We still have Thanksgiving and Christmas
to celebrate. And that is exactly why this brief article is being written. We are having an
Epiphany Celebration at St Peter’s on January 4, 2015. This is something that has not
been done in recent history. So we want to let you know about it before all the
distractions of the holidays begin. Epiphany is the celebration of the Magi, who came
to celebrate the manifestation of Christ to the world. The holiday is rich with tradition
and symbolism. Many of those traditions will be celebrated during worship service.
But there are some differences in the way things are going to be done.

First of all there will be only ONE service! It will be from 9:30 to 10:30.

Worship will be followed by a brunch smorgasbord of traditional as well as
foods representative of the ethnic heritage of St. Peter’s congregants. For example,
some folks of Norwegian heritage will bring lefse and perhaps some scrumptious
meatballs. There will be a sign up sheet in the Narthex the last three Sundays of
December for the food you would like to bring. We also need a few volunteers to
help with serving, setting up and cleaning up. So please visit our sign up table in the
narthex. But most of all make plans to attend the First Annual Epiphany Festival and
Smorgasbord. It promises to be a meaningful and fun experience.

Our Children Are Watching
Submitted by Don Burke
Children watch their parents and they do what they see them doing. This is how
they learn to speak. They watch how their parents cross their legs, how they fold their hands,
how they stand and sit and walk.
We are the children of God by grace, through faith. In Holy Baptism, God the
Father declares of us what He declared of Jesus at His Baptism in the Jordan, “You are my beloved Son, in whom I
am well pleased.” God the Father claims us as His own. He takes away all our sins, and in exchange He gives us His
righteousness, His purity, His holiness, and His Spirit, by which we cry out, “Abba, Father.” We are born again,
born to a new life in Christ as His children. We are children of God in Christ, through Baptism. We are children,
we are heirs, heirs who share in the glory of the Son of God. The inheritance is ours because of the Father’s
grace and mercy, in sending His Son in time to save us for all eternity.
And this is why we give generously of our income to the work of the church. Through the working of
the Holy Spirit, we are enabled to lead holy lives. We are strengthened to emulate the generosity of our heavenly
Father by being generous ourselves. We give to the work of the church because we have witnessed the generous
giving of our Father in heaven. More than that, we are recipients of it. It is because we have received God our
Father’s gifts that we desire to give ourselves. And His gifts are not just spiritual. They are temporal and earthly as
well. As the Small Catechism teaches in the Fourth Petition of the Lord’s Prayer:
“Give us this day our daily bread. What does this mean? God certainly gives daily bread to everyone without
our prayers, even to all evil people, but we pray in this petition that God would lead us to realize this and to receive
our daily bread with thanksgiving. What is meant by daily bread? Daily bread includes everything that has to do with the
support and needs of the body, such as food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, home, land, animals, money, goods, a
devout husband or wife, devout children.
God gives us everything that we need for the care of both body and soul. His generosity knows no bounds.
Therefore we sit down at the beginning of the year, the beginning of the month, or the beginning of the
week, and set aside a generous portion of God’s daily bread for His work in the church. Not because He
has commanded us so to do. But rather because we, as His children by grace, want to emulate His
generosity in our own lives. He is our Father; we are His children. And children want to be like their parents.
Thanksgiving: Live your thankfulness this season
Each holiday season St. Peter’s Lutheran Church anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase
in contributions. It is through the donations of every individual and family in the congregation that
we are able to carry on our work now and throughout the year.
If you need a convenient way to make recurring contributions or plan to make an additional
gift before the end of the year, we encourage you to check out our electronic giving options. As the
pace of life speeds up around the holidays, you may find electronic giving a most welcome way to
make contributions.
To set up a recurring giving schedule, visit us online at www.splcmf.org and locate the Online
Giving button. Or if it's easier, complete a paper authorization form and return it to the church office.
Thank you for your generosity and support!

Bible Studies
Sunday Morning Sunday School :
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL: Our Adult Sunday School Class is attended mostly by older
adults, but ALL are welcome to join us each Sunday morning for lively discussion as we
delve into Bible study and growing our faith. We will continue “John: Written that YOU
May Believe.” This in-depth look at the fourth gospel will serve as an introduction to
the nuances of John, a comparison with the other gospel authors, and a catechism for
modern Christians. Come learn with us why John’s gospel was written so that we 21st century Christians
would “believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God” and “have life in his name” (John 20:31). The
Adult Sunday School Class is led by Nick Bohmann, Pastor Casey and Pastor Vanicek in Room 215 at 9:30 AM
Sundays.
KINGDOM SEEKERS: Kingdom Seekers is a group of younger adults who meet for Sunday School each
week at 9:30 AM and also meet for occasional fellowship activities throughout the year. Instead of running
errands or just hanging around the hallways while your kids are in Sunday School, join us for a cup of coffee
as we learn about our faith. Many of our Kingdom Seekers are parents, so we often reflect on faith from the
perspective of raising faithful children.
Come learn with us as we explore the Bible from a Lutheran perspective. Kingdom Seekers is led by
Pastor Casey and Greg Murrell in Room 212 at 9:30 AM Sundays. You can follow the Kingdom Seekers of St.
Peter’s at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Kingdom-Seekers-St-Peters-Lutheran-ChurchELCA/105991842875173 Please “Like” this page if you would like to receive updates via Facebook.
SPLAT SUNDAY SCHOOL: Meet Sunday mornings at 9:30am at the SPLAT House. See Page 7 for more
information.
MID-WEEK/Monthly Bible Studies:
HANDS OF GRACE: Meets Monday, November 10th in room 212. 5:30pm – Work on Prayer Blankets;
6:00pm—Bible Study.
MEN’S BYOBIBLE STUDY: All men are invited. We meet Monday, November 17th at 7:00pm at Double
Horn Brewing Co. We continue a new study of Philippians. Philippians is a letter from Paul to the
community of faith in Philippi. This community had supported Paul's ministry and Paul writes from prison to
reassure the community that his ministry continues despite his situation. This study uses four paradoxes as
lenses to look at Paul's letter: Individual Community, Joyful Suffering, Free Slave, & Downward Ascent.
WELCA BIBLE STUDIES: Thursday, November 13th at 10:00am is the Agape Bible Study at Jayne
Schoonmaker’s home. Thursday, November 20th at 1:00pm is the Deborah Circle at Shirley Bohmann’s
home. The Bible study is taken from the Gather magazine, located on the literature rack in the commons
area. “TRANSFORMATION TAKES TIME: Transforming Life and Faith” (John 20:30-31.) In this session, we will see
that for people in the Bible and for Christians today, growth in faith often takes time.
WOMEN’S ONLY WEEKLY (WOW) BIBLE STUDY: Join us for a WEEKLY women’s Bible study every
Wednesday from 9:30-11:30. The group will NOT meet during the month of November, but will begin again
on December 3rd. Join us as we explore Opening the Book of Faith. This book gives us Lutheran insights
for Bible Study and then walks us through various ways to study the Bible in community and
individually. For more information, please contact Pastor Casey or Carol Moquist at cjmoquist@gmail.com
or 281-216-9344.
New Prayer Shawl Ministry: Meets the third Tuesday of each month– November 18th—at 3:00pm in
room 212 for fellowship, knitting and crocheting shawls. They will then be blessed and distributed to the
sick and elderly in our church and community. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please contact
Carol Moquist at 281-216-9344.

School NEWs
St. Peter’s Lutheran School
October has been a busy and fun month at school as we studied the letter “D,”! We had a visit
from a therapy dog named Cooper and “Donuts with Dad” was a yummy success! Firefighters
taught the children about fire safety and treated us all to a good look at their gear and a fire
truck! On another day, children, parents, and staff enjoyed a visit to the Pumpkin Patch. We
also got to have a Pizza & Popcorn Picnic during ”P” week! Finally, we ended the month with a
celebration for Halloween! All this, plus learning, playing, experimenting, singing, moving … our
school is alive with growing children! Thanks be to God!
We have some fun events coming up, as well: a visit from some “Community Helpers,” a few Mystery Readers,
a gathering of Thanks canned food drive, and a Thanksgiving Play & Feast for our families.
Don’t forget! Take your family and friends to Double Horn Brewing Co. on Wednesday, November 19th!
10% of all proceeds will go directly to St. Peter’s School on that day!
The school is collecting Box Tops for Education this year. These are found on many items
in your pantry at home. Please clip, save, and put them in the “labeled box” in the Narthex.
Each box top is a dime to our school, so they really add up and can give us a nice amount of supplemental funds!
We appreciate the assistance!
All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
so that everyone who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17

Coping with Grief Support Group
Wednesday, November 5th through December 17th
1:00pm - 2:30pm in Room 212.
Facing the holidays can be difficult for those who are dealing with the emotional pain caused by the loss
of a loved one. Many questions come to the fore: Which traditions will be different this year? What will I miss
the most about not having my loved one here to celebrate with me? How can I best take care of myself to make
it through the next few weeks? To explore possible answers to those and other questions, a “Coping with Grief
Support Group” will meet at St. Peter’s. Arlis Schmidt LCSW - Emeritus will facilitate the group. Ms. Schmidt
is a retired licensed clinical social worker with several years of experience of working with groups. Please call
Ms. Schmidt at 210-326-7447 if you have questions or if you would like to participate in the group. All who are
dealing with the pain caused by the loss of a loved one are welcome.
Child Protection Policy Committee
In June, St. Peter’s adopted a Child Protection Policy and Handbook. It’s purpose is to provide the members
and staff of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and School guidance in providing a safe and secure environment for
preschoolers, children, and youth entrusted to our care. We do this to encourage those preschoolers, children,
youth, and their families to grow in their relationship with God and one another. The committee will have its first
general meeting in November (exact date and time to be announced). Please contact one of the pastors for
more information.
Please Note: The Child Protection Policy states that when taking pictures at Sunday school, church or school events, etc.
you are not to post or distribute the pictures of other children without the consent of their parents.

Study: The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk
You can purchase a copy at Amazon (hardback or Kindle version) if you’d like.
Sue Monk Kidd is the author of The Mermaid Chair and The Secret Life of Bees. Here’s a bit
about this story: Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given
ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over
the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies
and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love.
Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, Kidd goes beyond the record to flesh out the rich interior
lives of all of her characters, both real and invented, including Handful’s cunning mother, Charlotte, who
courts danger in her search for something better.
For more information, contact Pastor Casey.
The Book Club will be taking a break during the holiday months

Council Report
St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Council Meeting
Tuesday, September 16, 2014
The Church Council Meeting was called to order by Mary Ann Hefner at 5:30pm. Present at the meeting were
Mary Ann Hefner, Julie Causgrove, Faith Trapp, Jerry Bostick , Greg Murrell, Craig Magerkurth, Dave Leighton,
Richard Schroer, Pastor Casey and Pastor Vanicek.
Pastor Casey opened the meeting with a prayer and led a discussion centered on “Developing Leaders” from the
Power Surge book. Effective leaders are not born, they are made under the wise mentoring of an accomplished
leader. Under this leader, novice leaders flourish and grow. Much discussion followed.
The minutes of the August 19, 2014 meeting were presented and a motion to approve was made by Faith Trapp
and seconded by Greg Murrell. Motion passed.
The treasurer’s report was give by Dave Leighton. He reported that expenses are slightly greater than income
through the first 8 months. It was pointed out that giving this year was considerably lower in August as compared
to August 2013. A motion to approve the treasurer’s report was made by Richard Schroer and seconded by Faith
Trapp. Motion passed.
Pastor Casey and Pastor Vanicek both gave highlights of their July reports. Pastor Casey reported thanks to the
Fellowship Committee and all who came, participated and helped lead various projects for the God’s Work Our
Hands Sunday. Pastor Casey also wanted everyone on the church council to know that Deborah Vanicek is now
on the staff serving as an additional organist. New member Sunday is scheduled for September 28th and First
Communion is scheduled for October 19th. Pastor Vanicek reported that the SPLAT house remodel is moving
along and could be finished near the end of the month. Confirmation fall classes will begin Wednesday, September 17th. The Child Protection Policy Committee will meet soon.
Cindy Struchen reported on children and family ministry. Workshop “Disciples” and “Shepherds” were installed
on Rally Day. Coordinated fajita dinner for parents and students. Gal’s Night In tailgate party was a success with
16 in attendance. Twenty-six ladies attended the 3rd Women’s Retreat Getaway on September 20th-21st.
All staff complete reports are available upon request.
