In this passage full of expectation for the second coming, it is noteworthy that Paul envisions two options. Either one is a person of the day, which requires vigilance and preparation, or one belongs to the night and is oblivious. In a world characterized by growing conflict and harsh economic inequalities, the temptation to be lulled to sleep is great. Whether the second coming is imminent or not, vigilance is required in order to live faithfully in the world. Help us to help each other, Lord, Each other’s cross to bear, Let each his friendly aid afford And feel his brother's care. Up into thee, our living Head, Let us in all things grow, And by thy sacrifice be led The fruits of love to show. This is the bond of perfectness, Thy spotless charity; O let us, still we pray, possess The mind that was in thee. Charles Wesley (1707-1788) AHB 365 TUNE: Church Triumphant . St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 16th November 2014 Offertory Hymn All my hope on God is founded He doth still my trust renew. Me through change and chance he guideth, Only good and only true. God unknown, He alone Calls my heart to be his own. Pride of man and earthly glory, Sword and crown betray his trust; What with care and toil he buildeth, Tower and temple, fall to dust. But God’s power, Hour by hour, Is my temple and my tower. God’s great goodness ay endureth, Deep his wisdom passing thought: Splendour, light and life attend him, Beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore From his store Newborn worlds rise and adore. Daily doth the Almighty giver Bounteous gifts on us bestow; His desire our soul delighteth, Pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand At his hand; Joy doth wait on his command. Still from man to God eternal Sacrifice of praise be done, High above all praises praising For the gift of Christ his Son. Christ doth call One and all: Ye who follow shall not fall. Joachim Neander (1650-1680) tr. How can we love those who commit atrocities? The starting point is to pray for them; to pray that they may discover the love of Jesus and turn from harming others to loving those whom they regard as enemies. We, too, can pray that God may help us to be more like Jesus by growing in our love for those whom we find difficult to love. 4 St Saviour’s Cathedral MINISTRY OF HOSPITALITY Visitors to the Cathedral are often interested in the Soldiers’ Chapel.
