President’s Message
D
ear brothers and sisters,
I would like to take a
moment to reflect on the
tragic events that happened in our
Nation’s Capital on October 22,
2014. First and foremost on behalf
of our executive and members I
offer our deepest condolences to
the family of Hamilton’s own Cpl.
Nathan Cirillo, a reservist serving
with the Argyll and Sutherland
Highlanders of Canada regiment,
whose life was taken that tragic day. It is a terrible reminder
that senseless violence and terrorism can happen anywhere,
even our great country of Canada. I find it ironic that as a result
of this cowardly act it also strengthens the very people, country,
and ideology they were diametrically opposed to. Our Country
and its people will forever be changed. The poppy will mean a
little more this year, I urge all our members to join us at this
year’s Memorial Mass so we can honour and remember our
fallen veterans; especially our very own Cpl. Nathan Cirillo.
Our annual Memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday,
November 9th at All Souls Church. A brunch will be provided
at our lodge hall following the mass. All are welcome to attend.
Congratulations to Sons of Italy FC teams on their soccer seasons
and representing the Sons of Italy with pride and distinction.

Marchese Pharmacy: A local success story
about Jack Marchese
W
hen I asked Jack about
his favourite proverb he
answered directly, “work.”
The Marchese family expressed this
virtue as a way of life. Jack’s parents came
from Racalmuto, Sicily. His father worked
in the local salt mine there as a teenager.
After emigrating to Hamilton, he worked
at the Cotton Mill, Coppley, Noyes and
Randall, and at Nick Corrado’s as a
pocket maker. The family took in borders
and when the Cotton Mill bought their
house on Simcoe Street for expansion,
his grandmother Concetta bought three
houses facing the CNR Station at 12,
14, and 16 Murray Street East. Nonna
Concetta, the widowed matriarch of the
family was a natural leader. Eventually
three of her children married and each
received one of these houses. Everyone
worked.
Life in the immigrant neighbourhood
revolved around family first and
foremost; Fr. Bonomi and All Soul’s
Church and the schools; St. Mary’s
and St. Augustine’s. He remembers his
grandmother collecting coins, 25 cent and
50 cent coins in particular, from family
members to send back to Racalmuto
because it was important to reach out
to family with care and help. He and his
sister were surrounded by family in a life
of care and traditional Sicilian virtues.
His father was always busy helping
others in the family or at work uptown.
His recreation was hunting and fishing.
Calogera, his mother, was the source of
nourishment for the family (née Cicero)
ever to be found in the kitchen.
Jack Marchese celebrating 25 years as 'farmacista." (1961–1986)
Jack smiles when he remembers her as
a talented cook superb at baking bread,
pastries and desserts. He learned in his
heart from his parents, there was nothing

Marchese Pharmacy: A local success story
about Jack Marchese
And so Jack attended St. Mary’s where the
Sisters of St. Joseph were his teachers and
guides, then Cathedral and McMaster
where he graduated with a B.A. in
Science. Summers he always worked;
Dominion Glass, International Harvester
and Stelco. He had a clear sense of
purpose which was to earn his way for his
next year of university. After graduation
he worked at Slater Steel for two years
and then headed back to the University
of Toronto in a four year couse (19541958) in Pharmacy. After graduation he
came back to his community to work
for his mentors: Chester Capponi and
Phil Farrauto at Barton and Sherman.
Another local successful son was
returning to serve the immigrant Italians
in the neighbourhood shortly after the
war. They spoke Italian; they knew the
Sicilian dialect; they respected age-old
customs and expectations. They worked
closely with the doctors along Barton
Street: Dr. Rizzo, Dr. Agro and Dr.
Spicuzza.
Jack worked for Chester and Phil for
3 years (1958-1961) and on June 5th,
1961 he opened Marchese Pharmacy
just north of Barton on James St. North
to serve the Italian people of All Souls –
his childhood neighbourhood, a block
from where he grew up. At 316 James
North he would spend 9am to 9pm every
day of the week for the next 3 years. It
was a slow start; deliveries were made
by bicycle. Work was a virtue he knew
and believed in. He respected the value
of perseverance and self-reliance from

his family. Gradually he introduced
imports from Italy, personal care items,
household products and eventually a
whole range of wine-making products.
He knew instinctively the answer to the
question: “How does the olive tree grow?”
Jack rented that pharmacy store from
Nick Zaffiro and remained there for 28
years (1961-1989). In that period, he
was a trusted pharmacist, a healthcare
server and a reliable friend for many;
they came to him for advice for their
family’s health, for their wine-making
and even for help with their taxes; in the
1970s he made house calls to organize
their medications and one occasion he
accompanied two Italian immigrant
brothers who needed help with their
forms at the Banker College in Toronto.
Jack Marchese: “farmacista e factotum”
Marita Zaffiro worked as a pharmacist
with Jack (1987-1989) and eventually
bought the business and kept the name.
In 1972 Jack started another pharmacy
around Barton and Birch called “Medical
Pharmacy.” His retirement came in 2000
after 42 years of service in the pharmacy.
The years were not without personal
tragedy; his wife Jean (née Fratese) died
of cancer, 1931-1994 (Riposa in Pace).
Her passing made him consider how
fortunate he was to have a supportive
and talented partner throughout his
career. He speaks of his memories
with that even-minded judgment and
acceptance inherited from his ancestors.

Jack will tell you in that direct and
thoughtful manner: family values last
a lifetime; the deep values of family
last a lifetime and that the loyalty and
support of his fellow Italian immigrants
were in large measure the reason for
his success. A clear sense of purpose
is basic to success in one’s vocation.
Listen to Jack about the merits of
intelligence and work: “I don’t care how
smart you are, if you’re not a worker,
you’re not going to succeed.” He admired
and imitated his father, Andrea’s work
ethic, his mother Calogera’s homemaking dedication; his Nonna Concetta’s
coin-collecting still resonates in his
memory. This is Jack (Gioacchino)
Marchese, a member of our brotherhood
for the past 54 years quietly talented; an
initiator of the Sons of Italy Housing
Corporation whose generosity for this
endeavour is a story in itself. Our brother,
our colleague, talented, plain-spoken,
direct, faithful and persevering! He’s a
successful professional in our midst whose
generous reach deserves our recognition.
Jack, a brother worth knowing and
worth remembering. “Labor Omnia
Vincit” – Work conquers all.

Donate to the Trieste Lodge this Season!
A
s many of you are now aware,
anyone is able to make a
charitable contribution to our
Sons of Italy Hamilton Trieste Lodge
Legacy Fund, set up with the Hamilton
Community Foundation (HCF), and
receive a charitable tax receipt. Please
keep your beloved lodge in mind if you
are contemplating making a charitable
donation before year end.
In addition to donating cash, the HCF
can facilitate a donation of stocks, bonds,
and other publicly listed securities
which may further reduce your tax bill
and provide more funds to the lodge.
If you have qualifying securities, which
may include stocks or bonds listed on
a designated stock exchange, eligible
mutual fund units or segregated funds
that have increased significantly in
value, consider donating them in-kind
directly to our fund through the HCF.
When you donate property to charity,
you are deemed to have received an
amount equal to the fair market value
of the property. If the fair market value
of the property exceed the cost, a capital
gain will be realized. However, the fair
market value of the qualifying securities
may be eligible for a tax credit, and any
realized capital gains are not taxable.
As a result of this special tax treatment,
it may be more beneficial to donate
qualifying securities directly to charity
than to sell the property and donate the
proceeds. Please consult your personal
tax and legal advisors regarding advice
for your particular circumstances.
indicating on the cheque that you
