NO HOLDS BARRED
By M.A. SADANAND
Dream come true!
I had been a dreamer all my life but the one that I had
at sunrise in my palatial house ‘Padmalayam’ in the village
in Kannur was so surreal that I unreservedly rejected it as
unhappenable but, with a hope that if Hitler could go mad,
my mother, made of sterner stuff than Hitler’s composition, could brave the journey from Nairobi to somewhere
in India across the Arabian sea and reach us. This was the
dream that catapulted me from bed.
For aeleven-year old, bed is heaven until disturbed.
Mother had set sail in a country craft from Africa with
my younger brother who was about 8, as steamers were
busy carting war materials and soldiers and the hope of
escape from Africa was dwindling day by day. Mother’s
bravery was seconded by father whom his British bosses
would not let go when Hitler was hitting them badly for
sixes. So Amma and Kanthu, my brave brother, trusted
wind power and sailed India wards reaching Kathiawar in
Gujarat after nearly a month. Two huge tins of her special
heavenly biscuits brought for her three children cooped up
in Kannur saved the two from starvation as the sail boat
had provision for less than 15 days only.
From Kathiawar it was cattle class train to Bombay and
a repeat class from Bombay to Madras from where mother
telegraphed us which reached us through the telegramrunner Nambiar ten minutes after mother and brother
reached home to a teary welcome by us all.
That night the four children and mother cried, cried and
cried, and pledged never to separate from each other.
In that family of father, mother and four children, I, at
81, am the sole survivor now. I here by declare a war on
wars.

‘Bone and Joint’ camp on Nov. 15 for persons suffering from
such problems. Patients can also take a free bone density test
which will help them to assess their bone condition. Special
discounts will be offered to persons detected with problems
that need further treatment.
Its founder Dr. Jayashree said that joints are indispensable
in our bones and are an integral part of our system. Freedom
and flexibility to move is perhaps the most important aspect
of the body.
With age, the space between the bones and joints reduce as
the lubrication begins to dry up. This leads to compressions on
the nerves and the blood vessels passing to both the sides
causing chronic and acute pain depending on the level of
compression and location of the nerves. If left uncared for, it
can lead to severe complications and inhibit even daily activities like walking, lifting, moving or even sleeping in certain
angles.
Allopathic intervention in extreme cases includes surgical
intervention and lifelong intake of pain killers which cause
chronic side effects.
Ayurveda unlike allopathy is devoid of side effects. A localized oil therapy is done along with massage, fomentation and
medicines to boost the immune system and strengthen the
bones. It provides a lasting relief and in many cases will not
even need surgical interventions.
Its contact numbers are 99620 64381 and 2345 8181.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
An act of nobility
Sir, I am a senior citizen fending for myself and residing on 7th Avenue,
Ashok Nagar.
On Oct. 15 at about 9.30 p.m, after making some purchases, I was
struggling along Murthy Street on the way back home with 3 heavy
bags. It had been raining heavily and roads were wet and slippery.
Looking at my plight, a gentleman stopped his car and offered to drop
me home. He was with his wife and I was initially reluctant and even
suspicious. He convinced me that his intention was only to help and
safely dropped me home.
Even before I could thank him and get his number or invite him home,
he just smiled and drove off. I just want to thank him and good
Samaritans like him through your paper. – C.N. Madhava Rao,
Ashok Nagar.
Aadhar processing should be handed
back to UIDAI
Sir, This refers to the recent announcement in the media regarding
setting up of Aadhaar camps by the Department of Census Operations
in Chennai and elsewhere in the State to cover the uncovered population under the scheme.
It must be stated that so long as the enrolment was done by the
Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), its original visionary,
through the nationalized banks and other agencies, it was a very
smooth affair. Once it was made known by the erstwhile dispensation
at the Centre that Aadhaar card was must to avail of the benefits under
various schemes of the government, particularly the LPG subsidy, all
hell broke loose and there was panic among the public who ran helterskelter to obtain the Aadhaar cards. It was during this time that the
Census Department took over the issue of Aadhaar cards based on the
National Population Register. There was a total pell-mell at all camps
hurriedly set up the Census Department in association with the civic
body in the city. It was organized without proper planning and training
to the staff and volunteers. No information was furnished at the
centers which were managed by outside agencies that were not
properly trained in the mechanisms. Even those who had obtained
UIDAI-enabled cards were asked to enroll afresh. Many of the Aadhaar
cards printed had factual errors and many were without correct
address and were lying in post offices. A few post offices had to announce
in the newspapers, calling upon the applicants to pick up the cards after
showing identity proof. The citizens heaved a sigh of relief after the
intervention of the Apex Court which ruled that Aadhaar card should
not be made mandatory to avail benefits of government schemes. I
wonder why again the Department is starting this exercise all over
again. The best way to go is to hand over the project back to UIDAI
which should implement the scheme like it had accomplished earlier
successfully. – V.S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar
Coconut tree on Natesan Road
junction poses danger
Sir, The trunk of a tall coconut tree at the
junction of Dr. Natesan Road and J.S. Kannappar Street (Ashok Nagar) is leaning towards the road. Coconuts from it often fall on
the road, posing a danger to road users. I had a
narrow escape recently when a coconut fell
just a few inches away from me while I was
passing by. I request the concerned authorities
to visit the spot and, if possible, cut down the
tree. – K. Alavandar, Ashok Nagar
Portion of walkers’ path in
Corporation park caves in
Sir, The entire width of a 10 foot-stretch of
the walkers’ path in the Corporation Park
adjoining Vidyodaya School, T. Nagar caved in
a couple of weeks ago. It is yet to be repaired.
Regular walkers are unable to use the path.
I hope the concerned authorities take immediate action to restore the path. – S.

Resident erects temporary shelter for
stray dog and its pups
By Our Staff Reporter
A resident constructed a temporary shelter for a pregnant
stray dog which later gave birth
to seven puppies on the pavement near his house on
Bazullah Road (T. Nagar).
He said that two of the puppies died within 24 hours.
He said that a few days before the delivery, the dog started
wailing and looking for shelter
as it was raining incessantly.
Taking pity, he erected a small
temporary shelter on the pavement with a plastic sheet as
roof to give it protection from
the rains. “I also placed some
bricks covering the shelter so
that the puppies don’t wander
out,” he added.

There is epidemic of conjunctivitis in Chennai since the recent rains. It is commonly
known as ‘Madras Eye’.
Also called as pink eye, it is
an inflammation of the conjunctiva (the outermost layer
of the eye and the inner surface
of the eyelids). It is commonly
due to an infection (usually viral, but sometimes bacterial)
or an allergic reaction.
An onset of sore throat and/
or common cold along with redness in the eye is an indication
of conjunctivitis. In its advanced state, symptoms include excessive watering and
itching.
Typically, symptoms develop first in one eye, but may
spread to the other eye within
2-5 days.
Bacterial conjunctivitis also
produces a yellowish discharge that may cause the lids to
stick together, especially after
sleep.
Often conjunctivitis is misread by patients as irritation
caused by a foreign body in the
eye.
Prevention and treatment:
1. Hygiene: The best effective prevention is hygiene and
not rubbing the eyes by infected hands.
It spreads only when objects
touched by the infected person
such as towels, soap, door
knobs, keys, remote controls,
laptops, keyboards etc., are
used by others.
Infected persons should not
touch their eye and preferably
wear goggles to prevent the
itch to touch/rub the eyes and
also to reduce glare. It is a myth
that Madras Eye spreads if an
infected person looks at another person!
2. Quarantine: In addition,
patients should stay away
from crowds and work to minimize spread of the infection. It
is better not to send affected
children to the schools.
3.) Eye check-up: Patients
should not self-medicate and
see an eye doctor immediately
as certain cases lead to corneal involvement and some
other serious vision threatening causes.
4.) Healthy foods: Eating
brightly coloured fruits and
vegetables helps to build im-
munity and prevents infection.
