CBCT Imaging Considerations in Dental Implant Treatment Planning
This course starts with the biological and biomechanical considerations for dental implant
placement and their imaging correlations, discusses patient selection and the considerations for
implant placement in different edentulous schemata. The imaging toolbox available for implant
analysis is then described, so that clinicians are aware of their options, the pros and cons of
each, and how to utilize these options for the evaluation of their planned implant site. A review
of normal anatomy relevant to implants and some of the more common pathology encountered
when evaluating radiographic data for implants with implant correlations is given. The imaging
evaluation of alveolar process augmentation follows, to show the participant the options available
once the radiographic imaging data has been determined to be within normal limits and the alveolar
processes are deemed atrophic, followed by radiographic criteria of the successful and failing graft.
Imaging protocols post-implant placement are discussed, as well as the radiographic appearance
of implant success, wrapping up with review on the radiographic appearance of complications
associated with dental implant treatment and some of the medicolegal considerations for these
clinical scenarios.
Educational Objectives:
1. To understand some of the clinical and radiographic concepts that affect the planning of
implants.
2. To learn how to manipulate CBCT data for implant analysis, and know the available imaging
tools and advanced modalities that help with implant treatment planning.
3. To identify relevant anatomy and pathology that may impact on implant treatment planning.
4. To understand the radiographic criteria for sufficient alveolar bone for implant placement,
the augmentation procedures that can be utilized and their radiographic evaluation.
5. To learn the post-implant placement imaging protocol, and the identification of
complications radiographically.

Implant Aesthetics: New Approaches, Limitations and Challenges
The demand for creating esthetic restorations has become a consistent theme in the dental
literature and in daily clinical practice. Surgical concepts that are emphasized as important to
the esthetic outcome include resective procedures to change bone volume and levels, as well
as additive procedures such as tissue grafting to alter the biotype and volume around teeth
and implants. Predominately with implant treatment, today’s surgical and restorative strategies
play an important role in post-extractive tissue guidance, mandating precise surgical techniques,
and emphasizing cooperation and coordination between the surgical and restorative team
members. This presentation will explore some of the complications of treatment, underscoring
the responsibility of the surgical and restorative team to critically assess emerging treatment
concepts, materials and techniques.
The following learning objectives will be explored in this presentation:
1. Recognize treatment planning and surgical problems and their impact on the restorative
outcome for both teeth and implants.
2. Review current procedures and materials used to alter bone levels and soft tissue quality and
volume around teeth and implants.
3. The role of immediate implant placement and restoration in guiding tissue form: Recognize
the risks, but understand the potential benefits.
4. Definitive restoration: Understand and anticipate the restoring colleague’s requirements.
