ANTIPHON:
Let my prayer come into your
presence. Incline your ear to my cry for help, O

Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament in St. Mary’s
Chapel Monday thru Friday 9AM-7 PM. Our Church is
always open all day Saturday and Sunday for visits.
Most Catholics think of St. Peter’s as the pope’s main church,
but they are wrong. St. John Lateran is the pope’s church, the
cathedral of the Diocese of Rome where the Bishop of Rome
presides.
The first basilica on the site was built in the fourth century
when Constantine donated land he had received from the
wealthy Lateran family. That structure and its successors
suffered fire, earthquake and the ravages of war, but the
Lateran remained the church where popes were consecrated
until the popes returned from Avignon in the 14th century to
find the church and the adjoining palace in ruins.
Pope Innocent X commissioned the present structure in 1646.
One of Rome’s most imposing churches, the Lateran’s
towering facade is crowned with 15 colossal statues of Christ,
John the Baptist, John the Evangelist and 12 doctors of the
Church. Beneath its high altar rest the remains of the small
wooden table on which tradition holds St. Peter himself
celebrated Mass.
PLEASE REMEMBER…those who are sick in your
prayers, Judy Polley, Peter Xuan-Thuy Nguyen, Grace
Fischer, Sue Kobleas, Matthew Rittenhouse, Dan Keating and
Chase Marlin.
For those in need of Healing Prayer there are pray overs
the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month after the noon Mass
on the Blessed Virgin Mary side of the alter.
PLEASE REMEMBER all our
deceased benefactors especially
Rita Lamb.
Difficulty Hearing in Church? Did you know that you can bring
any transistor radio with a head set to church and tune to channel
107.5 to receive assistance with hearing. Those who have been
using this assistance are most pleased. The radio does not have to
be special. The least expensive ones work just fine.

Dear Sisters and Brother in the Lord,
Welcome to SSPJ Bishop John McIntyre. We are grateful for your pastoral visit and celebration of the Eucharist, Sunday,
September 9 at Noon. We are blessed to have a successor to the Apostles in our midst.
I know you join me in expressing SSPJ’s gratitude to Fr. Stephen DeLacy, Archdiocesan Vocation Director, for preaching
at all of our weekend celebrations of Holy Mass, November 1 & 2. What a great way to celebrate national Vocation
Awareness Week. Please continue to pray for those being called to the Sacred Priesthood and Religious Life. Father
DeLacy, and some of our young men from our parish, joined me in the rectory for soup land sandwiches after Sunday
evening’s Mass. Father DeLacy certainly establishes great rapport with youth. Please pray for the success of his outreach
to the young men of our Archdiocese. Please also remember to point out the fact to young men and women who you think
would be good candidates for the Priesthood and Religious Live. Looking at statistics, the chances of being happy in the
fulltime service of God and His Church are infinitely higher than that of any other state in life or occupation.
Speaking of Vocations, as you know the annual Seminary Collection is in process. Envelopes have been mailed to our
parish homes to solicit your help with the education/formation of our future priests. Please mail whatever sacrifice you can
make for this most worthy cause directly to the Seminary or if you prefer the collation basket on Sunday. Those who may
wish to use pledge cards for payments through the year may find these at the doors of the church. Seminarian Eric Tamney
will speak on behalf of the Appeal at our weekend Masses, November 22 & 23.
A sincere thank you to the representatives of the boy and girl scouts, CYO and youth group for the weekend service time
through the month of October for the annual “October Count”. On average we have 3,000 worshipers each Sunday at
SSPJ. This is a great tribute to our faithful parishioners and all who join us in our celebrations. We are blessed to have so
many involved people in the planning and execution of our Liturgies. Thank you and God bless you one and all. Father
DeLacy had me laughing, but proud, on Sunday when he told me that our celebrations are well oiled machines, this is due
to the fact that it is a not an infrequent comment from our many visitors. As you know the public prayer of the Church is
best done in such a way that the individual parts of the Mass, and those who execute them, are presented in a seamless way
so as not to distract from the common effort of communicating with God. Liturgy is not meant to be a show or
entertainment but a vehicle for the faith community to join in public prayer.
Thank you also to all who helped with our annual Mass of Remembrance. It was a moving experience for all involved
especially those who recently lost loved ones. +jcd

PRIESTLY FORMATION - Mr. Matthew Biedrzyck, Seminarian
People were inquisitive when I entered the Seminary after graduating from Temple University with a degree
in Business Administration. Many asked me “Why?” For me, it was perfectly clear; this was my calling.
Through prayer, time spent with Our Lord in the Eucharist, and by way of Campus Ministry, retreats, and
leading Bible studies, I grew in my faith and realized this is where God was leading me.
Once, while hearing a priest preach on the mystery of Baptism, I felt God place a desire in my heart to do the
same one day – to become a priest, myself. After some time, I entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary with
the confidence that here I would come to know His Will for me in His Church.
I’ve witnessed strong spiritual leadership from the priests in my life growing up in Holy Innocents and St.
Martha Parishes in Philadelphia. Their examples and guidance have greatly influenced me as I have grown to
more fully understand the beauty of our Catholic Faith.
I want to bring Christ to others. Once you realize Jesus Christ is there in the Eucharist – Body, Blood, Soul
and Divinity – it’s pretty powerful. St. Charles Seminary gives me the tools to learn God’s Will. I am being
formed after the heart of Jesus. Most recently, I was given the opportunity to bring Jesus into the classroom
at Bishop Shanahan High School. Sharing my story and His love allowed me to further my journey.
At the Seminary, I’ve experienced the fruits of servant leadership. I’ve learned that before you can truly lead
others, you need to first love them. I wouldn’t have had the strength or knowledge to lead in His image
without St. Charles. With the formation of strong leaders, motivated by love, our Church’s future is bright.
WAYS TO GIVE, - You may contribute to St. Charles Seminary Appeal in many ways: Pledge Gift, One
Time Gift, Credit Card Gifts, Matching Gifts, Electronic Fund Transfer, Gift of Securities, Planned Gifts,
Tribute Gifts. For more information, please visit www.stcharlesseminaryappeal.org or call 215-587-5650.

Thanks Be to God!
Students Helping Students
At SSPJ School, there is so much for which we are
grateful! Our students are spending extra time
thinking about what we should not take for granted.
Below, read what two of our second graders consider
to be blessings in their lives:
Peer Tutoring is a new initiative that is taking place
in the SSPJ Middle School Math program. On
Wednesday’s after school, students team up to help
one another with the understanding and practice of
current math concepts and study skills. Even the best
students find it helpful to work in pairs to improve
their comprehension. In addition, the key to
mastering any subject is to teach it to others. Below
are several pairs of students working together during
a peer tutoring session.
