A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY
READINGS HIS WORD TODAY
by Rev. William J. Reilly
The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
November 9, 2014
“You are God’s building. Thanks to the favor God
showed me I laid a foundation as a wise masterbuilder might do, and now someone else is building upon it. Everyone, however, must be careful
how he builds. No one can lay a foundation other
than the one that has been laid, namely Jesus
Christ…Are you not aware that you are the
temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in
you?”
The church we reflect upon today, a major basilica in
Rome, is called ‘the mother of all the churches of
Rome and the world.’ It has a special place in the history of the church.
We move from a physical building and are reminded
by St. Paul that we too are temples of the Spirit. We
are God’s dwelling among His people. The words of
John’s gospel ‘and the Word became flesh and He
dwelt among us’ speak not only of Mary and the
Incarnation, but also of the reality, that God lives in
and among us.
How meaningful as we read these words is the fact
that the person sitting and praying next to us, is a
temple of God’s Spirit. How challenging for us to
recognize the presence of the Lord in those of our
family, those with whom we work. How beautiful we
are as we reflect with Paul that ‘I live, now, not I, but
Christ lives in me.’
As I spend time in prayer, whether in a magnificent
cathedral or humble chapel, the fact is that the Lord is
present and that is what really matters. As I spend
time with family and friends, and recognize the
presence of the Lord in every individual that is what
really matters. The next time I pass a church, may I
remember that His dwelling is there and also with
me. In the words of Oscar Romero, Christ is the
Master builder, we are the ministers.
If you or a loved one are ill or
hospitalized and would like to be
remembered in prayer please
complete the form below and return
to the parish office. You or your loved
one will be added to our

FAITH AND YOUR FAMILY: How to Make Sunday Holy
Keeping Sundays holy does not mean that you have to completely change your lifestyle. If your job requires that you
work on Sunday, you don’t have to quit. Instead, try to incorporate the holiness of the day into whatever you do; try to
set aside some time during the day to reflect on God. If your family members are sports fans, turning off the TV or
refusing tickets to a game would only create resentment and could actually turn people away from God. The key is to
look at sports as a form of rest and recreation which allows you to appreciate God’s gift of athletic ability. If you’re
invited to the theater or some special performance on Sunday, it’s not wrong to go. Be grateful to God and enjoy
yourself. But, remember to do ALL things for the glory of God! To Him goes ALL the glory!
Defending Our Religious Liberty Pope Francis has emphasized that “religious freedom is not simply freedom
of thought or private worship. It is the freedom to live according to ethical principles, both privately and publicly.”
If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the mandate by calling President Obama at the White
House at 202-456-1111 or U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell at 202-205-5445.
Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom.
