WHAT OUR
STUDENTS SAY
Students past and present share
their experiences of their time
with us. Find out what they did,
what they liked most and what
they’ve gone on to do.
“I went to MK College due to the availability
of subjects which my school sixth form did
not provide. Alongside English Language and
Literature, I studied Psychology and Sociology
which I felt would be beneficial for my career
choice. Being in a college environment
helped me to become more independent and
motivated to do well in my A Levels. The tutors
were very supportive and encouraged me
to achieve my full potential. After successful
results, I went on to study a degree in Health
and Social Care at university, graduating with
a 2:1, and have spent the last year working in a
secure setting with young offenders.”
Amy Kirkland

“Studying at MK College has been one of the
most enjoyable educational experiences I have
had so far! The teaching quality is excellent.
My subjects are taught both in the classroom
and through various practical activities so I
get exposure to both sides. Also, it’s very easy
to get to with the use of regular local bus and
railway services near by.”

ABOUT OUR
A LEVEL PATHWAYS
We have a number of pathways that are designed to move you
a step closer to the career of your choice. Each pathway is a
unique package, focused on providing you with the key skills,

HOW THEY WORK
Each pathway has a focus on a distinct area, which will
determine the main subject for study. So be sure to choose

Once you have selected your pathway, you will then choose

will ensure you choose subjects that are most important for
your career goal. This in turn provides a key focus for tutorials,
enrichment activities and work experience, all the while
enhancing your employability skills and preparing you for your
next step.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EMPLOYERS
THE BENEFITS OF WORK EXPERIENCE
One of the best ways to increase your
employability skills and become more
attractive to employers is through work
experience. Offering you plenty of
benefits for progressing into your chosen
career, it’s certainly worth doing.
We work closely with local businesses and employers
to provide you with work placement opportunities and
employer-based activities, which in turn will give you an
insight into each industry.
“We have built excellent links with MK College over the years
and have been impressed with the law provision and the
enthusiasm the students show for the subject. We hope to
continue these links and further develop work opportunities
for the students”.
SOME OF THE EMPLOYERS WE WORK WITH INCLUDE:
Liz Harris, Practice Manager, Dentons
• Dentons (Law firm)
• Home Retail Group
• Pictons (Law firm)
• Santander
• The University of Northampton
• Thames Valley Police
Dentons is an international law firm with over 70 offices
worldwide. Dentons’ Milton Keynes office has worked in
partnership with MK College for a number of years, in a variety
of situations and has given our students fantastic
work placement opportunities.
“I have been pleased to engage with MK College A Level
Psychology students in a number of different settings.
The Psychology teaching at the College is imaginative and
engaging. A Level students not only enjoy a very enlightened
A Level programme, but are prepared well for University.
Annually students from the College present research material
in a conference setting. Their work is well-prepared and
thoughtful. Because of these excellent links with the College,
we intend to work more closely with College staff and
students in the future.”
Dr Graham Mitchell, Subject Lead for Psychology,
the University of Northampton
7
“We are pleased to be working with the College. Young
Enterprise provides a structure and support to enable teams to
set up and run their own companies throughout the academic
year. The teams will elect their own board of directors, select
their choice of product or service, raise their working capital,
pay taxes on their trading profits and can keep the profit
they make at the year-end. The structure enables them to
trade as a branch of Young Enterprise. The support comes
from engagement by a Centre Lead, usually a teacher and a
business advisor drawn from the local business community
who volunteers their time to attend weekly meetings and
mentor the team.”
PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
IN THE INDUSTRY YOU WANT
TO WORK IN
You can never really know what a
job entails until you’ve been working
practically in that role. A work placement
will give you the chance to put what
you’re learning into practice, develop
new skills and get an inside view of a
particular job so you’ll be better informed
when choosing your career.
DEVELOP KEY
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
BOOST YOUR CV AND IMPRESS
AT INTERVIEWS
Employers often want staff with strong
interpersonal skills. They want people
who will work well in a team and be
able to communicate effectively with
colleagues, customers and clients. You
will be able to gain experience of this
first-hand through a work placement.
Complement your qualifications with
practical experience and knowledge.
Because you’ve gained a better
understanding of the sector you
want to go into, you’ll be able to talk
more confidently at interviews and
ask questions that are relevant to
the employer.
HIGHER CHANCES OF
SECURING A PAID JOB
Performing well on work placements
can often lead to paid employment,
either part-time while you continue with
your studies or full-time after you have
completed your studies.
DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF IN A CROWDED MARKET
Employers value competitive advantage and that’s what work
experience gives you.
“If you take two applicants with equally good qualifications and
personal attributes but one has gained work experience and the other
hasn’t, the job will likely go to the person who has shown initiative and
gained real workplace experience.”
ROAD TEST AN ORGANISATION/
SECTOR/ROLE
One of the best things about gaining
work experience as a student is that it
gives you the chance to try things out
to see if they suit you. It will confirm
whether you want to continue on or
re-direct your energies into something
else, which we can help you to decide.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
The skills that you learn and refine on
a work experience placement will give
you a head start on your professional
development pathway and will play an
important part in helping you focus on
your own career goals and aspirations.
