Page 4 November 8 - 14, 2014 TAMIL CINEMA 75 A LOOK BACK Madras Eye – Cause, symptoms, prevention and treatment By RANDOR GUY G. RAMANATHAN - 17 ‘Thookku Thookki’ had eleven songs in all and these were written by Udumalai Narayana Kavi, Thanjai Ramaiah Dasand A. Marudhakasi. G. Ramanathan rose to great heights with this film and never did he look back.As already noticed, Udumalai Narayana Kavi landed in Madras (now Chennai) only on the morning of the day scheduled for song composing and he was available only for that day, having to go back to Coimbatore by the same night by Blue Mountain Express because he had prior commitments to fulfil in that city. Ramanathan took it as a challenge and set to work from the early morning. Udumalai Narayana Kavi wrote the lyrics for five songswhich were set to music by Ramanathan immediately, and T. M .Soundararajan sang four of them. Those were also recorded at the same time during the day because the famed poet wished to hear how his lines had come out as a song and more to see how the comparatively new singer had sung them! It was an amazing feat of talent, hard work, skills, discipline and such factors of all concerned. Ramanathan was already a master movie composerand T. M. Soundararajan was not yet a star but the success of this film and the songs would make him a top singing voice among the-behind-the-screen playback singers of Tamil Cinema till the end of his life…. He became the singing voice for Sivaji Ganesan, M. G. Ramachandranand other top stars of Tamil Cinema. Somewhat interestingly, Sivaji Ganesan’s earlier songs had been rendered off the screen by Chidambaram S. Jayaraman and some of them, like ‘Vinnodum mugilodum….’ in themovie ‘Pudhayal’, had become hits. However, R. M. Krishnaswamy (RMK), the producer-director of ‘Thooku Thookki’, was a tough guy and convinced Sivaji Ganesan to accept the new voice of TMS. RMK, known as ‘Murattu’ Krishnaswamy, was easily able to get the nod from Sivaji Ganesanbecause Sivaji knew his director well and dared not defy him! As the events proved, the songs rendered by Soundararajan became super hits and Sivaji Ganesan was delighted with the voice and from that day onwards TMS was his singing voice in all his movies. Of all the songs rendered by TMS for Sivaji Ganesanin this film, ‘Kurangilirindhu pirandhavan manithan’ became the most famous and alsoone of the memorable tunes of Tamil Cinema, remembered, heard and hummed by moviegoers around the world to this day. Such was the impact of the song’s melody that the meaningful lyrics, rendering by Soundararajan and, of course, the brilliant performance on-screen for this song by Sivaji Ganesan all created Tamil movie history. Other singers for this film wereP. Leela, M. S. Rajeswari, A. P. Komala and M.L. Vasanthakumari who was then active in off screen singing. The duet ‘Kanvazhi pughundhu’ rendered by Rajeswari along with Soundararajan, with lyrics written by A. Marudhakasi, also became popular. Another unusual song which had ‘Sowcarpet Tamil’ mixed with Hindi words, ‘Pyaree nimbal meley namki majaa’ (the beginning of this song is rendered as a ‘gazal!), a duet filmed on T. S. Balaiah and his mistress, a married woman (Lalitha), was rendered off screen by Rajeswari and Chellamuthu (nothing is now known about him) who sings for Balaiah. Another song written by Udumalai Narayana Kavi rendered by TMS, popularly known as the sari song, ‘pudavai paaatu, also became popular. ‘Thookku Thookki’ was a fabulous success and gave RMK a huge fortune which kept him happy in his later days when he had virtually retired from movie production. (To be continued) By Dr. Vasumathy Vedantham There is epidemic of conjunctivitis in Chennai since the recent rains. It is commonly known as ‘Madras Eye’. Also called as pink eye, it is an inflammation of the conjunctiva (the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids). It is commonly due to an infection (usually viral, but sometimes bacterial) or an allergic reaction. An onset of sore throat and/ or common cold along with redness in the eye is an indication of conjunctivitis. In its advanced state, symptoms include excessive watering and itching. Typically, symptoms develop first in one eye, but may spread to the other eye within 2-5 days. Bacterial conjunctivitis also produces a yellowish discharge that may cause the lids to stick together, especially after sleep. Often conjunctivitis is misread by patients as irritation patients should stay away from crowds and work to minimize spread of the infection. It is better not to send affected children to the schools. 3.) Eye check-up: Patients should not self-medicate and see an eye doctor immediately as certain cases lead to corneal involvement and some other serious vision threatening causes. 4.) Healthy foods: Eating brightly coloured fruits and vegetables helps to build immunity and prevents infection. Dr. Vasumathy Vedantham is the Medical Director of Radhatri Nethralaya (12, Hindi Prachara Sabha Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 2433 2229). LETTERS TO THE EDITOR An act of nobility Sir, I am a senior citizen fending for myself and residing on 7th Avenue, Ashok Nagar. On Oct. 15 at about 9.30 p.m, after making some purchases, I was struggling along Murthy Street on the way back home with 3 heavy bags. It had been raining heavily and roads were wet and slippery. Looking at my plight, a gentleman stopped his car and offered to drop me home. He was with his wife and I was initially reluctant and even suspicious. He convinced me that his intention was only to help and safely dropped me home. Even before I could thank him and get his number or invite him home, he just smiled and drove off. I just want to thank him and good Samaritans like him through your paper. – C.N. Madhava Rao, Ashok Nagar. Aadhar processing should be handed back to UIDAI Sir, This refers to the recent announcement in the media regarding setting up of Aadhaar camps by the Department of Census Operations in Chennai and elsewhere in the State to cover the uncovered population under the scheme. It must be stated that so long as the enrolment was done by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), its original visionary, through the nationalized banks and other agencies, it was a very smooth affair. Once it was made known by the erstwhile dispensation at the Centre that Aadhaar card was must to avail of the benefits under various schemes of the government, particularly the LPG subsidy, all hell broke loose and there was panic among the public who ran helter-skelter to obtain the Aadhaar cards. It was during this time that the Census Department took over the issue of Aadhaar cards based on the National Population Register. There was a total pell-mell at all camps hurriedly set up the Census Department in association with the civic body in the city. It was organized without proper planning and training to the staff and volunteers. No information was furnished at the centers which were managed by outside agencies that were not properly trained in the mechanisms. Even those who had obtained UIDAIenabled cards were asked to enroll afresh. Many of the Aadhaar cards printed had factual errors and many were without correct address and were lying in post offices. A few post offices had to announce in the newspapers, calling upon the applicants to pick up the cards after showing identity proof. The citizens heaved a sigh of relief after the intervention of the Apex Court which ruled that Aadhaar card should not be made mandatory to avail benefits of government schemes. I wonder why again the Department is starting this exercise all over again. The best way to go is to hand over the project back to By Our Staff Reporter UIDAI which should impleVijay Human Service (Sathya Garden, 29, P. V. Rajamannar ment the scheme like it had Salai, K. K. Hygiene: The best effective prevention is hygiene and not rubbing the eyes by infected hands. It spreads only when objects touched by the infected person such as towels, soap, door knobs, keys, remote controls, laptops, keyboards etc., are used by others. Infected persons should not touch their eye and preferably wear goggles to prevent the itch to touch/rub the eyes and also to reduce glare. It is a myth that Madras Eye spreads if an infected person looks at another person! 2. Patients can also take a free bone density test which will help them to assess their bone condition. Special discounts will be offered to persons detected with problems that need further treatment. Its founder Dr. Jayashree said that joints are indispensable in our bones and are an integral part of our system. Freedom and flexibility to move is perhaps the most important aspect of the body. With age, the space between the bones and joints reduce as the lubrication begins to dry up. This leads to compressions on the nerves and the blood vessels passing to both the sides causing chronic and acute pain depending on the level of compression and location of the nerves. If left uncared for, it can lead to severe complications and inhibit even daily activities like walking, lifting, moving or even sleeping in certain angles. Allopathic intervention in extreme cases includes surgical intervention and lifelong intake of pain killers which cause chronic side effects. Ayurveda unlike allopathy is devoid of side effects. A localized oil therapy is done along with massage, fomentation and medicines to boost the immune system and strengthen the bones. It provides a lasting relief and in many cases will not even need surgical interventions.
