President’s Report
Hello everyone,
Last month I said that we had a few surprises in store for you next year—the biggest one is about the Big
Paintout. Through Annette, our Secretary, we have been approached by a community development and
promotions consultancy - Building Better Communities (www.buildingbettercommunities.com.au), who would like
to promote our Big Paintout as a result of seeing the quality and diversity of our paintings at our exhibitions.
Annette and I have had several meetings with BBC followed by a meeting with the committee two weeks ago and
we are really excited to tell you that the Big Paintout 2015 will be held at the Silver Jubilee Pavilion at Claremont
over the weekend of Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May 2015.
The aim of this BPO is to promote watercolour painting, the Watercolour Society of WA and its members and to
give the people of Western Australia a watercolour experience to remember! To attract the general public along
we will hold Master Classes and demonstrations by some of the top watercolourists in Australia on the Saturday—
so far Tony Smibert, Joseph Zbukvic, Julie Goldspink and Ian de Souza have agreed to come here. Funding for
the event will be handled by BBC—this is what their business is all about and they contact the relevant
Government departments and sponsors for the necessary funding.
It will then be our turn on the Sunday—our members will hold their demonstrations and workshops in a similar
way that we have done before, with smaller demonstrations popping up all over to give the public plenty of things
to do! We will aim to invite and include local schools with the idea being that we need to involve the younger
generations and their teachers to introduce them to the very reasons that we all love the watercolour medium.
At the same time, we will hold an exhibition over the whole weekend for our members which will have a major
launch on the Saturday evening. There will also be an up-market craft fair held in another part of the pavilion and
places for people to have coffee, lunch etc.
Obviously this is only an overview of what is happening—we will be able to give you more details at the next
general meeting on Tuesday 18th November and in future Newsletters. There is a huge amount of planning and
organising to put into place, much of which will be handled by BBC. However, when it comes to “our bit” on the
Sunday, we will be looking for as many of you as possible to be a part of this and to help the BPO to become the
huge success that we know it will be. I believe this is the perfect opportunity for us to let the public see that our
own members are as talented as many of those in the Eastern States and its about time they got the recognition
they deserve!!
Coming back down to earth—last week 17 of us thoroughly enjoyed a week at the Lions Myalup Pines Cottages
near Harvey on our annual camp. We also welcomed 3 non-members (Marie Turner, Marion Power and Wendy
Giraudo) - we were very grateful to them for coming along because they helped to cover our costs for hiring all 7
cottages! We held a very enjoyable Melbourne Cup lunch in the hall that is part of the “village” and many happy
hours were spent painting on location at various places around Harvey. Because there is so much more to see
and do in and around Harvey, we have booked the Myalup Pines again for next year—but this time for the last
week in October so that we can make the most of each day we are down there! You can see a full report and
photos on page.....
Please don’t forget to let Annette know if you are coming to the Christmas Lunch on Tuesday, 9th December at
the Secret Garden in South Perth—we need to let them know our numbers.
Finally, as this is the last Newsletter for 2014, on behalf of the committee, I would like to wish all our members,
friends and families a very happy Christmas and a safe, exciting and prosperous New Year!

This years camp was held from Sunday
2nd until Saturday 8th November at the
Lions Myalup Pines Cottages—a group
of 7 forestry workers cottages set in a
wooded area with a hall and plenty of local
wildlife. 17 of our members enjoyed this
lovely area - and our thanks go to Marion
Power, Marie Turner and Wendy Giraudo
for joining us to fill up the rooms!!
The friendly town of Harvey was only 8
minutes drive away and we were made to
feel especially welcome at the
Lemongrass Cafe, owned by artist Kevin
Francis, where we met several local artists
from the Harvey Art Society.
On Tuesday 4th November we had a
special Melbourne Cup lunch in the hall
where we watched the race and enjoyed a
wonderful lunch—smoked salmon,
chicken, caviar—a fitting feast for the
occasion and a great time was had by all.
Wendy Giraudo won the hat competition
with Annette Wallman 2nd and Paula
Quinn in 3rd place.
The cottages are booked again for next
year from Sunday 26th October to
Saturday 31st October—we visited quite a
few places but there is so much more to
see and do in the area.......

Christmas Lunch 2014
This year’s Christmas Lunch will be held at :
The Secret Garden, 64 Angelo Street,
South Perth
on Tuesday, 9th December at 12 o’clock.
Every year at the Christmas Lunch, each member brings along a hand-painted Christmas card and
envelope—they are all displayed and those present (or an unsuspecting passer-by!) vote on whichever
card they like best. This card is then sent to our Patron, Dr. Ken Michael and the winner receives a
small gift. The remaining cards are placed in a box and each member who brought a card, picks
another out of the box to keep.
Its another good way to wind down at the end of the
year—and to get to know your fellow members.
