their
achievement throughout the year.
Contact Denise Soto at 609-497-9622 x 209 or
dsoto@princetonymca.org for information on how
you can make a difference today.
COMMITTED & FAITHFUL
PRINCETONIANS
The Y’s Committed and Faithful Princetonians program wants
to motivate children to learn to achieve excellence in school,
and develop social skills. Group leaders Fern and Larry Spruill
and their corps of volunteers do this by working with
community leaders, the schools, the churches, the police, and
other non-profit organizations in the community. The group
meets bi-weekly and enjoys a sit-down dinner together,
prepared by Fern herself, before hearing a presentation from
a local volunteer leader. The group also plans and raises
funds to share in fun, social activities throughout the year.
For more information or to learn about volunteer and
speaking opportunities, please contact Fern Spruill at
fernspruill@comcast.net.
YMCA HISTORY FACT
Y Achievers programs started in Houston, TX in 1967 to provide African American teens with a
positive sense of self and aspirations for professional careers in the workforce, the purpose of
YMCA Black Achievers is “to help teens of color set and pursue high educational and career goals
resulting in graduation and acceptance to an institution of higher learning.” Black Achievers
programs meet weekly or bi-weekly throughout the year at local YMCAs, high schools or college
campuses all over the country. Through academic aid, career exploration and mentoring, this
program helps youth to raise their academic standards, develop a positive sense of self, build
character, explore diverse college and career options, and learn from role models who inspire
them to greater heights.
