Our Lady of Peace
FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
This coming Friday, November 21st we will celebrate the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the
temple.
For a long time, Mary’s parents, Sts. Joachim and Ann, were without children. God rewarded their
prayers and granted them a daughter late in life. They may have made a vow before her birth to
offer her up to God. When Mary was three years old, her parents took her to Jerusalem to present
her to God in his Temple.
This event in Mary’s childhood was recorded for the first time by St. Evodius, Bishop of Antioch;
perhaps one of the seventy disciples of our Lord. He preceded St. Ignatius, St. Jerome,
St. Gregory of Nissa, St. Gregory Nazianzen, and other Church authorities who lived when
traditions were still very recent. They related the same event and held it as true. This event was
already being commemorated in the East, in the 6th century. Pope Gregory XI introduced this feast
at Avignon and Sixtus V in Rome in 1585 on November 21st.
The Responsorial Psalm that is read on this day says: How sweet to my taste is your promise!
(Ps 119: 103a) making reference to our Lady’s faith and hope, that reveals a fundamental way in
which our Blessed Mother expressed her love for Jesus: that is by doing God’s will. Yes, your
decrees are my delight; they are my counselors, continues the Psalm, Your decrees are my
inheritance forever; the joy of my heart they are.
So very briefly, I wish to share with you an excerpt from Pope Francis’ preaching on our Lady’s
hope. He says: “Mary is the mother of hope, the icon that most fully expresses Christian hope. Her
whole life is a series of episodes of hope, beginning with her ‘yes’ at the moment of the
Annunciation. Mary did not know how she could become a mother, but she entrusted herself totally
to the mystery that was about to be fulfilled, and she became the woman of expectation and hope.
Then we see her in Bethlehem, where the One proclaimed to her as the Savior of Israel and as the
Messiah is born into poverty. Later, while she was in Jerusalem to present him in the Temple amid
the joy of the elderly Simeon and Anna, a prediction was made that a sword will pierce her heart
and a prophecy foretells that He will be a sign of contradiction. She realizes that the mission and
the very identity of this Son surpasses her own motherhood. We then come to the episode of Jesus
who is lost in Jerusalem and is then called back: Son, why have you treated us so? (Lk 2:48), and
to Jesus’ reply that takes away her motherly anxiety and turns to the things of the Heavenly Father.
Yet in the face of all these difficulties and surprises in God’s plan, the Virgin’s hope is never
shaken—The woman of hope. This tells us that hope is nourished by listening, contemplation and
patience until the time of the Lord is ripe. Again at the wedding in Cana, Mary is the mother of hope,
which makes her attentive and solicitous to human affairs. With the start of his public ministry,
Jesus becomes the Teacher and the Messiah: Our Lady looks upon the mission of the Son with
exultation but also with apprehension, because Jesus becomes ever more that sign of contradiction
foretold by the elderly Simeon. At the foot of the Cross, she is at once the woman of sorrow and, of
watchful expectation of a mystery far greater than sorrow which is about to be fulfilled. It seemed
that everything had come to an end; every hope could be said to have been extinguished. She too,
at that moment, remembering the promises of the Annunciation could have said: they did not come
true, I was deceived. But she did not say this. And so she who was blessed because she believed,
sees blossom from her faith a new future and awaits God’s tomorrow with
expectation.” (Celebration of Vespers, 2013)
We owe so much to our Blessed Mother! She is that mother “who inspires us not with the vain hope
of the miserable and transitory advantages of this life,” says St. Alphonsus, “but with the holy hope
of the immense and eternal good of the blessed life to come”. May the feast of the Presentation of
our Lady remind us that she, is the mother of hope, that she is always solicitous to sustain us in
times of darkness, difficulty, discouragement, of seeming defeat or true human defeat. May our
Blessed Mother help us to make of our lives a pleasing offering to our Lord, in an attitude that
always looks forward to tomorrow.
May God bless you!
