On Halloween, Cadets were treated with a special Astronomy class which began with a summary of unit 2
(asteroids) and began Unit 3, Stars. Our discussion began with a lengthy discussion on Nebulas and how
stars become stars along with the difference between stars and planets. The class ended with the beginning
of Fusion and Hydrostatic Equilibrium. In this months Astronomy class, Cadets will be learning about fusion,
why the sun has multiple magnetic fields, solar rotation as well as flares and then lastly the solar wind. Unit 3
is by far the longest of the Units as the Sun is a complex engine and one that includes the fundamentals of
physics. In December we begin the second to last unit, which is the study of galaxies before ending with Earth
and the future of space travel.

We received a very nice thank you and WELL DONE from the Combat Information Chief at the 601 Air and Space Operations
Center for our quick and diligent work to get the word out about the short notice VIP TFRs this month in the Chicago area. The
numbers bore out our success. The number of Targets of Interest was down 87.5% per day compared to when an outreach is not
done and the number of air intercepts was decreased by 75%. For those of you who may have been asking if our actions made a
difference the answer is an absolute YES. Thank you all for taking the time to serve your fellow citizens and members of the
aviation community by getting the word out about this most recent VIP TFR.
Thank You Team,
Andrew J. Welch, Major, CAP

Great media coverage of the Group 22 SAREX:
Search and Rescue Volunteers Train in Boone County
There's a downed helicopter somewhere outside of Belvidere and Jim Wresch and his team are in search for the fallen chopper and it's beacon.
This is just a drill, but Wresch says these exercises are crucial for when something real happens.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Fall Bivouac:
On October 24 through October 26, 2014 the fox valley cadets participated in their fall bivouac. Over 19 cadets and 4 seniors
helped make this a success. Cadets participated in team building exercises, hikes, cadence runs, touch football and at night
everyone's favorite, 'Capture the Flag". One cadet stated that, "it was a great time and I hope to do it again."
Special thanks to 1LT Cittadano for training on ground team formations. 2LT Upmeyer provided valuable SABC (Self Aid Buddy
Care) from AFMAN 10-100 such as basic life saving tips, combating heat illness and cold injuries and how to stop bleeding.
Additionally cadets were introduced to the phonetic alphabet/prowords, radio procedure words, land navigation, map reading and
terrain feature identification.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Managing Power Loss on Takeoff"
Topic: The discussion will include planning for emergencies on takeoff and training to handle power loss at low altitudes.
On Thursday November 6, 2014 at 19:00 Central Standard Time
Location:
LEWIS UNIVERSITY
One University Parkway
Harold E. White Aviation Center
Romeoville, IL 60446
Description:
ACCIDENT PREVENTION
MANAGING POWER LOSS ON TAKEOFF
November 6, 2014, 7:00 P.M. at Lewis University
The Chicago Designated Pilot Examiners Association will have several Pilot Examiners present useful information on how to
prevent, or when necessary, manage power loss on takeoff. We will include Preflight Risk Assessment, Aeronautical Decision
Making and the flight techniques required in the event of engine failure on takeoff. Recent accidents and personal
experiences of the Examiners themselves will be discussed. Audience participation is most valuable on this subject and will
be encouraged. We can all learn from the experiences of others. The importance of a detailed preflight briefing on the
takeoff and actions to be taken in the event that something goes wrong will be covered. Making the selection of
appropriate landing sites and what decision to make at different altitudes can save lives and property.
This event will be attended by the students and instructors at the University. All local pilots, students and instructors will be
welcome, and should gain useful insights into practicing and teaching effective takeoff planning and emergency landings.
We hope you will attend and share this notification with others.
