October’s Speaker – Dr. Larry Black on Ukraine and Russia Dr. Larry Black shared his extensive background on the history of this region and how it has influenced the recent events we have watched in the news. His knowledge and personal reflections gave all of us things to think about how we react to events in this part of the world. Thanks for sharing your experience and personal knowledge with our club!!! 2015 We are working on several exciting speakers for next year. Words from the Membership Chair … The sign-up sheets for Special Interest Groups (SIGs) will be again available at the coffee break of the November meeting. A SIG is a group ofspeople who get together outside of the monthly meeting to pursue a shared interest such as card playing, going out for lunch or dinner or whatever. Each group manages its own affairs; the Club only facilitates the formation of the SIGs and will, on request, publish SIG items in the newsletter. It is expected that SIGs will increase socializing between club members and develop new friendships. Please see me if you have any questions or comments. Spiced Pumpkin Butter Made with pumpkin puree, warm spices, and a handful of other ingredients, this creamy all-purpose spread is delicious on pancakes, muffins, and toasted bread. Ingredients: 4 cups Pumpkin Puree or two 15-oz. cans pumpkin 1 1/4 cups pure maple syrup 1/2 cup apple juice 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt Chopped hazelnuts (optional) Pumpkin Puree 2 1/2 pounds pie pumpkins Directions: 1. In 5-quart Dutch oven combine all ingredients except nuts. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cook, uncovered, over medium heat, stirring frequently, 25 minutes or until thick. (If mixture spatters, reduce heat to medium-low). Remove from heat; cool. 2. Ladle into jars or freezer containers, leaving 1/2-inch headspace.
