About the University
The University of Calcutta was founded on January 24, 1857 by the incorporation of an
act of the Legislative Council of the then British India.
The University was established to promote western knowledge and learning in colonial
interest. But ultimately, it emerged as the nucleus of a range of academic activities which
contributed to the development of Indian science and technology and our own
understanding of the country’s past and the nation’s perceptions for the future. Besides,
the University has always remained alive to emerging political, social and economic
challenges of the nation and world.
About the Department
The Department had its root in 1945, when a Diploma in Library Training Program
started in the month of January under the control of University Library. In 1959 the
training Department was separated from the Library, and a separate Department of
Library Science was placed under an independent Faculty for Post Graduate Studies in
Library Science. From 1969-70 session, the Diploma was replaced by Post Graduate
Degree of Bachelor of Library Science (B Lib. Sc.) the Masters of Library Science (M.
Lib. Sc.) started in 1973. Till date it has been a 2 years course at par with other Masters
degree of the University. In 1998, the Department was renamed as the Department of
Library and Information Science and both the Bachelor and Masters degrees were
renamed as Bachelor of Library & Information Science (BLIS) and Masters of Library &
Information Science (MLIS) respectively. The Department is offering Ph. D programme
since 1982, and M. Phil programme since 2003. The Department, very recently, has
introduced a 5-years Integrated MLIS course of 10 semesters in 2010. The ex-students of
this Department have served and / are serving in various responsible professional,
academic and other positions in various prestigious institutions and organizations spread
all over the country.
