Parish Mission Statement: St. Michael the Archangel Parish is a tradi!onal, welcoming Roman Catholic community that seeks to live the Gospel message of our Lord Jesus Christ. Entrus!ng ourselves to the Power of the Holy Spirit, we embrace our faith through prayer, worship, evangeliza!on, loving service and fellowship, life-long educa!on and responsible stewardship. Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 1, 2015 The Athletic Department would like to thank everyone who was able to attend our basketball games/fundraiser this past weekend. Our fundraiser was to support Jim Bourdage, a St. Michael's coach and parent who suffered a severe head injury in an automobile accident this summer. The support received from both the St. Michael and the Divine Child communities was amazing. We raised over $13,000 to help in Jim's recovery!!! There were many people who helped throughout the day, but I would like to acknowledge a few people who were instrumental in its success. Mark and Kristin Swieczkowski along with Julie and Dave Bilson for organizing the basket raffle, Courtney and Tim Sullivan for donating food and running concessions all day, the Swieczkowski and Piergentili Families for sponsoring our shooting contest, Ed VanEsley, Plymouth Dental, for sponsoring our Pop-a-shot and our basketball coordinators Mike Rzekpa and John Skubik for their help all day. Also thank you to all those who donated baskets and baked goods. The family was overwhelmed and truly touched by everyone's generosity. Thank you again for helping this day to be such a success!!! Page 2 St. Michael News, Livonia Parish Notes Catholic Schools Week. This past week our parish and school celebrated Catholic Schools Week. There were a number of activities for the students which made for an enjoyable week for the school community. The purpose of a Catholic school is to form children in the faith acknowledging Jesus as Lord and instilling in them a true sense of discipleship and God’s revelation of justice. At the same time, in conjunction with a strong emphasis on faith, St. Michael’s students are academically challenged in a program designed to help them realize their potential and to believe in themselves. An intense academic and religious program is not possible without parish and parent support. This year is a special year for our parish community as we celebrate 75 years of providing Catholic education to our young. It is the parishioners, who for these 75 years have provided the necessary funding. This is possible only through tremendous sacrifice. We do not have beautiful social halls or upgraded facilities. We have over the years forgone those niceties so that we could continue to offer an affordable education. Even today St. Michael’s has one of the lowest tuition rates, one that offers considerable reduction for families with more than one child. The success of this school is also the result of dedicated parents who continue to make the financial sacrifice to send their children to this school and to provide financial support to the parish. Their sacrifice is more than monetary as they also offer volunteer service to the school and the athletic program. For this program to continue, parents whose children have completed elementary school, need to remain committed to the mission of our faith community. Those who receive the benefit of this commitment, then leave, weaken this community and its mission. St. Michael’s School has a long and proud history and its continuation depends upon us as a community of faith. The school cannot stand separate from the parish. These two aspects of parish and school must be united in a common identity and mission. We need to see ourselves as a community of faith supporting a reverent worship environment, opportunities for adult faith enrichment, and a challenging spiritual and academic environment for our youth. For these 75 years the Felician Sisters have staffed our school and have been an active part of our faith community. With declining vocations, the Felician Sisters can no longer staff our school. The one remaining sister will complete her contract this spring and will leave. Our parish community is grateful for their ministry here at St. Michael’s. Finally, I want to state, as I did last weekend at the 10:00 Mass, it is important that we understand ourselves as one. We are not just a parish, nor are we just a school. We must see ourselves as a community of faith sharing a common mission for our children and our adults. May the Holy Spirit direct our hearts to be that unified community sharing a common vision and mission. Memorial of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr. Tuesday is the memorial of St. Blaise. On this day, with candles blessed on February 2nd the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, throats of the faithful are blessed. Blaise lived in the fourth century and was reputed to have cured a child who had a fish bone caught in his throat. By the 8th century St. Blaise was petitioned in prayer for the curing of disease, and in particular, disease of the throat. Throats will be blessed during the 8:30 Mass. Human Trafficking. The sad reality of sexual slavery exists in this modern era. Sexual exploitation of young people who are either kidnapped or held captive by drug dealers is a horrific problem, one that even exists here in the Detroit area. St. Michael’s, on Wednesday February 11th at 7:00 pm, will present Theresa Flores, LSW, MS who will speak on this world-wide problem. Young people, in particular women, are forced into sexual slavery. Theresa, raised in the Detroit area, is a survivor of forced slavery. This terrible crime against human dignity happens more than any of us realize. It happens to innocent young people from good homes that are often taken against their will. Please mark this special event on your calendar. This information can help us protect our own children from this evil of our time. Theresa’s presentation will take place in the school cafeteria.
