To all our visitors…
Bishop John R. Gaydos, the clergy and the faithful of the Diocese of Jefferson City welcome you and hope that your time in
our Mother Church may be an opportunity to share our faith
and joy in Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our parish was formed in 1959 and was elevated to the title of
Cathedral in 1968 and dedicated in 1974. Please enjoy the beauty of this spacious building dedicated to the Glory of God and
the memory of Saint Joseph, the Husband of Mary. It was built
for the inspiration of all who enter. Free tour booklets are available.
All visitors who are not of the Roman Catholic faith are most
welcome to join us in prayer and worship, but not to receive Holy Communion. Reception of Holy Communion is a sign of full
unity and membership in the Catholic community. Together let
us all pray for the unity of all believers.
If you desire to become a member of the Roman Catholic
Church or to become a member of the Cathedral Parish, please
call the parish office at 573-635-7991.
All contributions to the Cathedral ministries and maintenance
are sincerely appreciated. Please remember this Cathedral parish
in your Last Will and Testament to support our parish’s ongoing
mission.

Holy Ground!
The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
November 9, 2014
THE VERB
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
by Msgr. Kurwicki
The Dedication of the Papal Archbasilica of The Most Holy Savior, St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist
at the Lateran in Rome: Each year on November 9, the Holy
Church recalls this solemn dedication. Most often, this Feast
passes with little notice. This year, however, November 9 falls
on a Sunday and the Feast will furnish us with beautiful Scriptures and prayers at the Mass. Why is this Feast so important
that it interrupts the normal Sunday cycle? The short answer is
two-fold.
WELCOME to all who gather in our Cathedral Church for the
Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, and our 54th
Annual Christmas Bazaar!
WEEK OF PRAYER: We ask each member of our Cathedral
parish to pray for the members of one of the parishes or missions in our diocese this week. As a Cathedral Church, all our
parishes are linked to us and we wish to deepen the spiritual
bond with them. Therefore, we will pray this week for St.
Martin, St. Martin’s.
The first is that the Dedication of this Roman Basilica celebrates the freedom of the Catholic Church in the Roman Empire
in 313. The Basilica is built on property that had been confiscated by the Emperor Nero from a noble Roman family who had
converted to Christianity when St. Peter was in Rome in 65.
Later the Emperor Constantine in 313 declared Christianity
legal and donated the site to the Pope together with the Laterani family
The second reason is because it is the Cathedral of the World.
While St. Peter’s is most closely associated with the Popes, St.
John Lateran holds the “Cathedra or Seat” as the Bishop of
Rome. “The Most Holy Church of the Lateran, the Mother and
Head of all the churches of the city and world!” Those words, in
Latin greet every pilgrim entering through the front door of
this Archbasilica and clearly proclaim the Lateran’s significance
in Christianity. The Lateran is the Mother of every church edifice because it was the first Christian basilica in history: it is the
head because Rome, the See of St. Peter, is the principal local
church in the world, and the Lateran is the principal church of
the Diocese of Rome. The Lateran, not the Vatican, is where
the Popes resided for the first millennium of legalized Christianity. Five councils of the church were held here and many
great Saints were pilgrims here including St. Francis of Assisi.
CONGRATULATIONS to Connor George and Hunter Nussbaum, who were baptized in the Cathedral last week!
FROM DEATH TO NEW LIFE-The Cathedral Parish
Family extends its sympathy and prayers to the families of
Mary Virginia Hemmel, Thomas Meyer and Betty Stokes.
May they have eternal rest in their heavenly home and may
the Lord give comfort to their loved ones who mourn their
loss.
COLD AND FLU SEASON - As the time of the year for colds
and flu is here, if you are ill, please be considerate of others at the
sign of peace and receiving the Blood of Christ.
PRAYER FOR OUR VETERANS
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the selfless service of
those who gave their lives to protect our nation, preserve
our freedoms, and restore peace in the face of brutal aggressors. Grant relief to those who continue to experience emotional or physical agony from their days of combat. Give us a sense of responsibility for their welfare.
Comfort those who mourn for loved ones who died while
performing their duty to our country. Enlist all who are in
our military forces into your church, that they may
pledge eternal loyalty to You, and know His peace. Amen
GROTTO STEPS
The wooden stairs from the undercroft parking lot to the statue
group of Our Lady of Fatima, after many years of faithful service, are no longer safe due to weather and age. It was suggested to replace them, but before we move further on this project,
Monsignor would like some input from the parishioners.
1. Should we keep them at the current location or is there a
better spot? 2. Should we think long term and replace the steps
with concrete steps and metal handrails?
Please email Msgr. Kurwicki at the parish office with your opinion at: stjosephb@catholicweb.com.
BAZAAR GRAND RAFFLE UPDATE
The raffle will be held today at the Christmas Bazaar
at approximately 6:00 p.m.
First prize is $5,000.00. Second prize $500.00. As
a parish, we have sold 978 tickets. That amounts to
$9,780.00!
4
This is the reason why on November 9 all members of the
daughter churches thoroughout the world celebrate the Feast of
the Dedication of the Head and Mother. St. John Lateran is, we
can say, the Cathedral of the World!
Finally, I recently came across this quote in a novel: Night
Train to Lisbon, by Pascal Mercier. Out of context, with the
author clearly having a different style of architecture in mind, it
is nevertheless an attractive and thought provoking passage on
this day that we recall the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
“I would not like to live in a world without Cathedrals. I need
their beauty and their grandeur. I need them against the vulgarity of the world. I want to look up at the illuminated church
windows and let myself be blinded by the unearthly colours. I
need their lustre. I need it against the dirty colours of the uniforms. I want to let myself be wrapped in the austere coolness of
the churches. I need their imperious silence. I need it against the
witless bellowing of the barracks yard and the witty chatter of
the yes-men. I want to hear the rustling of the organ, this deluge of etherial tones. I need it against the shrill farce of
marches. I love praying people. I need the sight of them. I need
it against the malicious poison of the superficial and the
thoughtless. I want to read the powerful words of the Bible. I
need the unreal force of their poetry. I need it against the
delapidation of the language and the dictatorship of slogans. A
world without these things would be a world I would not like to
live in.”
Thank you Veterans!

What a fantastic 40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil! We have completed 400 days of prayer and fasting in front of the Columbia
Planned Parenthood since September of 2009.
Only God knows how many lives have been affected by your
faithful prayer presence on the sidewalk, at home, or wherever
you may have been these past five years, as together we have
united as one body in Christ to pray for the end of abortion in
Columbia and in our state.

this time. We will resume collecting for Families in Need on
December 10. Thank you!
DYNAMIC BOOK ENVELOPES
The donors hope you received and read the Catholic books donated by our parishioners at Christmas and Easter the past few
years. Our desire is to make this an annual Christmas & Easter
Cathedral tradition. To do this the donors need your support.
These books are not purchased by the Cathedral but by people
just like you, the people in the pews that have been inspired by
reading these books.
In your tithe envelope packet, you will notice there is an extra
envelope designated for Dynamic Catholic Book Give-a-way.
Any amount you can provide will be greatly appreciated so that
we may continue this well received tradition. Thank you!
