Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, November 16, 2014 SAINT LUKE CATHOLIC CHURCH SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Thirty-Third Sunday of the Year Jesus told this parable to his disciples: “A man was going on a journey. He called in his servants and handed his funds over to them according to each man’s abilities. To one he disbursed five thousand silver pieces, to a second two thousand, and to a third a thousand. After a long absence, the master of those servants came home and settled accounts with them. The man who had received the five thousand came forward bringing the additional five. ‘My lord,’ he said, ‘you let me have five thousand. See, I have made five thousand more.’” (Matthew 25: 14-15, 19-20). The Parable of the Buried Talent The talent was not a coin. It was a weight. The parable reminds us that God gives people different talents. It is not the talent that matters; what matters is how we use them. A Retrieved Reformation This short story was written by O. Henry in 1903. William Sidney Porter was the author’s birth name. He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on September 11, 1862. His mother died of tuberculosis when he was only three years old. In 1898, he was convicted of embezzlement and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary where he worked as a druggist in the prison hospital. Here he began to write his short stories and discovered his God-given talents as an author. Jimmy Valentine was the name of the safecracker in A Retrieved Reformation. He was paroled by the governor after serving only ten months of a four year sentence. As soon as he was released he retrieved his case of tools hidden behind the wall in his old apartment and went “back to work.” He could clean out tumblers and drill holes better than any safecracker around. One day, he got off the train in Elmore, Arkansas, carrying his suitcase. As he approached the bank of that small town his eyes fell upon the most beautiful woman he ever saw. Her name was Annabel Adams, and her father was the bank manager! Sitting in his room at the local hotel some months later he picked up a pen and began to write a letter to one of his old pals. “Say, Billy, I’ve quit the old business a year ago. I’ve got a nice store. I’m making an honest living, and I’m going to marry the finest girl on earth two weeks from now. It’s the only life Billy – the straight one. I wouldn’t touch a dollar of another man’s money now for a million … Your old friend, Jimmy” I won’t tell you the end of the story. You can look it up yourself on You Tube. It has a great ending. This man used his talents in a way that would have pleased God. We can too. Fr. Paul Gary S T E WA R D S H I P AT S T. L U K E PA R I S H . . . What will you do with the time, talent and treasure God has given you? Will you give it back with increase or bury it? With 9 months left in the Campaign which ends as of June 30, 2015, we are now able to reset the Total Goal at $985,000. What happens if St Luke reaches the Total Goal? When the Total Goal is reached, St Luke will payoff the mortgage, all interest and taxes. We will own the new property outright! What happens to any funds collected over the Total Goal? The Diocese has granted St Luke capital campaign status until July 1st, 2015. St Luke will apply excess funds over the Total Goal towards future construction ( see Building & Planning Concept Drawing). How can I assist to reach the Total Goal? Please continue to use your green Building Peace envelopes to place in the collection baskets. If you do not have a green envelope, put your name on an envelope and place in collection basket. Administration will provide an annual total contribution listing for qualified tax deduction. If you prefer, contribute cash/check in the 2nd Building Peace collection on the first of each month.
