Dedication of the Lateran
Basilica
"When he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he
had said this, and they came to believe." Jesus predicted his
resurrection in today's Gospel. But it wasn't until after the disciples
witnessed the miraculous event that they realized what he had been
talking about. At the time, Jesus' words seemed mysterious, even
confusing. Those who heard him understandably thought his reference
to "this temple" was about the Jewish house of worship. But it wasn't.
He was talking about his body. This only became clear later.
As the saying goes, "hindsight is twenty-twenty." How often do we
find ourselves in the midst of a situation that doesn't make sense at the
time? We question the "meaning" of a sickness, a lost job, a betrayal,
or a disappointment. But then, after time has passed, we can begin to
see it from another angle. In fact, many times we begin to see how
good came out of these tough situations. St. Paul says, "We know that
all things work for good for those who love God," (Rom 8:28).
Sometimes it's hard to trust in God's promises, especially when his
plan seems mysterious or confusing. But just as the disciples learned
that Jesus knew what he was talking about, we can believe that too.
He tells us that he is "the way and the truth and the life" (Jn 14:6).
Although the way may seem indirect, Jesus' perspective is bigger than
ours. He knows how to lead us to the fullness of life, in this world and
the next. The path may not be one that we would choose. Even Jesus
had to journey through the cross before his resurrection-the temple of
his body was destroyed before it was rebuilt. But looking back, it's
obvious that God's plans really do work out for the best.

You Did It For Me
The humanitarian crisis facing families in Iraq is unimaginable.
People of all faiths have been slaughtered and more than
1.2 million have fled in fear of the extremist group, the “Islamic
State,” that has committed heinous atrocities in the region.
Catholic Relief Services is supplying needy families with food,
water, shelter, and other essentials for daily life. But refugees
need long-term solutions and the region needs lasting peace.

HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION
You are God’s building.
According to the grace of God given to me,
like a wise master builder I laid a foundation,
and another is building upon it.
But each one must be careful how he builds upon it,
for no one can lay a foundation other than the one
that is there, namely, Jesus Christ. (1 Cor 3:9c-11)
Today is the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran
Basilica in Rome. One might ask why we have a feast
for the dedication of a building?
St. John Lateran is the Pope’s church. Many people
mistakenly think that St. Peter’s is the “Pope’s
church.” However, St. John Lateran is the cathedral
church of the Diocese of Rome. And, since the Pope is
the head of the universal Church, St. John Lateran is our
cathedral church as well.
Additionally, today is the 76th birthday of Bishop Dale J.
Melczek. Please keep him in your prayers. May God
bless him richly this day as he continues to serve the
people of the Diocese of Gary. We thank God for the gift
that he has been for our diocese and ask God’s
blessings upon him as he looks ahead to the next stage
of his life.
As important as any building may be, this feast reminds
us of the crucial reality that you and I are “Church” as
well. We are the living stones upon which the Church of
Christ is built. As living stones, we must be planted firmly
upon Jesus Christ, our foundation and our cornerstone.
May God’s grace and love be upon us this day!
FAITH ACTION: Pray for the bishop of the Universal
Church, Pope Francis, that God continue to bless him as
he guides Christ’s Church here on earth.
Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to
Your shepherd, Pope Francis, a spirit of courage
and right judgement, a spirit of knowledge and
love.
By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his
care may he, as successor to the apostle Peter
and vicar of Christ, build Your church into a
sacrament of unity, love, and peace for all the
world.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your
Son, Who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever
and ever. Amen.
Our school students have been working
very hard on this year’s fall musical:
Disney’s Peter Pan, Jr.
We hope you can join us Thursday, Friday, or Saturday,
November 20-22 at 7:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium.
Come and bid your cares goodbye . . . You can fly, you can
fly, you can fly!
FORTY HOURS
Coming sooner than you would think,
November 23-25 are the dates for our annual
Forty Hours devotions.
Each morning, after the last Mass, the
Eucharist will be left exposed on the altar in
the church for adoration.
It is very important that the Eucharistic Lord exposed on
the altar never be left unattended. Please try to come some
time during the day dwell in the presence of the Lord as well
as to pray before the Lord.
Each evening, at 7:00 p.m., we will have services that
include a talk from our Forty Hours presenter.
The speaker at this year’s Forty Hours will be Fr. Ed
Tlucek, OFM, the pastor of Holy Name Church in Cedar
Lake. Fr. Tlucek has a wit and a wisdom that appeals to
many people and I am confident that you will go home each
evening with a renewed sense of the wonder and glory of
God.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
A customer was shopping for a turkey for Thanksgiving
Day but couldn’t find one big enough. The customer asked
an employee, “Do these turkeys get any bigger?”
The employee looked a bit confused and then answered
as seriously as possible, “No. They can’t get any bigger.
They’re dead.”
PLEASE REMEMBER THEM
Please pray for the priests and deacons who
have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully
and whose anniversaries of death are this
week:
November 10: Rev. Ben Domsich (1994)
November 11: Rev. John B. Schaeffer (1975)
Bishop Andrew G. Grutka, D.D. (1993)
November 13: Rev. Mark Pesch, OFM (1985)
