More Than a Face in Our Midst
By David Simon
Back in the days when finishing high school, much less college, was a thing of
beauty that demonstrated a strength of determination and hard work, a startling
statement that “I finished in the top 10 in my class” (not the top 10% mind you)
was cause for excitement for anyone.
So it was, when I sat down to talk with Lee Hacker, the resident property manager
and member of the Board for Churchill Estates. Oh, but wait, I failed to mention
what else Lee said, “there were only 10 in my class...”
Lee Hacker,
Still, Jamesy Leland (Lee) Hacker has been at the top of his game, in fact many
games for many years. Born and raised in Hart, TX, a small town north of Lub- CEHA Property Manager
bock, he did his early-years’ schooling there until he went to Baylor University
where he graduated in 1952. Following that, he matriculated at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary,
while holding a job at Swift & Company meat packers, to make ends meet.
Churchill Estates
A NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS PUBLICATION
During this time, he met his soon-to-be wife, Jerri; they were married in 1953.
After graduation from Southwestern, and looking to start a career, he worked at Waco State Home for orphaned children.
The urge to further his education was prominent in Lee, and Jerri’s, mind; she was an R.N. So he went back
to school, to the University of Texas at Austin, to study for, and eventually earn, a Master of Science degree in
Social Work, after which he worked at the Settlement Club Home in Austin, where he was the children’s director for 5 years.
The Lena Pope Children’s Home in Ft. Worth was Lee and Jerri’s next stop; they stayed at the Home for 11
years, where he developed countless programs to help youngsters. After that, he moved to San Antonio where
he worked at the Baptist Children’s Home for 13 years. It was here he developed a program, horse therapy,
which “matched a child’s need for love with a horse’s ability to offer love and kindness.” Later, he accepted a position as a therapist at Laurel Ridge Treatment Center. His last “gig,” before retirement was at Boysville, where
he continued his program of horse therapy.
Lee and Jerri moved to Churchill Estates in 1995 and Jerri passed away two years later. Lee and Jerri’s family
includes two children, Brad and Robin, and now there are five grandchildren.
Throughout his career, Lee has inspired children to far greater heights than they ever imagined they could
reach. And now he is on the receiving end of inspiring calls from his young “charges,” a few of whom call him
almost daily for pep talks and the like.
His sense of pride in Churchill Estates, his home for 19 years, is prominent in Lee’s mind, and body. He has
held the position of Property Manager for ‘lo these many years, a man we often see around the neighborhood
checking out the stone entrances, colorful flowers or sprinkler heads. And often he’s with ‘Lil Dude, his cute
as ever dog.
Continued good health, Lee.

members. The 2014 annual meeting is Wednesday, December 3 at 7:00 PM in the
upstairs conference room at St. Andrew Lutheran Church.
Homeowners in Churchill Estates receive an annual meeting announcement in the mail before Thanksgiving that contains the
proposed budget, the meeting agenda and a proxy. The proxy is
for you to complete and mail in if you cannot attend the meeting
in person. The proxy gives you the opportunity to ask someone
else who IS attending to vote on your behalf. Either write in the
name of Denise Griffin, our secretary, in the blank space in the
first paragraph, or write in the name of someone else you know
who plans to attend.
Churchill Estates residents are invited to participate
in our annual holiday lights contest. Judging will take
place on Sunday, December 14. Residents who have
won during the past three years will not be eligible
to win again, but we still encourage you to decorate.
Prizes are gift cards and they will be awarded on the
spot when the Holiday Lights Winner sign is placed
in your yard.
The signed proxies are due at our postal box at 13423 Blanco Rd.,
#288 by noon on Wednesday, December 3.
Our annual dues for 2015 are proposed to remain at $230 with a
discount of $10 (so that you owe $220) if you are in good standing and your payment is mailed by January 31. The 2015 dues
