A friend of mine shared this experience from World War II. He was drafted, went through basic training and sent to New Zealand awaiting deployment in the war in the Pacific. On his first Sunday in New Zealand, the pastor said to the troops, “I want to give you a poem to memorize. This poem will see you through the war.” “Keep praying, the Lord is nigh. Keep praying, He'll hear your cry. The Lord has promised and He is true. Keep praying, He'll answer you.” After all these years, my friend still has this poem memorized. It carried him through the war and through the rest of his life. I have memorized this poem as well. For me, it is a simple but powerful reminder that God is always with us. God is always nigh or near and ready to hear our cries. God is always at work for good in our lives and the lives of those we are praying for. I found a tune for this poem that we will sing this month as our prayer chorus. Donna and I want to thank the congregation for the wonderful Pastor Appreciation Sunday! We loved the serenade of “Jesus Loves Me,” the youth song about diet orange soda and the all the gifts and cards. We were humbled and overwhelmed by this public expression of support. We continue to be deeply touched by the love of our church! Thank you again for being you. The Messenger A Note from the Pastor By Rev. The Messenger Mission Committee News In December, you will have three mission options from which to choose: our Conference Apportionments, Red Bird School, and Local Mission Emergency Fund. A. Our Conference Apportionments provides: one third of financial support for every UM missionary serving around the world, the initial financial support for our emergency relief through UMCOR, and locally, our church camping ministries. We are currently one month behind in our apportionments. B. Red Bird Christian School serves students in grades K-12 and centers on developing the full potential of its students in a Christian atmosphere. This year, our school graduated 16 seniors. C. Local Mission Emergency Fund is a new idea. This fund will be in one of two ways. It will be back suupport for when the pastor’s emergency fund or the Ministerial Alliance fund or the Food Pantry funds are running low. Second, it will provide emergency assistance to those who are special need and do not fit the criteria of other ministries. We see this fund being used to assist victims of domestic violence, for instance. Re-gifting to fight Ebola. The Missions Committee is setting a table in the Bridgeway for donated items. If you have an item in good condition, bring it to church and place it on the table. If you see an item you would like, pick up a donation envelop and place your donation in Sunday’s offering plate. All funds received will be sent through the United Methodist Church to fight Ebola in Liberia. Our first Mission Sunday in 2015 will be January 11. Pat Wright, Director of our Midwest Distribution Center (MWDC) in Chatham, will be here and share during worship. The Missions Committee is hosting a potluck and Pat will offer a presentation on MWDC during the meal. Our next Friendship Meal will January 31, 2015. Due to the holidays, there will not be a Friendship meal in November or December. We are collecting items for the Back Pack ministry and personal care items for Midwest Distribution Center in tubs on the Bridgeway.
