What’s Happening?
Lost Time
Last weekend, due to Daylight Savings Time, we “gained” an hour and so recovered the hour that we lost in the
Spring (spring forward-fall back). It really is my sister Colleen’s favorite day of the year. That extra hour of sleep somecontinued on page 2

Weekends of Nov. 8-9, 15-16 & 22-23
This year's card is a beautiful Madonna and Child. The blessed
Mother is dressed in a red robe which is unusual and striking. The
detail of the Child, loosely wrapped in a blanket, is amazing. This
outstanding card is of high quality and smooth finish. Gold-lined
matching envelopes are coordinated with the color of the Madonna's
robe. A box of 20 sells for $17.
Our packet of 10 cards for $7 depicts the Nativity scene with
Mary, Joseph and the Infant Jesus. The Wise Men to the shepherds
and lambs are rich in detail. This is a card you will want to continue
to look upon.

how evokes extra bliss. I actually felt rested for the first time in months. Somehow this year it made me reflect more
than usual about the time we waste throughout the course of our lives. I don’t mean the time we take to relax or rest, I
mean the time that we take to occupy ourselves with mindless, fruitless, wasteful endeavors.
For me, the greatest example is watching television in the evening. While I am often away from the house in the
evening, I find that when I return home after a class or meeting, I tell myself that watching TV will relax me. Unfortunately there are two reasons that this isn’t the case. The first is that studies show that to sleep well you need to stop
watching TV about an hour before bed (this holds true for me). The second is that there is RARELY anything truly
worth watching (Red Wing games excluded).
Some of you may remember the song “Back in Time” by Hughie Lewis and the News. If you could go back and recover lost time, how would you spend it? As I get older, this question takes on a more significant meaning since people I
love have gone from my sight and I face the reality that time stands still for no one. What is the meaning of my life and
how can I better live it? Ultimately, other than spending more time with my loved ones, the main reason to recover time
wasted is to grow closer to God.
Someone brought to my attention the following prayer by St. Teresa of Avila:
A Prayer to Redeem Lost Time
O my God! Source of all mercy! I acknowledge Your sovereign power. While recalling the wasted years that
are past, I believe that You, Lord, can in an instant turn this loss to gain. Miserable as I am, yet I firmly believe
that You can do all things. Please restore to me the time lost, giving me Your grace, both now and in the future, that I may appear before You in "wedding garments." Amen.
I bring all of this up to remind myself (and maybe one of you) that the object of this life is union with God. The time
lost that needs to be redeem is all of the time wasted away from God. During this month of November, we pray for the
souls in purgatory. This is our way of helping them “redeem lost time”.
I am vowing this November to take advantage of every minute I am given and to pray for the souls in purgatory.
“As we enter Heaven we will see them, so many of them coming towards us and thanking us. We will ask,
who they are, and they will say a poor soul you prayed for in Purgatory.”
Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Understanding the
Lay Vocation
Have you ever wondered about the specific call and
role of the Laity, or thought you ought to deepen your
understanding of the Lay Vocation? Do you want to
learn a few practical ways in which you can share your
own personal walk with the Lord with others? Come
and join Deacon Brandon on Tuesday Nov. 18 at
7:00 pm in the Convent Basement as he presents on
the Lay Vocation. He will be sharing ways in which the
Lay Vocation shaped his own call to the priesthood as
well as offering some practical tips on how to share
your story with others.

St. Michael Christian Service
The St. Michael’s Seniors group welcomes members, single or couples, who are 55 years and up. Our mission is to provide for
the spiritual, social and educational needs of the members and to give service to the broader community when possible.
Our meetings are being held at St. Rafka’s Church Hall (on Lyndon between Farmington and Merriman roads) on the first and
third Wednesdays of the month at noon. The hall has no steps and is very accessible to all. Each member takes a turn bringing dessert. Every year during the holidays, the seniors bring food items to pack baskets for the needy of the parish.
Our treasurer, Rita Virant will collect dues of $10.00 per year. Dolores Kowalski arranges trips during the year and gives a
presentation at each meeting of the trips available . We welcome all seniors to the group and look forward to meeting with you. If
interested, please call Helen Burger at 734-522-6449.
On Tuesday, November 18, 2014, the seniors will have a narrated tour of the National Shrine of the Little Flower Catholic
Church. Afterward, we will have lunch at Loccino Italian Grill. The next stop will be to the Fieldstone Winery in Rochester. The
final stop will be to the Nino Salvaggio Market located in Troy. This is an oversized, international market. For this trip, we will
depart at 9:00 a.m. and return at 4:30 p.m. The price for the trip is $62.00.
On Sunday, January 11, 2015, the Seniors will be going to see the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and “Cirque de la Symphonie.”
The trip will begin with lunch at the majestic Café. There will be four selections for lunch: chicken salad sandwich, (with Michigan
apples and cherries, pecans, honey mayo and a hint of dill), oven roasted turkey club, the Majestic Burger, or a grilled veggie wrap
with asparagus, mushrooms, red peppers, spinach and roasted garlic veggie mayo.
After lunch it is on to Orchestra hall. The DSO and Stuart Chaftez will be joined by Cirque de la Symphonie! Aerial acrobats
will drop down into orchestra hall. Choreographed to live music by the DSO, acrobats, aerialists, strongmen, and jugglers perform
to music above and around the orchestra.
The cost is $99.00. Departure from St. Rafka will be at 12:15 p.m. and we will return about 6pm.
All trips depart from St. Rafka parish, which is located on Lyndon Ave., east of Farmington Rd. For more information, please call
Dolores Kowalski at 734-462-5970

Archdiocese of Detroit
Are you being called to the Diaconate Ministry?
The Archdiocese of Detroit’s Office for Clergy and Consecrated Life and the Permanent Diaconate Formation Team

Permanent Diaconate and what the requirements are. If you are married, please bring your wife.
Upcoming Diaconate Information Nights will take place Wednesday, October 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Major
Seminary, 2701 Chicago Blvd. in Detroit; Wednesday, October 29 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary Church, 127 N. Monroe

Please RSVP if you plan to attend, and direct any questions by calling (313) 237-5840.

On November 19, the Archdiocesan Worship Commission will offer its final training workshop for deacons and laity called to lead the prayer of their community when an emergency situation arises, and a priest is not available to
lead the Sunday celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
Funded in part by gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal, the workshops are based on the document, “Celebration of
the Liturgy of the Word on Sundays in an Emergency Situation.” The Worship Commission created this document,
and complementing workshop, to address these rare occasions and prepare communities for them.
The Wednesday, November 19, event will be held at Sacred Heart Major Seminary.
For more information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.AOD.org.
Reporting Sexual Abuse
!
To inform the Archdiocese of Detroit regarding the sexual abuse of minors by priests, deacons, and other church personnel and/or to speak to the Victim Assistance Coordinator, contact 866-343-8055. A caller will be requested to provide his or her name and telephone number. All calls regarding complaints of sexual abuse will be returned in a
timely manner. This toll–free telephone number has been established as part of an effort by the Detroit archdiocese
to protect children, young people, and other vulnerable people in our schools, parishes, and ministries. This line is
for reporting suspected sexual misconduct or child abuse within archdiocesan institutions and ministries only. Persons with complaints not involving clergy or church personnel should refer to the archdiocesan web site at
www.aod.org for contact information for civil authorities.
