Newsletter From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Carers The Circus is coming to town! The “Bite-Sized Circus” – Littlest Show on Earth! will be at our school, under the big top on our oval on Tuesday 18th November for a performance at 6.30pm. Bookings are now being taken and Bite-Sized Circus will give preference to anyone who writes "UC High School Kaleen" in the message form of the online bookings. See the flyer in the newsletter for more information. Bookings can be made from the site: www.bitesizedcircus.com or by phoning: 0414 823417. The tent will go up on the oval on Sunday Night. Could the community please keep a watchful eye out. There will be a security presence at all times. To get feedback from the community on the Annual Operating Plan 2015 there will be a combined P&C and Board Community Consultation Meeting on Wednesday 3rd of December from 6.00pm till 7.00pm in the school library. All members of the community are invited. We need your input into the plans for next year. This meeting will replace the proposed Community Consultation Meetings. UCAN Perform – ‘Big Night Out’ will be coming your way on the 10th December. There will be a community BBQ run by the P&C from 5.00pm till 6.00pm. In that hour there will a range of exhibitions, travelling performances and displays. A two hour show will follow in the gym, featuring Rock Bands, Dance, Circus and Drama plus a few other surprises. Entry will be by family or individual donation. All monies raised will go towards covering the cost of the hire of equipment for the evening and towards purchasing more materials for UCAN Perform. Our Year 7 enrolments for 2015 are well over 70. If you know of any community members who have not enrolled for next year could you strongly encourage them to do so. If your child won’t be at UC High School next year could you please also let us know? The school has made a decision to buy further services to support the wellbeing of our students. We will have a Youth School Nurse for two days a week and counselling services will be provided by Menslink for two hours a week. This combined with a counsellor for two days a week will give the school the capacity to support our students and be more proactive in building strong sustainable programs. I can confirm that our Musician in Residence Aron Lyon will be working for two days a week next year and UCAN Rock – Rock Bands Pathway will be stronger than ever. Ryan Whitmore will continue as our Dance Teacher in Residence and will take more a of leadership role in UCAN Perform productions. Michael Rosenberg will continue with the Ukulele program. Denis Dickinson Principal UC High School Kaleen UCHSK ELECTRONICS POLICY The emerging technologies of electronic devices are a part of everyday life and can add value to a student’s educational experience if appropriately incorporated into the learning program. However, some use is inappropriate in the school environment and can be disruptive to student learning. The major issues relating to the use of electronic devices in the school environment include: Disruption to educational programs through the receipt and transmission of messages Privacy concerns related to the ability of many devices to take photographs or record conversations without the knowledge or consent of those being recorded Access and interface with inappropriate materials via the internet Potential for cyber bullying including the sender’s view that they have anonymity Loss and/or theft Potential for breach of copyright Duty of care to take reasonable steps to prevent persons being harmed by access to inappropriate materials, by cyber bullying, by defamation and/or threats of violence etc. UC High School does not take responsibility for the loss, theft or damage of a student’s electronic device. Unless otherwise directed by a staff member; any electronic device that is carried onto the school premises, and/or into school environments by a student must be switched off and kept out of sight between the hours of 8.55am and 3.00pm, except during recess and lunch. Parents/Carers: It is the responsibility of parents/carers to support and reinforce the school policy regarding the acceptable use of electronic devices at UC High School Kaleen and to ensure that their child is complying with the policy. In the event that emergency phone communication between students and families is necessary, communication should take place through the Front Office by phoning 62055811. Any misuse of mobile phones will result in confiscation of the phone by the Principal. We would appreciate contact with the school before 9.30am. A message can be left on the answering machine prior to 8.30am. A reminder that when students sign in late, they must return the white slip to the attendance office the following day with a parent/guardian signature. Or email to: rollsoffice@kaleenhs.act.edu.au BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL SUPERVISION The school does not provide supervision before and after school. Parents are asked to make sure that students come to school as close as possible before the bell rings at 8.55am and that they are picked up at 3.00pm. Executive staff are on duty at the bus stop until 3.20pm and the front office should be contacted in an emergency. UCHS Kaleen newsletters are completed in weeks 3 and 7 every term. They are sent home via email and displayed on our webpage each month for viewing by our school community. Parents are often advised of school activities and events in the newsletters so it is very important that you advise us of any changes to your email address. If you would like your newsletter sent electronically, please email: UCHSKaleen.Information@ed.act.edu.au with your current email address. CONTACTING STUDENTS Occasionally parents/carers need to contact young people at school. The school will make every effort to facilitate immediate contact in an emergency or otherwise urgent situation. However, we ask that parents/carers be patient with the school in the case of non-urgent situations. School staff will endeavour to get messages to students in a way that minimises disruption to student learning. The school minimises the use of the PA system for this reason. The PA system will generally not be used to contact individual students. In non-urgent situations students will be asked to make contact with parents during recess or lunch breaks. Issue 7/2014 October 3 UC HIGH SCHOOL KALEEN UNIFORM POLICY Thankyou to the many students (and their families) who have shown their support by wearing our school uniform. Students at UC High School Kaleen are strongly encouraged to adhere to the uniform guidelines, and it is compulsory to wear school uniform on excursions, and at various school functions. The following clothing items are included in our Uniform Policy: Tops School uniform tops embroidered with the UCHS Kaleen Logo (available by order from the Front Office) Pants/Shorts/Skirts Students may wear navy, black or dark grey pants, trackpants or shorts. Female students may wear box pleat skirts. Shorts/ skirts need to be an appropriate length (mid thigh or longer). Jumpers/Hoodies School Hoodies/Hoodie Jackets, Polar Fleeces and Rugby Tops are available by order from the Front Office. Students may also wear plain navy jumpers, hoodies or jackets. Footwear Sports shoes (Runners/Joggers) or black leather shoes. Enclosed shoes are a safety requirement for Science, Technology and Cooking. Caps/hats are encouraged for sun protection outside, but must be taken off inside. Ordering Uniforms Uniform tops can be easily purchased via our Front Office. Students are welcome to come in and try on various sizes and payment can be made by cash, cheque or credit card. We endeavor to hold as much variety of stock as possible (within financial constraints), however there is sometimes a delay of 2 -3 weeks in providing a particular item if we have run out of stock and an order needs to be placed with our supplier in Melbourne. UNIFORM NEWS LAST CHANCE SALE We have a small collection of iconic ‘Limited Edition’ unclaimed 2014 Year 10 tops. PE Sports shoes (Runners/Joggers). For hygiene reasons it is requested that students bring a plain T Shirt to change into for PE classes. Prices now slashed to $10!!! Students who are inappropriately dressed may be required to change into clothing provided by the school. Tops may only be purchased by Year 10 students or Staff, so rush in quick to grab a bargain before they all go! No singlet-type garments or those that expose the midriff are permitted. Thongs or backless shoes are not acceptable. In some cases parents will be contacted. Secondhand Stock We have a small supply of secondhand stock. If you have any uniforms (in reasonable condition!) that your child has grown out of, particularly Dri Polo’s, we would greatly appreciate it if you would consider donating them to the school. Plans are underway for an ‘Uncovered Day’ to visit their facilities and learn more about the programs offered by their organisation. A small number of students will be offered the opportunity to visit the Narrabundah Childcare Centre and the Tuggeranong Community Centre to learn about career opportunities such as childcare, aged care, social services and community work. Following from this, there will be opportunities in WEX and ASBA’s for interested students with a reciprocal agreement for our school to host a preschool visit later in the term. The Uncovered Day is offered to Year 9/10 students only - if your child is interested in attending please encourage them to speak with Ms Omufila as soon as possible as there are limited spaces available. In addition we are also engaging in preliminary discussions with one of our Beacon business supporters regarding possible WEX and ASBA opportunities for our students – watch this space! Faith Omufila and Tania Carnegie 5 READY STEADY COOK FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK BEE LITERACY WEEK UPDATE - SPELLING Last week the year 8’s had a Ready Steady Cook class. This involved the students receiving a list of ingredients that they could use, with no further instructions other than they must present a dish within the allocated time slot, name it and present it for marking by Ms. Omufila. It took us awhile to get there, but the final of the 2014 Spelling Bee has been held. It seems you had to be named ‘Lachlan’ to succeed, with Lachlan (Year 10) taking first place, and Lachlan (Year 8) coming in second. Well done to all the finalists, who managed to correctly spell words they claimed to have never heard, demonstrating their excellent understanding of spelling rules. They did an amazing job . Each group came up with a creative, clever, well presented dish; none of them being the original recipe of zucchini slice!! Dishes consisted of: Breakfast Pizza - by Andrew and Nick English Breakfast - by Drew and Steve Fritters - by Lauren and Bec Savoury Muffins - by Zoe and Miriam Zucchini Bake – by Julia and Kira Special Rice dish – by Hajar and Tim These sessions will continue for the following weeks with other year levels, to provide students with opportunities to put their cooking skills into practice as they move to independent living in future years. LITERACY WEEK UPDATE - BOOK SWAP Thanks to everyone who donated and swapped books. We raised $25 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Given that we only asked for a gold coin donation, this is a great result, and we plan to run this activity again in 2015. HALLOWEEN IN THE LIBRARY Other upcoming projects involve Special Event Catering Cake Competitions, Christmas Trees and Gingerbread people. We welcome Petra on board. Issue 7/2014 October The coffee club continues to flourish and attracts Food Technology/ Hospitality students as well as other students keen to acquire coffee preparation skills as an added advantage when looking for part-time jobs. Congratulations to Max S and Fabia A for their outstanding commitment and participation in running the Coffee Club. Also a huge thankyou to all the staff who have continued to support the Coffee Club through purchasing and encouraging students. We are moving forward to developing our very own VET course in 2016. The shirts have been chosen from a selection by the Year 9 students and are in school colours. The school logo will be on the front left hand side and their chosen nickname in vinyl lettering on the back with “15”for 2015 composed on the sleeves. Nicknames will be vetted by the school to ensure they are appropriate. The curriculum has been majorly driven by the students under the umbrella “every chance to learn”, Australian National Curriculum and the VET competencies. Students have made interesting discoveries about their cooking skills and the multiple ways they can put these skills to use whilst making healthy, informed choices. Students have been involved in planning, organisation and catering for small and large events in the school. We are looking forward to more Ready Steady Cook sessions, special event cake designing and decoration projects, gingerbread houses and Christmas Tree competitions towards the end of the semester. It is anticipated that feedback from professional chefs and experienced judges will move the standards to a whole new level. Excursions to simulated environments have provided students with opportunities to match the theory component of the unit to practice in a commercial kitchen and restaurant. Students are encouraged to share recipes that will be incorporated into the cooking program if they meet the criteria: short recipes, healthy options and with reasonable cost for ingredients. 7 COMMUNITY NEWS Education Forum: Supporting Education for Migrant and Refugee Families The Education Forum is on: Wednesday, 12 November 2014 6.00 pm - 8.30 pm Community Hall, Cook Community Hub, 41 Templeton St, Cook A light dinner, including vegetarian food, will be provided. Parents and teachers are invited to attend the annual information exchange between schools, parent groups, teachers and newly emerging communities in Canberra. ANZAC SPIRIT COMPETITION ACT Chief Minister’s ANZAC Spirit Prize 2015 competition closes 13 November 2014 A reminder that the ACT Chief Minister’s ANZAC Spirit Prize 2015 competition closes on 13 November 2014. Up to four winning students, accompanied by two teachers, will represent the ACT on a funded 14 day Study Tour of Turkey, including Istanbul, Troy and the Gallipoli Peninsula between 16 and 29 April 2015. The competition is open to all ACT students in years 9 or 10 in 2014, aged between 14 and 17 years of age. Information about the competition, including the Itinerary, Terms and Conditions and the Student Entry Form are available on the ACT Education and Training Directorate’s website: http://www.det.act.gov.au/act-chief-ministersanzac-spirit-prize-2015 . *UCHSK does not necessarily endorse the products or services advertised Issue 7/2014 October 8 FACULTY REPORT- ENGLISH,SOSE AND LANGUAGES The first few weeks of this term have flown by, but it’s been fantastic seeing our students so engaged in their learning. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are all completing poetry units in English. While some are completing anthologies for their assignments, the Year 9s will be analysing song lyrics for their use of poetic devices. Ms O’Rourke and Ms Siemionow demonstrated how to do this by reciting the Cold Chisel song ‘Khe Sahn’ as a poem, and found the lyrics full of rhyme, metaphor and alliteration. In SOSE the Year 10s have almost completed their participation in the ASX Sharemarket Game, and it looks like the ‘Iron Bank of Kaleen’ will be the most successful syndicate at our school. Unfortunately, the timing of the game coincided with a downturn in the market, and our teams have made more losses than wins. Still, the Year 10s seemed to have enjoyed the game, and we look forward to introducing more students to it in 2015. Our Year 7 and 8 SOSE students have been working on oral presentations. The Year 7s have been learning about some of Australia’s most successful entrepreneurs, while the Year 8s have been developing advertisements to inform young people about their consumer rights. We look forward to seeing the results of their work over the next week. All SOSE classes will move on to studying the Civics and Citizenship unit of the Australian Curriculum from week 4. We are planning an excursion to the Electoral Education Centre and Parliament House at the end of the term, and look forward to taking many students with us.
