Approximately 40 members were in attendance. The major item of business was for the membership to approve the operating budget put forth by the board, which it did with one minor change requested by Barbara Cook, our Scrapbook chair. The MTAC State Board has enacted the policy that branch treasurers must have an active email account. Since Patrice Babienko has elected not to open one, she will not be able to continue as our treasurer. The branch board and membership would like to thank her for 30 years of continuous service to this branch in the position of Treasurer. Lin Pan, at the request of our board, has agreed to serve as treasurer for the remainder of this fiscal year. Vice President Chrissy Huang announced that pianist and pedagogue Ann Schein will be in Los Altos next week and has agreed to give a special talk about her experiences as a student of Rubenstein. Chrissy will send an email to the membership with instructions for RSVP, as space is limited to 30 people. November’s program will feature Dr. John Perry, who will teach 3 students in a master class. Teachers may go online to apply for their students, and Dr. Perry will decide, based on repertoire. Chrissy will send out an email as soon as the date and place have been finalized. Chrissy, Michael, and Jennifer Hung fielded questions about choosing student repertoire for CM and about Panel, the focus being on piano. Following is a summary of points made and audience questions answered. · Know and follow the latest (2012 Piano) Syllabus, and consider the evaluator’s point of view when entering a student for Convention. It is best not to program “borderline” pieces, if the level might be too low, or if the piece is not listed in the Syllabus. Plan early in the school year, in case changes must be made. · When determining the level of a piece, first check the Single Composer Index or the Anthologies Index. However, then check the Level Repertoire List to ensure that the piece in question is not flagged as “not” allowed. The specific example given concerned Beethoven Sonata Op. 49 #2, which is contained in Frederick Harris level 8, but is specifically excluded in the level 8 Repertoire List. Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” is acceptable at level 10, because it is present and not specifically excluded in Snell’s level 10 anthology, even though the Single Composer Index lists Suite Bergamasque at level 8-9. · See page 10 of the Piano Syllabus for acceptable Bach concertos. Note that Busoni’s transcriptions of Bach are classified as Romantic era and not Baroque. · Consult the Composer Categories beginning on page 161, and just “set aside your own ideas” about certain composers and their eras. Go by the Syllabus and note that some composers are listed in two categories. If that is your case, choose which era to assign the composer in question, and then be sure the other pieces come from different eras. · For Advanced level, a Chopin Etude plus a different Chopin piece for Romantic era are allowed. · Students may repeat a level, move to a lower level, or skip a level, from one year to the next. A student may also do Level 10 following Panel the previous year. The only exception is if they received a Remain At Level, in which case they may not advance until the same level is passed. It is common for high school students to repeat level 10, even for several years. The same repertoire may be used again at the same level, including Panel. Please see page 3 for continuation of minutes. www.mtacsantaclara.org Volume XXXXV, Number 5 MTAC Newsletter November 2014 Page 3 Minutes – Monthly Business Meeting and Program Wednesday, October 8, 2014 (Continued from page 2) · To find answers to practically any question, log onto the state website, mtac.org, click on “CM Resources” and then on “Documents.” A search here will provide the answers to most questions teachers might have. Please make use of this, rather than emailing your section chair, as they are all very busy. · Adults may participate in CM. · Students chosen to play in honors recitals may not transfer from one recital to another because of schedule conflicts (or for any other reason). The logistics and arrangements are just too complicated. Our guest presenter, Gail Lew, then introduced many newly composed pieces and collections suitable for lower- to mid-level students. She emphasized that New Materials (copyrighted since 2005) is the only Convention recital open to levels 1 & 2. Some of the pieces she played for us qualify for this year’s Spanish Theme recitals, which begin at level 3. Her carefully annotated handout, detailed descriptions, and playing of many examples were most helpful and enjoyable. Respectfully submitted, Glenda Riddle Recording Secretary Scholarship foundation will add new awards to the following students meeting the requirements. You may add those into the newsletter. The persons who are the finalists perform on the state convention in VOCE, YAG, YCG, SOLO, CONCERTO are going to receive $100 each. If it is an ensemble, $50 will be issued for each performer in the ensemble. The finalists should also study with the teacher of MTAC Santa Clara Branch for at least 2-3 years to be eligible to the awards.
