TOORA TIMES
A publication of the Toora & District Progress Association Inc. A 0014061P
What can we say?
Not only have we lost one, but two of
the most respected gentlemen in Toora
all in the same week. Toora is stunned.
First we get the news of the passing
of Stan Hopkins. Stan spent virtually
all his life in Toora. His father, Harold
was a policeman who was relocated to
Toora from Melbourne.
When he retired from the police force,
he ventured into farming with the help
of his boys. Stan married a local girl,
Dawn, and together raised their family
on a farm just outside Toora. Some of
the family members still reside in Toora.
Sympathy is extended to Dawn and
family.
Then we hear the news of the passing
of George Light. George and Betty
came to Toora and purchased a small
clothing shop on the corner before they
moved into the more impressive shop in
the centre of town. Together they ran
one of the most popular clothing shops
in South Gippsland. Long hours and
hard work began affecting George's
health, so they closed the doors to
enjoyretirement in Toora.
Sincere sympathy is extended to
Betty and family.
Did you get the chance to visit the
ice-cream shop in Toora. Located next
to the laundry, the ice-cream shop is
opening on Saturday afternoons giving
you the
opportunity to purchase some of their
home-made ice-creams or gelatti.
Demand was so big last Saturday that
they sold out. If you can't make it in
to Toora on Saturday afternoon,
these ice-creams and gelatti are
available from Toora Foodworks.
Friday October 31st starting at 1:30
and Saturday November 1st from
10am until 4:30 is the very popular
Welshpool Flower Show.
Always a panorama of colour and
flowers, and the best afternoon teas.
Don't miss it!
Also on Saturday November 1st, Port
Welshpool is holding the “Rock the
Boat” festival. A great mix of music,
food and good fun. A fund raiser for
the Port Welshpool Coast Guard, it
runs from 9:30 until 4:30pm in the
ferry terminal. Bring a chair and join
the fun. November is proving to be a
busy month;

Toora Family History had a very interesting guest speaker on
Monday. Jill Plowright spoke about the Toora Ramsar wetlands Corner
Inlet. Everyone (12) including to new residents to Toora enjoyed the
information Jill gave to us Re the different migratory birds, their habits &
nesting places. The Wader birds that frequent the shallows & mud flats
can be viewed from the BIRDHIDE. It was interesting to see the birds
on the screen & see there plumage, bills of different sizes, long & short
legs. All for the purpose of finding food.. Next month Tom Martin will
be our guest speaker talking about his family time spent in Toora as 1
of the 3 butcher shops. Nov 10. 2pm.

Searching for WW 1 photos and stories
The Toora & District Family History Group is one of a number of organisations
and individuals within the “old Shire of South Gippsland that is searching for
records of those who gave the Supreme Sacrifice during the First World War,
as well as those that enlisted, served and returned. If you have a family member
that served during WW 1 and is recognised on either the local Toora cenotaph
or on an Honour Roll in one of our district halls and you can contribute some
photos, letters, or maybe a diary to help us construct a better picture of their life
before the war and their service to the Nation, it would be most welcome. The
end result will be a pictorial and documented display to become part of the Foster
Museum’s tribute to those who fought in WW 1. This project is being
coordinated by Mike Heal of Yanakie through the Foster Museum, however if
you can contribute information of those who enlisted from the districts of Toora,
Mount Best, Gunyah, and Port Franklin, then please contact Dave Berry on 0418
